    Abstract: In this paper, nickel-containing residue, a typical solid waste produced in the battery production process, was used to study the cavitation characteristics of ultrasonic waves in a liquid–solid reaction. The ultrasonically-enhanced leaching technology for multicomponent and complex nickel-containing residue was studied through systematic ultrasonic-conventional comparative experiments. An ultrasonic leaching kinetics model was established which provided reliable technological guidance and basic theory for the comprehensive utilization of nickel-containing residue. In the study, it was found that ultrasonically-enhanced leaching for 40 min obtained the same result as conventional leaching for 80 min, and the Ni extraction degree reached more than 95%. According to the kinetic fitting of the leaching process, it was found that the sulfuric acid leaching process belonged to the diffusion-controlled model of solid product layers under conventional and ultrasonic conditions, and the activation energy of the reaction was Ea1 = 17.74 kJ/mol and Ea2 = 5.04 kJ/mol, respectively.

    Abstract: For the comprehensive utilization of coal gangue, acid‐leached coal gangue was used as silicon source and part of carbon source, low ash anthracite and degreasing cotton were added respectively as supplementary carbon source, SiC and SiC fiber were prepared by carbothermal reduction method accordingly. The results show that the main components in leached coal gangue are amorphous SiO 2 and carbon, which are suitable for the synthesis of SiC as raw materials. The synthesis temperature and holding time have important influence on the synthesis of SiC, and the optimum synthesis parameters for SiC are at 1550°C for 4 hours; under this condition, the yield of SiC is 78.27%, and the specific surface area is 6750 cm 2 /g. The results show that the resulting products are essentially composed of β‐SiC with a minor amount of α‐SiC. Besides, based on the carbon fiber transformation method, SiC fiber was prepared by using leached coal gangue and degreasing cotton as raw materials. Therefore, it can be concluded that leached coal gangue is a very effective and inexpensive source for preparing SiC, and more importantly, this work has important economic and social significance to realize waste recycling and control pollution.

    Abstract: Various means have been proposed to solve problems such as high ash content and complex composition in the recycling of nickel-containing residue produced by battery manufacturing enterprises. Microwave roasting pretreatment is proposed to improve the nickel leaching rate from the residue. The effect of different experimental conditions like microwave roasting temperatures, roasting times, and microwave powers on the nickel leaching rate was studied. It was found that the effect of roasting temperature on the nickel leaching rate was more significant than those of roasting time and microwave power. Meanwhile, after microwave roasting pretreatment, the rate of nickel leaching from the residue could be increased by 20.43%, and weight of the material could also be reduced by more than 21%. After microwave roasting at 450°C, there was no significant change in the main phases of the material, but the surface of the particles exhibited an apparent stratified dissociation phenomenon. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the parameters of microwave roasting with nickel leaching rate as the response value. The results showed that the nickel leaching rate could reach 93.11% for roasting at the microwave power of 962 W for 6.2 min under the temperature of 452°C.

    Abstract: Permittivity is a vitally important parameter for the description of the absorption and heating characteristics of materials under microwave irradiation. In this paper, the permittivity of nickel-containing sludge (NCS), which is created during battery production as a cheap secondary resource, was measured at temperatures from 20 °C to 600 °C at 2.45 GHz using the cavity perturbation method. In addition, the loss tangent (tanδ) and penetration depth (Dp) of microwaves into the material were calculated. The results of the permittivity study show that the dielectric constant (ε′) and dielectric loss factor (ε″) of the NCS increase with increasing temperature. The variations of the loss tangent (tanδ) and penetration depth (Dp) with the temperature can be divided into two parts at 200 °C. The effect of the initial moisture content on the dielectric properties of the material is notably greater than that of the temperature, which was confirmed by the heating curve. After microwave pretreatment, the nickel-containing phase is transformed into NiO, while the weight of NCS is reduced by more than 20%, the particle size is significantly reduced and the leaching time reduce 20 min than that of conventional heating.

    Abstract: Heterosis has been extensively utilized in plant breeding, however, the underlying molecular mechanism remains largely elusive. Maize ( Zea mays ), which exhibits strong heterosis, is an ideal material for studying heterosis. Results In this study, there is faster imbibition and development in reciprocal crossing Zhengdan958 hybrids than in their parent lines during seed germination. To investigate the mechanism of heterosis of maize germination, comparative transcriptomic analyses were conducted. The gene expression patterns showed that 1324 (47.27%) and 1592 (66.44%) of the differential expression genes between hybrids and either parental line display parental dominance up or higher levels in the reciprocal cross of Zhengdan958, respectively. Notably, these genes were mainly enriched in metabolic pathways, including carbon metabolism, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum, etc. Conclusion Our results provide evidence for the higher expression level genes in hybrid involved in metabolic pathways acting as main contributors to maize seed germinating heterosis. These findings provide new insights into the gene expression variation of maize embryos and improve the understanding of maize seed germination heterosis.

    Abstract: Motion characteristics of CoP (Centre of Pressure, the point of application of the resultant ground reaction force acting on the plate) are useful for foot type characteristics detection. To date, only few studies have investigated the nonlinear characteristics of CoP velocity and acceleration during the stance phase. The aim of this study is to investigate whether CoP regularity is different among four foot types (normal foot, pes valgus, hallux valgus and pes cavus); this might be useful for classification and diagnosis of foot injuries and diseases. To meet this goal, sample entropy, a measure of time-series regularity, was used to quantify the CoP regularity of four foot types. Methods One hundred and sixty five subjects that had the same foot type bilaterally (48 subjects with healthy feet, 22 with pes valgus, 47 with hallux valgus, and 48 with pes cavus) were recruited for this study. A Footscan® system was used to collect CoP data when each subject walked at normal and steady speed. The velocity and acceleration in medial-lateral (ML) and anterior-posterior (AP) directions, and resultant velocity and acceleration were derived from CoP. The sample entropy is the negative natural logarithm of the conditional probability that a subseries of length m that matches pointwise within a tolerance r also matches at the next point. This was used to quantify variables of CoP velocity and acceleration of four foot types. The parameters r (the tolerance) and m (the matching length) for sample entropy calculation have been determined by an optimal method. Results It has been found that in order to analyze all CoP parameters of velocity and acceleration during the stance phase of walking gait, for each variable there is a different optimal r value. On the contrary, the value m=4 is optimal for all variables. Sample entropies of both velocity and acceleration in AP direction were highly correlated with their corresponding resultant variables for r 〉 0.91. The sample entropy of the velocity in AP direction was moderately correlated with the one of the acceleration in the same direction (r≥0.673), as well as with the resultant acceleration (r≥0.660). The sample entropy of resultant velocity was moderately correlated with the one of the acceleration in AP direction, as well as with the resultant acceleration (for the both r≥0.689). Moderate correlations were found between variables for the left foot and their corresponding variables for the right foot. Sample entropies of AP velocity, resultant velocity, AP acceleration, and resultant acceleration of the right foot as well as AP velocity and resultant velocity of the left foot were, respectively, significantly different among the four foot types. Conclusions It can be concluded that the sample entropy of AP velocity (or the resultant velocity) of the left foot, ML velocity, resultant velocity, ML acceleration and resultant acceleration could serve for evaluation of foot types or selection of appropriate footwear.
