    Abstract: Little is known about the natural history of asymptomatic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Methods We conducted a prospective study at a quarantine center for coronavirus disease 2019 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We enrolled quarantined people with reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)–confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, collecting clinical data, travel and contact history, and saliva at enrollment and daily nasopharyngeal/throat swabs (NTSs) for RT-PCR testing. We compared the natural history and transmission potential of asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals. Results Between 10 March and 4 April 2020, 14 000 quarantined people were tested for SARS-CoV-2; 49 were positive. Of these, 30 participated in the study: 13 (43%) never had symptoms and 17 (57%) were symptomatic. Seventeen (57%) participants imported cases. Compared with symptomatic individuals, asymptomatic people were less likely to have detectable SARS-CoV-2 in NTS collected at enrollment (8/13 [62%] vs 17/17 [100%] ; P = .02). SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in 20 of 27 (74%) available saliva samples (7 of 11 [64%] in the asymptomatic group and 13 of 16 [81%] in the symptomatic group; P = .56). Analysis of RT-PCR positivity probability showed that asymptomatic participants had faster viral clearance than symptomatic participants (P  & lt; .001 for difference over the first 19 days). This difference was most pronounced during the first week of follow-up. Two of the asymptomatic individuals appeared to transmit SARS-CoV-2 to 4 contacts. Conclusions Asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection is common and can be detected by analysis of saliva or NTSs. The NTS viral loads fall faster in asymptomatic individuals, but these individuals appear able to transmit the virus to others.

    Abstract: 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Background: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) patients with acute obstructive hydrocephalus (AOH) who require external ventricular drainage (EVD) are at high risk for poor outcomes. Intraventricular fibrinolysis (IVF) with low-dose recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) can be used to improve patient outcomes. Here, we evaluated the impact of IVF on the risk of death and the functional outcomes in IVH patients with AOH. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Methods: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 This prospective cohort study included IVH patients with hypertensive intracranial haemorrhage complicated by AOH who required EVD. We evaluated the risk of death and the functional outcomes at 1 and 3 months, with a specific focus on the impact of combined EVD with IVF by low-dose rtPA. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Results: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Between November 30, 2011 and December 30, 2014, 80 patients were included. Forty-five patients were treated with EVD alone (EVD group) and 35 received IVF (EVD+IVF group). The 30- and 90-day mortality rates were lower in the EVD+IVF group than in the EVD group (42.2 vs. 11.4%, 〈 i 〉 p 〈 /i 〉 = 0.003, and 62.2 vs. 20%, 〈 i 〉 p 〈 /i 〉 & #x3c; 0.001, respectively). The Graeb scores were significantly lower in the EVD+IVF group than in the EVD group ( 〈 i 〉 p 〈 /i 〉 ≤ 0.001) during the first 3 days and on day 7 after assignment. The 30-day good functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] score 0–3) was also higher in the EVD+IVF group than in the EVD group (6.7 vs. 28.6%, 〈 i 〉 p 〈 /i 〉 = 0.008). However, the 90-day good functional outcome (mRS score 0–3) did not significantly increase in the EVD+IVF group (30.8% in the EVD group vs. 51.6% in the EVD+IVF group, 〈 i 〉 p 〈 /i 〉 = 0.112). 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Conclusions: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 In our prospective observational study, EVD+IVF was associated with a lower risk of death in IVH patients. EVD+IVF improved the chance of having a good functional outcome at 1 month; however, this result was no longer observed at 3 months.

    Abstract: Acid soils contain high concentrations of aluminum and ferrous ions, which limit crop growth and the available plant nutrients. The current work was to determine the effects of bio-organic fertilizer (BOF) application on soil quality and the growth of blueberry cultivated in acid soil. A completely randomized block design was arranged, with four doses of BOF (0, 2, 4, and 6 t ha –1 yr –1 ). Each treatment was carried out with four replicates. In the present work, soil quality properties such as pH, soil organic matter, available phosphorus, total nitrogen, aluminum (Al 3+ ), and iron (Fe 2 +) were measured. Additionally, the influence of organic fertilizer on the growth of blueberry (plant height, number of shoots, and leaves) was also investigated. The results indicated that both the rates of BOF (4 and 6 t ha −1 yr –1 ) significantly improved soil organic matter and available phosphorus. Also, BOF application greatly decreased the soil concentrations of Al 3+ and Fe 2 + compared to the control treatment. Similarly, 12 months after planting, the number of shoots and leaves was improved in the pots with BOF compared to that without BOF addition. From the results of this study, we recommend using BOF as the best measure for enhancing soil health and blueberry growth.

    Abstract: The Mekong Delta features acidic clay soil of alluvial origin with a soil texture ranging from silty clay to clay. The growth of wild blueberry plants in clay soils requires the addition of materials to enhance soil porosity and aeration. Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the effects of the combined use of biochar and compost on the growth, yield, and NPK uptake of blueberry ( Vaccinium tenellum ) cultivated in the Mekong Delta. Methods: The pot experiment had a 3 × 3 factorial design, containing the application of biochar at 0, 10, and 20 t ha -1 (B0, B10, and B20, respectively), compost at 0, 5, and 10 t ha -1 (C0, C5, and C10, respectively), and NPK at 45:20:20 kgha -1 according to the growth stages of blueberries. Results: The interaction between biochar and compost provided a more efficient response in terms of plant growth, yield, and NPK uptake. Notably, in the combined application of B20 and C10, NPK uptake and biomass of blueberries were significantly increased. However, only the concentration (gkg -1 ) of N (14.8) and K (3.82), except for P (1.37), in the blueberry leaves were below the Trevett threshold. Conclusion: This approach effectively mitigates the challenges posed by high clay content in the soil, which results in poorer soil porosity and aeration. The findings emphasize the potential benefits of tailored soil amendment strategies to optimize blueberry cultivation in similar environments.

    Abstract: Jasminum annamense subsp. annamense is a rare subspecies of Jasminum annamense belonging to the Oleaceae family. The aims of this study were to address the chemical profiles, antibacterial and antioxidant activities of acetone extract isolated from branches and leaves Jasminum annamense subsp. annamense for the first time. The chemical constituents of acetone extracts of studied samples were investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. There were a total of 24 components identified from the leaf extract, including lup-20(29)-en-3-one (27.93%), levodopa (19.68%), trans-cinnamic acid (7.58%), linolenic acid (6.35%) as the major compounds. Meanwhile, 26 components were reported from the branch extracts which are sorbitol (25.74%), lupeol (13.3%), cis-vaccenic acid (6.97%), glycerin (6.35%) and n-hexadecanoic acid (5.86%) were the main components. The two acetone extracts of J. annamense subsp. annamense exhibited antibacterial effect against Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis and Staphylococcus aureus based on disk diffusion assay. In addition, leaf and branch extracts of the studied species also display notable antioxidant activity in the ABTS assay with IC50 values of 311.75±3.39 and 664.46±3.732 µg/ml, respectively. This is the first report on the chemical and biological properties of J. annamense subsp. annamense and provides a promising perspective for developing good sources of antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds against both Gram positive and negative bacteria.

    Abstract: Fruit orchards in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD) are severely degraded due to many factors, such as low organic matter content, soil acidification, and poor soil management. Organic manures are considered to be a soil conservation measure that decreases soil degradation and acidity. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of soil organic amendments on the improvement of soil fertility and pomelo productivity. Two soil amendments, namely, chicken manure (CM) and cow dung (CD), were investigated for a period of three years at three pomelo orchards. The soil quality was assessed in two depths (0–20 and 20–50 cm), including the soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total nitrogen (Ntot), available phosphorus (Pavail), soil organic matter (SOM), bulk density (BD), and exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, and K). The results indicated that CD and CM improved soil fertility in topsoil layer (0–20 cm) due to an increase in soil pH, SOM, exchangeable Ca, Ntot, and Pavail. In addition, soil BD significantly reduced after CD and CM were supplied in the three consecutive years of study. The soil quality properties that significantly affected pomelo yield were SOM, Ntot, Pavail, and soil BD. Thus, these soil qualities may be considered as key factors for determining and assessing soil quality in fruit orchards in the VMD. More studies on the influence of organic manures on nutrient uptake and pomelo fruit quality are warranted.

    Abstract: Foliar application is a popular technique to supply mineral nutrients to crops. It also enhances nutrient use efficiencies, especially under limited soil fertility or restricted environmental conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of foliar application of phosphorus (P) with potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) on the nutrient uptake, yield, and fruit quality of pomelo. The experiments were conducted between 2018 and 2021 in three different sites of alluvial soils, including four treatments, namely, control (without foliar fertilization), FF1 (containing P, K, and Mg), FF2 (P, K, Mg, and Zn), and FF3 (Zn). The results indicated that the P, K, and Mg concentrations in leaves and fruits were significantly enhanced after the spraying of solutions FF1 and FF2 compared with the control and FF3. The application of FF1 and FF2 greatly improved the fruit quality, and the fruit yield response was as high as 4.0-5.0 t ha−1. Foliar Zn application (FF3) increased the Zn concentration in leaves, but there was no improvement in fruit Zn content, fruit quality, and yield compared to the control treatment. The results indicate that FF1 or FF2 could be used as a sustainable fertilizer strategy for pomelo trees because of its ability to improve the leaf and fruit nutrient concentration and enhance the fruit quality and productivity of pomelo.

    Abstract: The clinical syndrome of neonatal sepsis, comprising signs of infection, septic shock and organ dysfunction in infants ≤4 weeks of age, is a frequent sequel to bloodstream infection and mandates urgent antimicrobial therapy. Bacterial characterisation and antimicrobial susceptibility testing is vital for ensuring appropriate therapy, as high rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), especially in low-income and middle-income countries, may adversely affect outcome. Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) in Vietnam is a rapidly expanding city in Southeast Asia with a current population of almost 8 million. There are limited contemporary data on the causes of neonatal sepsis in Vietnam, and we hypothesise that the emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria is an increasing problem for the appropriate management of sepsis cases. In this study, we aim to investigate the major causes of neonatal sepsis and assess disease outcomes by clinical features, antimicrobial susceptibility profiles and genome composition. Method and analysis We will conduct a prospective observational study to characterise the clinical and microbiological features of neonatal sepsis in a major children’s hospital in HCMC. All bacteria isolated from blood subjected to whole genome sequencing. We will compare clinical variables and outcomes between different bacterial species, genome composition and AMR gene content. AMR gene content will be assessed and stratified by species, years and contributing hospital departments. Genome sequences will be analysed to investigate phylogenetic relationships. Ethics and dissemination The study will be conducted in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and the International Council on Harmonization Guidelines for Good Clinical Practice. Ethics approval has been provided by the Oxford Tropical Research Ethics Committee 35-16 and Vietnam Children’s Hospital 1 Ethics Committee 73/GCN/BVND1. The findings will be disseminated at international conferences and peer-reviewed journals. Trial registration number ISRCTN69124914 ; Pre-results.

    Abstract: Exchangeable cations and soil nutrients leach out/lost in the raised bed soils system through irrigation water and rainwater. Cover crops or crop residue mulching are considered sustainable agricultural measures because they prevent soil degradation and compaction and increase the soil ecological diversity. However, the impact of these on soil quality in fruit orchards in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta is not well studied. The present work aimed to assess the effect of cover crops (grass, pinto peanut) and rice straw mulching on change in soil chemical properties and productivity of pomelo. The 3-year (2019–2021) field experiment was conducted at Phu Huu Commune, Chau Thanh District, Hau Giang Province, Vietnam. Four treatments, control (no-cover crop), grass cover crop, mulching with rice straw (MRS), and pinto peanut cover crop were used. Soil samples were collected from the depth of 0–20 and 20–40 cm for analyzing soil pH, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), available phosphorus (AP), and soil organic matter (SOM). Results showed that MRS or cover crop by pinto peanut significantly decreased soil acidity in the topsoil layer. Soil fertility properties (TN, TP, AP, and SOM) at the depth 0–20 cm were greatly improved after the application of the mulched rice straw and cover crop by legume, thus improving pomelo yield. Further study is required to understand the effects of the cover crop with pinto peanut and rice straw mulching on the physical and biological properties of soil as well as nutrient uptake of pomelo orchards.
