Abstract:
A Green's function formulation is developed to compute the phonon resonances of an F − interstitial perturbed by the presence of a trivalent cation which occupies one of the second neighbour sites of the interstitial in BaF 2 , the interstitial site symmetry being thereby reduced from O h to C 4v . Expressions for the absorption coefficient are obtained for the case of an isolated interstitial and for that of the interstitial with an adjacent trivalent cation. These expressions are evaluated for both the isolated interstitial and for F i − associated with Y 3+ , Gd 3+ , or La 3+ . There is reasonable agreement between theory and the experimentally observed infrared absorption spectra measured by Morlot, Hadni, Villermain-Lecollier, and Strimer.
