Abstract:
El Papel del Tiempo y la Identidad de las Especies en los Patrones Espaciales de Riqueza de Especies y la Conservación Resumen Muchas acciones de conservación están justificadas con base en el manejo de la biodiversidad. La biodiversidad, en términos de la riqueza de especies, generalmente es producto de especies raras. Esto es problemático porque la intensidad del muestreo necesitado para caracterizar a las comunidades y los patrones de rareza o para justificar el uso de sustitutos tiene un muestreo sesgado a favor del espacio sobre el tiempo. Sin embargo, las fluctuaciones ambientales que interactúan con las dinámicas de las comunidades llevan a variaciones temporales en dónde y cuándo ocurren las especies, lo que afecta potencialmente a la planeación de la conservación al generar incertidumbre sobre los resultados del modelado de distribución de especies (incluyendo las determinaciones de extensión), selección de sustitutos para la biodiversidad y la proporción de biodiversidad compuesta por especies raras. Para tener confianza en la base de evidencias para las acciones de conservación, uno debe considerar si la replicación temporal es necesaria para producir inferencias generalizadas. Utilizamos aproximadamente 20 años de datos de macrofauna de los llanos de marea de dos puertos para explorar la variación en la identidad de especies raras, comunes, de extensión restringida y dispersadas a lo largo del tiempo y el espacio. A lo largo del tiempo, los taxones raros tuvieron mayor probabilidad de incrementar en abundancia u ocurrencia que de permanecer como raros o desaparecer y una mayor probabilidad de exhibir patrones temporales en su ocurrencia. Se observó congruencia espacio‐tiempo en las extensiones (es decir, los taxones dispersados espacialmente también estuvieron dispersados temporalmente) sólo cuando las muestras fueron colectadas a lo largo de un gradiente ambiental. El 15 % de los taxones en ambos puertos cambió con el tiempo de tener extensiones restringidas espacialmente a tener extensiones dispersadas. Nuestros hallazgos sugieren que las especies raras pueden proporcionar estabilidad frente al cambio ambiental, ya que la mayoría de las especies no fueron errantes al azar, pero que la selección de sustitutos para la biodiversidad requiere validación temporal. La rareza necesita ser considerada tanto espacial como temporalmente, ya que las especies que ocurren con el tiempo tienen probabilidad de tener un papel diferente en la función del ecosistema que aquellos que exhiben una estructura temporal (por ejemplo, estacionalidad). Además, la estructura temporal ofrece la oportunidad de colocar a las actividades de manejo y de conservación dentro de las ventanas de máxima oportunidad.
