    Abstract: Background: High plasma levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) and its precursor choline have been linked to stroke; however, their association with cerebral small vessel disease remains unclear. Here we evaluated the association of plasma levels of TMAO and choline with imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease, including white matter hyperintensities, lacunes, and cerebral microbleeds. Methods: We performed a baseline cross-sectional analysis of a multicenter hospital-based cohort study from 2015 to 2018. The data were collected from 30 hospitals in China and included 1,098 patients with ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack aged ≥18 years. White matter hyperintensities, lacunes, and cerebral microbleeds were evaluated with the patients' demographic, clinical, and laboratory information removed. White matter hyperintensities were rated using the Fazekas visual grading scale, while the degree of severity of the lacunes and cerebral microbleeds was defined by the number of lesions. Results: Increased TMAO levels were associated with severe white matter hyperintensities [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) for the highest vs. lowest quartile, 1.5; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.0–2.1, p = 0.04]. High TMAO levels were more strongly associated with severe periventricular white matter hyperintensities (aOR for the highest vs. lowest quartile, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.1–2.3, p = 0.009) than deep white matter hyperintensities (aOR for the highest vs. lowest quartile, 1.3; 95% CI, 0.9–1.9, p = 0.16). No significant association was observed between TMAO and lacunes or cerebral microbleeds. Choline showed trends similar to that of TMAO in the association with cerebral small vessel disease. Conclusions: In patients with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack, TMAO and choline appear to be associated with white matter hyperintensities, but not with lacunes or cerebral microbleeds; TMAO and choline were associated with increased risk of a greater periventricular, rather than deep, white matter hyperintensities burden.

    Abstract: Rising obesity rates may lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, undermining carbon neutrality goals. However, evidence of the determinants of obesity from the perspective of energy economics is relatively limited. We contribute to the literature on the determinants of obesity by empirically studying the relationship between the school energy consumption and children’s BMI. Based on a combined dataset of Chinese children’s physical health data, kindergarten energy consumption data, and kindergarten geographic information data, we find that school energy consumption is negatively correlated with obesity, and there is considerable heterogeneity in the relationship of school energy consumption between kindergartens in cold areas and severe cold areas and between young girls and young boys. Our results are robust to alternative modeling techniques, the inclusion of additional control variables, and unobservable potential effects. We also find that children’s exercise ability is an important transmission channel between school heating and the probability of obesity.

    Abstract: Deep learning is currently being used to automate surface defect detection in aluminum. The common target detection models based on neural networks often have a large number of parameters and a slow detection speed, which is not conducive to real-time detection. Therefore, this paper proposes a lightweight aluminum surface defect detection model, M2-BL-YOLOv4, based on the YOLOv4 algorithm. First, in the YOLOv4 model, the complex CSPDarkNet53 backbone network was modified into an inverted residual structure, which greatly reduced the number of parameters in the model and increased the detection speed. Second, a new feature fusion network, BiFPN-Lite, is designed to improve the fusion ability of the network and further improve its detection accuracy. The final results show that the mean average precision of the improved lightweight YOLOv4 algorithm in the aluminum surface defect test set reaches 93.5%, the number of model parameters is reduced to 60% of the original, and the number of frames per second (FPS) detected is 52.99, which increases the detection speed by 30%. The efficient detection of aluminum surface defects is realized.

    Abstract: To report the prevalence and distribution of lacunar stroke in different regions of China, as well as the demographical characteristics of symptomatic and asymptomatic lacunar stroke. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Data were derived from NESS-China Study that was conducted in 157 sites covering all 31 provinces, including 64 urban and 93 rural areas in mainland China between 1 September 2013 and 31 December 2013. Lacunar stroke was defined as being previously diagnosed according to the participants’ medical history. Patients were further divided into symptomatic or asymptomatic groups, depending on whether they were initially diagnosed with neurological symptoms. Participants 458 833 participants aged ≥20 years were enrolled in this study. Results A total of 7520 participants (1.63%) were diagnosed with lacunar stroke. The peak rate of diagnosis was between the ages of 70 and 79 years in both men and women. Geographically, the age-standardised and sex-standardised prevalence was highest in Northeast China (2495.3/100 000 persons) and lowest in Southeast China (599.7/100 000 persons), showing a geographical disparity. Over 90% of patients with lacunar stroke were diagnosed in secondary or tertiary hospitals. Patients with symptomatic lacunar stroke had significantly different demographic characteristics in age, sex and geographical regions compared with those who were asymptomatic. Conclusions In this study, the prevalence and distribution of lacunar stroke were reported at population level across China. Special attention and prevention should be given to the age, sex and geographical groups that are vulnerable to lacunar stroke.

    Abstract: Background: Dementia is a neuropsychiatric disorder with cognitive decline due to multiple factors. With the arrival of the aging population, the incidence of dementia has gradually increased. There is still no effective treatment for dementia, and therefore, the prevention of dementia has become crucial. Oxidative stress is considered to be one of the pathogenesis of dementia; therefore, antioxidant therapy and prevention of dementia have been gradually proposed. Objective: Our meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association of antioxidants with risk of dementia. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases for articles on antioxidants associated with dementia risk, and those containing cohort studies with high-dose versus low-dose controls were included in our meta-analysis. The resulting risk ratios (RR) and hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals were statistically analyzed using Stata12.0 free software. Results: A total of 17 articles were included in this meta-analysis. Of 98,264 participants, 7,425 had dementia after 3–23 years of follow-up. The results of the meta-analysis showed a trend towards a lower incidence of dementia with high intake of antioxidants (RR = 0.84, 95% CI 0.77–1.19 I 2 = 54.6%), but this was not statistically significant. High antioxidant intake significantly reduced the incidence of Alzheimer ‘s disease (RR = 0.85, 95% CI 0.79–0.92 I 2 = 45.5%), and we additionally carried out subgroup analyses by nutrient type, diet or supplement, region, and study quality score. Conclusion: Dietary intake of antioxidants or supplements reduces both the risk of dementia and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

    Abstract: 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Objectives: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Pain and psychological disorders are the 2 most commonly occurring symptom clusters in patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for anxiety and depressive disorders in patients with PHN. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Methods: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Retrospectively, we examined the potential risk factors of anxiety and depression among patients with PHN from the clinic medical records of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University from 2017 to 2019. The Chinese version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used to assess anxiety and depression. Patients were retrospectively allocated to 2 groups – PHN with and without anxiety/depression – and compared to identify the differential patient characteristics. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Results: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Cases of 661 patients who were diagnosed with PHN were included. Anxiety and depression developed in 69.0% (456/661) and 65.8% (435/661) of the enrolled patients with PHN, respectively. Results of univariate regression analyses showed that female sex, magnitude of pain intensity, time from onset of rash and extent of spread of rashes were significantly associated with anxiety and depression in patients with PHN. Multivariate analysis revealed that both anxiety and depression states significantly correlated with female sex, magnitude of pain intensity, and extent of spread of rashes. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Conclusions: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Anxiety and depression were not uncommon in patients with PHN. Women with PHN who experience severe pain and develop extensive rashes have a high risk of developing anxiety and depressive disorders.

    Abstract: Some scholars’ studies have demonstrated that Pro-kin balance system training is able to promote the recovery of the balance function in stroke patients. The present study has expanded on those studies, and was not merely limited to studying balance, but also encompassed walking and self-care abilities of the patients; furthermore, the association among balance and walking and self-care abilities was also explored. A total of 40 stroke patients were randomly and equally divided into 2 groups: the control group (n = 20) and the treatment group (n = 20). Both groups underwent conventional balance training, although the treatment group also underwent visual feedback balance training with the Pro-kin system. The balance function was assessed using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), the Timed “Up & Go” (TUG) test, and Pro-kin system parameters. The Pro-kin system parameters included the perimeter and ellipse area, which were both tested once with eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC). Walking ability was assessed using the Holden Walking Ability Scale, according to the Functional Ambulation Classification (FAC). The self-care abilities were assessed with the Barthel Index (BI). The tests were conducted prior to training, and 3 weeks after the end of the training programme. No significant differences were noted among the groups before the training. After 3 weeks of training, for both the groups, significant improvements in balance and the walking and self-care abilities were noted: The BBS value was significantly increased ( P   〈  .05), whereas the TUG, perimeter, and ellipse area with EO and EC measurements were significantly decreased after treatment ( P   〈  .05). The FAC and BI readings were significantly increased after treatment ( P   〈  0.05), and the treatment group outperformed the control group ( P   〈  .05). Furthermore, the balance function was shown to be strongly correlated with the walking and self-care abilities ( P   〈  .01). The present study has demonstrated that the use of the Pro-kin visual feedback balance training system in combination with conventional training is a viable method for improving walking and self-care abilities of stroke patients.

    Abstract: Dementia is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease that can lead to disability and death in humans, but there is still no effective prevention and treatment. Due to the neuroprotective effects of vitamin E, a large number of researchers have explored whether vitamin E can reduce the risk of dementia. Some researchers believe that vitamin E can reduce the risk of dementia, while others hold the opposite conclusion. We therefore performed a meta-analysis to clarify the relationship between them. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases for articles on the connection of dietary and supplementation vitamin E with dementia risk from inception through April 2022 using the main keywords “dementia,” “Alzheimer's disease,” “vitamin E,” and “tocopherol,” and used a random-utility model for pooled effect sizes. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals were derived using lower and higher doses as contrasts. Obtained data were shown and assessed using Stata12.0 free software. Results We included 15 articles in sum. Among them, there were nine articles containing AD. By comparing the highest intake with the lowest intake, Combined ORs for high intake were as follows: dementia (OR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.70–0.88 I 2 = 35.0%), Alzheimer's disease (OR = 0.78, 95% CI 0.64–0.94 I 2 = 36.9%). Subgroup analyses were also performed by study type, diet and supplementation, and NOS score. Conclusions High vitamin E intake from diet and supplements significantly reduces the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
