    Abstract: The scapholunate interosseous ligament (SLIL) plays a fundamental role in stabilizing the wrist bones, and its disruption is a frequent cause of wrist arthrosis and disfunction. Traditionally, this structure is considered to be a variety of fibrocartilaginous tissue and consists of three regions: dorsal, membranous and palmar. Despite its functional relevance, the exact composition of the human SLIL is not well understood. In the present work, we have analyzed the human SLIL and control tissues from the human hand using an array of histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical methods to characterize each region of this structure. Results reveal that the SLIL is heterogeneous, and each region can be subdivided in two zones that are histologically different to the other zones. Analysis of collagen and elastic fibers, and several proteoglycans, glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycans confirmed that the different regions can be subdivided in two zones that have their own structure and composition. In general, all parts of the SLIL resemble the histological structure of the control articular cartilage, especially the first part of the membranous region (zone M1). Cells showing a chondrocyte‐like phenotype as determined by S100 were more abundant in M1, whereas the zone containing more CD73‐positive stem cells was D2. These results confirm the heterogeneity of the human SLIL and could contribute to explain why certain zones of this structure are more prone to structural damage and why other zones have specific regeneration potential. Research Highlights Application of an array of histological analysis methods allowed us to demonstrate that the human scapholunate ligament is heterogeneous and consists of at least six different regions sharing similarities with the human cartilage, ligament and other anatomical structures.

    Abstract: Menopause is one of the stages in a woman’s life that affects her psychological health, the most frequent being anxiety and depression. In addition, another problem related to this stage is the lack of sleep that causes a decrease in the quality of sleep. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to analyze the effectiveness of a Qigong exercise program on sleep quality, anxiety, and depression in Spanish postmenopausal women. Methods: A total of 125 women were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG) (n = 63) that carried out a Qigong exercise program for 12 weeks, or a control group (CG) (n = 62), which did not perform any type of intervention. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: Women who underwent an intervention program experienced significant improvements for all measured variables, except for the use of sleeping medication and daytime dysfunctions that did not show any significant effect with respect to the group and group × time interaction. Conclusions: After an intervention based on a BaDuanJin Qigong exercise program for 12 weeks, improvements were observed in sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances, the total score of the PSQI, anxiety and depression in postmenopausal Spanish women.

    Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a Pilates exercises program on the cognitive and physical functioning of older Spanish women. This study is a randomized clinical trial; a total of 110 women aged ≥60 years were initially allocated to either a Pilates group (PG, n = 55), who underwent a 12-week Pilates exercise program, or to a control group (CG, n = 55), who did not receive any intervention. Global cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination), verbal fluency (Isaacs test), executive function (Trail Making Test), functional flexibility (Back Scratch Test and Chair Sit-and-Reach Test), and lower-body strength (30 s Chair-Stand Test) were assessed before and immediately after the intervention period. The main findings of this study suggest that women in the PG (within-group differences) experienced improvements across all the variables examined except for global cognitive function. When compared with the CG (between-group differences), our analysis revealed significant benefits in the PG for all measures except for global cognitive function and functional flexibility (Back Scratch Test). In conclusion, our results suggest that Pilates has the potential to improve both cognitive and functional abilities among Spanish women aged 60 years and over.

    Abstract: Gait, dynamic balance, and functional mobility problems are well-known fall risk factors. Furthermore, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and depression are prevalent among older women. This study aimed to analyze the associations of sleep quality, anxiety, and depression with functional mobility, gait speed, and dynamic balance in community-dwelling postmenopausal women aged ≥ 60 years. A total of 271 women (69.18 ± 5.69 years) participated in this study. Functional mobility (Timed Up-and-Go Test), dynamic balance (3-meter tandem walk test), gait speed (OptoGait® optical detection system), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) were assessed. Our results showed that poor sleep efficiency and the use of sleeping medication were related to decreased gait speed (R2 = 0.072). Poor functional mobility was linked to depression and the use of sleeping medication (R2 = 0.159). Additionally, increased symptoms of anxiety and depression were associated with worsened dynamic balance (R2 = 0.127). In conclusion, poorer sleep quality is associated with slower gait speed and reduced functional mobility, which is also related, along with impaired dynamic balance, to higher levels of anxiety and depression.

    Abstract: Poor sleep quality lessens general health quality and is related to physical and mental problems. Moreover, fatigue is one of the foremost common complaints in medical care and plays a role in the decreasing quality of life of the older population. For these reasons, the objective of this study was to examine the effect of high- and moderate-intensity interval training programs (HIIT vs. MIIT)—both consisting of twelve weeks of TRX training—on the sleep quality and fatigue levels of the elderly. A randomized controlled clinical trial (NCT03404830) was conducted. A total of 82 subjects were randomized to either a HIIT group (n = 28) that performed a main squat activity with a suspension system, comprising four four-minute intervals between 90–95% of the maximum heart rate (HR), an MIIT group (n = 27) with an intensity of 70% of the maximum HR, and a control group (CG) (n = 27) that continued their daily lifestyle. The two exercise groups trained twice a week for 12 weeks, with each session lasting 45 min. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and fatigue was assessed using the fatigue severity scale (FSS). Outcomes were measured before the intervention and after the intervention period. Post-intervention sleep quality measurements revealed a statistically significant interaction regarding group × time (p 〈 0.005) and fatigue (p = 0.002). Specifically, fatigue decreased in the HIIT group between both measurement moments (p = 0.003). In addition, differences were obtained in the post-intervention measure between the HIIT and MIIT groups (p = 0.013) and HIIT and control (p = 0.029). Our analysis indicates that a population of the elderly showed improvements in sleep quality and fatigue after performing a high-intensity intervention using suspension training (TRX), with markedly better results in the HIIT group.

    Abstract: (1) Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the associations between severity of sarcopenia and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 304 older-adult participants was used to assess the severity of sarcopenia by measuring muscle strength (handgrip dynamometer), muscle mass (bioelectrical impedance analysis), and physical performance (Timed Up-and-Go test). The generic 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used to evaluate HRQoL. Anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) as well as age were considered as possible confounders. Probable sarcopenia was determined by low muscle strength; confirmed sarcopenia was defined by the presence of both low muscle strength and muscle mass; and severe sarcopenia was defined by low muscle strength and mass along with poor physical performance. (3) Results: The linear regression analysis showed that the presence of probable sarcopenia was associated with the SF-36 domains physical role (adjusted R2 = 0.183), general health (adjusted R2 = 0.290), and social functioning (adjusted R2 = 0.299). As for the SF-36 mental (MCS) and physical (PCS) component summary scores, probable sarcopenia, as well as depression and anxiety, remained associated with MCS (adjusted R2 = 0.518), and these three variables, together with age, were linked to PCS (adjusted R2 = 0.340). (4) Conclusions: Probable sarcopenia, but not confirmed or severe sarcopenia, was independently associated with poor HRQoL. More precisely, it was related to PCS and MCS, as well as to the physical role, general health, and social functioning of SF-36 domains.

    Abstract: The aim of this systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was to investigate the effects of multifactorial programs on the rate of falls and physical performance in ≥60 years old adults. A systematic literature search was conducted in four databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library). A total of 518 articles were identified in the initial search, and six RCTs were finally included. Articles written in English, Portuguese and Spanish and published from January 2009 to May 2020 were included in this study. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated by the PEDro scale. A total of 518 studies were identified in the initial search, six RCTs were finally included, and three reached a level 1 of evidence. The findings of this systematic review of RCTs suggest that a physical exercise program, especially exercise group activities, combined with health education or with fall risk home assessment, were the most effective multifactorial program in reducing the rate of falls, although the results were not conclusive in all the studies included. Significant beneficial effects were observed in physical performance, particularly when assessed as gait, mobility and balance, regardless of the components of multifactorial program or exercise. This inconsistency in the results, particularly regarding the rate of falls, together with the variability among the multifactorial programs, suggest that any conclusion must be drawn with caution.

    Abstract: To analyze the association of sleep quality with postural balance, as measured with objective stabilometric parameters, and fear of falling (FoF), among Spanish postmenopausal women. Methods: In all, 250 women (60 ± 8 years) took part in this cross-sectional study. Sociodemographic and anthropometric data were collected, as well as information concerning history of falls and FoF. Anxiety and depression were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to analyze sleep quality. Measurements of sway area ( S ), velocity ( V ), and mediolateral (RMSX) and anteroposterior (RMSY) displacements of the center of pressure were obtained with a resistive multisensor platform under both eyes-open (EO) and eyes-closed (EC) conditions to assess postural control. The independent associations of sleep quality with FoF and postural control were evaluated by multivariate linear and logistic regressions, respectively, adjusting for potential confounding variables. Results: SEO was independently associated (adjusted R 2  = 0.073) with sleep duration ( P   〈  0.001) and subjective sleep quality ( P  = 0.001), VEO (adjusted R 2  = 0.156) with daytime dysfunction ( P  = 0.006) and sleep duration ( P  = 0.013), RMSXEO (adjusted R 2  = 0.118) with subjective sleep quality ( P  = 0.005), and RMSYEO (adjusted R 2  = 0.166) with sleep duration ( P  = 0.001) and daytime dysfunction ( P  = 0.046). Under EC condition, SEC (adjusted R 2  = 0.014) was independently related with anxiety ( P  = 0.034), VEC (adjusted R 2  = 0.148) with daytime dysfunction ( P  = 0.002) and sleep duration ( P  = 0.024), RMSXEC (adjusted R 2  = 0.134) with subjective sleep quality ( P   〈  0.001), and RMSYEC (adjusted R 2  = 0.128) with sleep duration ( P  = 0.013) and daytime dysfunction ( P  = 0.033). Logistic regression showed that time since menopause ( P  = 0.003), body mass index ( P  = 0.001), and anxiety ( P   〈  0.001), unlike sleep quality, were independently associated with FoF. The effect size of the model was medium (adjusted R 2 = 0.162). Conclusions: In Spanish postmenopausal women, sleep duration, subjective sleep quality, and daytime dysfunction were independent risk factors for worsened postural stability. FoF, anxiety, time since menopause onset, and body mass index, unlike sleep quality, were independently associated with poor postural stability.

    Abstract: To analyze the association between the severity of menopausal symptoms and two important fall risk factors, namely balance confidence and fear of falling, among Portuguese and Spanish postmenopausal women 65 years or older. Methods A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted on 363 women (66.21 ± 9.00 y) from several Portuguese and Spanish locations. The Menopause Rating Scale was used to evaluate the severity of menopausal symptoms, while the Falls Efficacy Scale-International and Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale-16 items were used to assess balance confidence and fear of falling, respectively. Anxiety and depression (evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), age, time since the onset of menopause, body mass index, history of falls, osteoporosis, smoking habit, physical activity level, and nocturia were considered as potential confounders. Independent associations were analyzed after adjusting for potential confounding variables. Student's t test, bivariate correlations, and multivariate linear regression analysis were performed. Results A total of 363 women (66.21 ± 9.00 y) participated in the study, 192 from Portugal and 171 from Spain. Linear regression analysis indicates that more severe menopausal symptoms at a somatovegetative level (beta coefficient [β] = −0.25; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] , −2.09 to −0.81; P = 〈 0.001), a higher body mass index (β = −0.16; 95% CI, −1.22 to −0.22; P = 0.005), and osteoporosis (β = 0.14; 95% CI, 1.36 to 10.08; P = 0.010) were associated with lower balance confidence values. On the other hand, a higher score in the Menopause Rating Scale somatovegetative domain (β = 0.22; 95% CI, 0.27–0.79; P = 〈 0.001), depression (β = 0.36; 95% CI, 0.59-1.08; P = 〈 0.001), and years after the menopause onset (β = 0.15; 95% CI, 0.04-0.22; P = 0.006) were linked to increased fear of falling. Conclusions The findings of our study show that, after taking into account possible confounders, increased severity of menopausal symptoms at a somatic level was associated with heightened fear of falling and diminished balance confidence.
