Abstract:
Roots of some plant species elongate unexpectedly in nutrient solutions with high pH, apparently in contrast to the ‘acid‐growth theory’. Root elongation of intact barley plants was not inhibited by high pH, whereas the excised root segments elongated in external solutions with low pH. In addition, the ability of intact barley roots to acidify external solution was comparable with that of other species. Cell proliferation and differentiation in the root apex of barley may accelerate under high‐pH conditions.
