    Abstract: (1) Background: The combined n-back + Go/NoGo paradigm was used to investigate whether audiovisual interactions interfere with or facilitate WM. (2) Methods: College students were randomly assigned to perform the working memory task based on either a single (visual or auditory) or dual (audiovisual) stimulus. Reaction times, accuracy, and WM performance were compared across the two groups to investigate effects of audiovisual interactions. (3) Results: With low cognitive load (2-back), auditory stimuli had no effect on visual working memory, whereas visual stimuli had a small effect on auditory working memory. With high cognitive load (3-back), auditory stimuli interfered (large effect size) with visual WM, and visual stimuli interfered (medium effect size) with auditory WM. (4) Conclusions: Audiovisual effects on WM follow the resource competition theory, and the cognitive load of a visual stimulus is dominated by competition; vision always interferes with audition, and audition conditionally interferes with vision. With increased visual cognitive load, competitive effects of audiovisual interactions were more obvious than those with auditory stimuli. Compared with visual stimuli, audiovisual stimuli showed significant interference only when visual cognitive load was high. With low visual cognitive load, the two stimulus components neither facilitated nor interfered with the other in accordance with a speed–accuracy trade-off.

    Abstract: We present the results for CAPRI Round 54, the 5th joint CASP‐CAPRI protein assembly prediction challenge. The Round offered 37 targets, including 14 homodimers, 3 homo‐trimers, 13 heterodimers including 3 antibody–antigen complexes, and 7 large assemblies. On average ~70 CASP and CAPRI predictor groups, including more than 20 automatics servers, submitted models for each target. A total of 21 941 models submitted by these groups and by 15 CAPRI scorer groups were evaluated using the CAPRI model quality measures and the DockQ score consolidating these measures. The prediction performance was quantified by a weighted score based on the number of models of acceptable quality or higher submitted by each group among their five best models. Results show substantial progress achieved across a significant fraction of the 60+ participating groups. High‐quality models were produced for about 40% of the targets compared to 8% two years earlier. This remarkable improvement is due to the wide use of the AlphaFold2 and AlphaFold2‐Multimer software and the confidence metrics they provide. Notably, expanded sampling of candidate solutions by manipulating these deep learning inference engines, enriching multiple sequence alignments, or integration of advanced modeling tools, enabled top performing groups to exceed the performance of a standard AlphaFold2‐Multimer version used as a yard stick. This notwithstanding, performance remained poor for complexes with antibodies and nanobodies, where evolutionary relationships between the binding partners are lacking, and for complexes featuring conformational flexibility, clearly indicating that the prediction of protein complexes remains a challenging problem.

    Abstract: Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the application of DNA ploidy analysis in large-scale population screening for cervical cancer. Methods: From March 2016 to March 2019, eligible subjects were enrolled and recommended to undergo DNA ploidy analysis, the ThinPrep cytology test (TCT), and high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) detection concurrently. Patients with positive results were recommended for colposcopy, and biopsy diagnosis was regarded as the “gold standard.” We compared the test efficiencies of the 3 methods and compared the efficiency and accuracy of the TCT in our hospital and the “2-cancer screening” project in Hubei Province during the same period. Results: Among 20,574 women, the positive rates of DNA ploidy analysis, cytology, and hrHPV testing were 4.01%, 4.71%, and 16.28%, respectively. The sensitivities of these methods for screening for grade 2+ cervical intraepithelial neoplasia were 0.70, 0.68, and 0.96, and their specificities were 0.79, 0.82, and 0.45, respectively. On comparing DNA ploidy analysis with the TCT, there was no significant difference in the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and missed diagnosis rate. In opportunistic screening and the 2-cancer screening project, the positive rates of cytology were 4.71% and 2.87%, respectively. And the efficiency and accuracy of the TCT in opportunistic screening were higher than in the 2-cancer screening project. Conclusion: Therefore, DNA ploidy analysis, which is of low-cost and does not depend on cytopathologists, can replace cytology and be applied in large-scale population screening for cervical cancer.

    Abstract: Approximately 94% of sensory information acquired by humans originates from the visual and auditory channels. Such information can be temporarily stored and processed in working memory, but this system has limited capacity. Working memory plays an important role in higher cognitive functions and is controlled by central executive function. Therefore, elucidating the influence of the central executive function on information processing in working memory, such as in audiovisual integration, is of great scientific and practical importance. Purpose This study used a paradigm that combined N-back and Go/NoGo tasks, using simple Arabic numerals as stimuli, to investigate the effects of cognitive load (modulated by varying the magnitude of N) and audiovisual integration on the central executive function of working memory as well as their interaction. Methods Sixty college students aged 17–21 years were enrolled and performed both unimodal and bimodal tasks to evaluate the central executive function of working memory. The order of the three cognitive tasks was pseudorandomized, and a Latin square design was used to account for order effects. Finally, working memory performance, i.e., reaction time and accuracy, was compared between unimodal and bimodal tasks with repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results As cognitive load increased, the presence of auditory stimuli interfered with visual working memory by a moderate to large extent; similarly, as cognitive load increased, the presence of visual stimuli interfered with auditory working memory by a moderate to large effect size. Conclusion Our study supports the theory of competing resources, i.e., that visual and auditory information interfere with each other and that the magnitude of this interference is primarily related to cognitive load.

    Abstract: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor TrkB-T1 were recently found to be expressed in cardiomyocytes. However, the functional role of cardiomyocyte-derived BDNF in heart pathophysiology is not yet fully known. Recent studies revealed that BDNF-TrkB pathway plays a critical role to maintain integrity of cardiac structure and function, cardiac pathology and regeneration of myocardial infarction (MI). Therefore, the BDNF-TrkB pathway may be a novel target for myocardial pathophysiology in the adult heart. Approach and results In the present study, we established a cardiomyocyte-derived BDNF conditional knockout mouse in which BDNF expression in developing cardiomyocytes is ablated under the control of the Myosin heavy chain 6 (MYH6) promoter. The results of the present study show that ablation of cardiomyocyte-derived BDNF during development does not impair survival, growth or reproduction; however, in the young adult heart, it causes cardiomyocyte death, degeneration of the myocardium, cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, left atrial appendage thrombosis, decreased cardiac function, increased cardiac inflammation and ROS activity, and metabolic disorders, leading to heart failure (HF) in the adult heart and eventually resulting in a decrease in the one-year survival rate. In addition, ablation of cardiomyocyte-derived BDNF during the developmental stage leads to exacerbation of cardiac dysfunction and poor regeneration after MI in adult hearts. Conclusion Cardiomyocyte-derived BDNF is irreplaceable for maintaining the integrity of cardiac structure and function in the adult heart and regeneration after MI. Therefore, the BDNF-TrkB pathway will be a novel target for myocardial pathophysiology in the adult heart.

    Abstract: Anxiety and depression are among the greatest contributors to the global burden of diseases. The close associations of personality traits with anxiety and depression have been widely described. However, the common practice of sum scores in previous studies limits the understanding of the fine-grained connections between different personality traits and anxiety and depression symptoms and cannot explore and compare the risk or protective effects of personality traits on anxiety and depression symptoms. Objective We aimed to determine the fine-grained connections between different personality traits and anxiety and depression symptoms and identify the detrimental or protective effects of different personality traits on anxiety and depression symptoms. Methods A total of 536 college students from China were recruited online, and the average age was 19.98 ± 1.11. The Chinese version of the Ten-Item Personality Inventory, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 was used to investigate the personality traits and symptoms of anxiety and depression of participants after they understood the purpose and filling method of the survey and signed the informed consent. The demographic characteristics were summarized, and the scale scores were calculated. The network model of personality traits and symptoms of anxiety and depression was constructed, and bridge expected influence (BEI) was measured to evaluate the effect of personality traits on anxiety and depression. The edge accuracy and BEI stability were estimated, and the BEI difference and the edge weight difference were tested. Results In the network, 29 edges (indicating partial correlations between variables) bridged the personality community and the anxiety and depression community, among which the strongest correlations were extraversion-fatigue, agreeableness-suicidal ideation, conscientiousness-uncontrollable worry, neuroticism-excessive worry, neuroticism-irritability, and openness-feelings of worthlessness. Neuroticism had the highest positive BEI value (0.32), agreeableness had the highest negative BEI value (−0.27), and the BEI values of neuroticism and agreeableness were significantly different from those of most other nodes ( p   & lt; 0.05). Conclusion There are intricate correlations between personality traits and the symptoms of anxiety and depression in college students. Neuroticism was identified as the most crucial risk trait for depression and anxiety symptoms, while agreeableness was the most central protective trait.

    Abstract: To analyze the clinical efficacy and safety of fractional microneedle radiofrequency (FMR) for facial atrophic acne scars in a real‐world setting. Methods The clinical data of patients with atrophic acne scars who had received FMR therapy from February 2018 to August 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The improvement of atrophic acne scars was assessed using the ECCA Grading Scale (échelle d'évaluation clinique des cicatrices d'acné), Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS), and modified Manchester Scar Scale (mMSS). Adverse reactions during FMR treatment were also recorded. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of FMR for atrophic acne scars. Results A total of 126 patients with facial atrophic acne scars were included. A total of 590 FMR treatment sessions were accomplished, with each of 82 patients receiving 4 or more treatment sessions, and 1 receiving a maximum of 14 sessions. All patients showed improvement in symptoms after FMR treatment, with moderate to significant improvement (ECCA score reduction of 26%–100%) in 92 (73.0%) patients. As the number of treatment sessions increased, the ECCA score gradually decreased from an average of 85.6 before to 35.0 after FMR. The average scores for distortion, color, and visual analogue scale (VAS) of mMSS all showed certain reductions. The change in GAIS score indicated improvement after treatment, with minimal improvement in 16 patients (12.7%), good improvement in 57 patients (45.2%), significant improvement in 45 patients (35.7%), and optimal improvement in 8 patients (6.4%). The univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that the long pulse width and the number of FMR treatment sessions were positively associated with clinical efficacy. Compared to the short pulse‐width group (200 ms), the longer pulse‐width group (300 ms) (odds ratio [OR] = 8.3, p = 0.003) and the even longer pulse‐width group (400–500 ms) (OR = 52.6, p 〈 0.001) demonstrated stronger efficacies. Patients who received more than three treatment sessions had better outcomes compared to those who received three or fewer treatment sessions (OR = 4.0, p = 0.036). All patients experienced posttreatment transient erythema, but no crusting, infection, or blister. Six cases developed grid‐like erythema around 1 month posttreatment and one case experienced hyperpigmentation, both of which resolved within 1–3 months after appropriate management. Conclusion FMR is a safe and effective treatment modality for improving facial atrophic acne scars, and the number of FMR treatment sessions and pulse width are associated with clinical efficacy.

    Abstract: To assess the diagnostic value of 18 F-NaF PET/CT in diagnosing bone metastases in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) using visual and quantitative analyses. 164 patients with NPC who underwent 18 F-NaF PET/CT between 2017 and 2021 were included. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were calculated. All bone lesions were divided into metastatic bone lesion group and benign lesion group; the benign lesion group was further subdivided into benign lesion without osteophyte and fracture group (CT images showing no osteophyte, no fracture), and benign lesion with osteophyte and fracture group (CT images showing typical osteophytes and fractures), the differences in maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) were compared between every two groups, and the diagnostic cut-off values were derived from receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC). Quantitative data were expressed as mean ± SD, multiple continuous variables were compared using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multiple comparisons among more than two groups were made using the Bonferroni method. The sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy of 18 F-NaF PET/CT for the diagnosis of bone metastases in NPC were 97.1%, 94.6%, and 95.1% based on the patient level and 99.5%, 91.5%, and 96.4% based on the lesion level, respectively. The SUVmax was significantly different between the metastatic bone lesion group and the benign lesion without osteophyte and fracture group ( p & lt; 0.05); the area under the curve was 0.865, the threshold was 12.5, the sensitivity was 0.912, and the specificity was 0.656. Visual analysis of 18 F-NaF PET/CT has high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing bone metastases in NPC. After excluding osteophytes and fracture lesions based on CT findings, using SUVmax ≥12.5 as the threshold can be an important reference for the differential diagnosis of bone metastases and benign bone lesions in patients with NPC.
