Abstract:
The article by Travis and colleagues (Pediatrics 59:695, May 1977) focuses on yet another possible complication of treating the child with croup and epiglottitis, noncardiogenic pulmonary edema. Although the mechanisms proposed by the authors for this phenomenon are intriguing, we wonder why a more common mechanism, that of aspiration of gastric contents, was not also considered. The level of consciousness in both of these patients was depressed, and both required intubation under general anesthesia in emergent circumstances.
