    Abstract: In this study, an attempt is made to simulate the historical length variations of Hintereisferner (Austria). Key elements in the model are: (1) reconstruction of the local climate (Vent); (2) multiple linear regression analysis between measured climate and mass-balance variations; (3) reconstruction of the mass balance with (1) and (2); (4) a one-dimensional numerical ice-flow model forced by the mass-balance history. Progress relative to the previous, similar studies can be summarized as two points: (1) the mass balance is reconstructed more carefully, and (2) sensitivity experiments show that uncertainties and assumptions in the flow model hardly affect the response of the glacier to climate fluctuations with a time-scale of the order of (or larger than) the response time of the glacier (around 100 year). In the regression equation, mass-balance fluctuations are determined by the temperature during the ablation season and the annual precipitation. Cloudiness has no effect. The local temperature can be reconstructed as far back as 1755 with the temperature series from Basel, but the reconstruction of precipitation is unreliable prior to 1900. Mainly due to this point, a simulation starting in 1755 failed completely. However, in a run starting in 1894, the total retreat since then (2.2 km) was reproduced within 10%.

    Abstract: We present a model study investigating the summer evolution of supraglacial lakes on the Greenland ice margin. Using a one-dimensional (1-D) model we calculate the surface ablation for a bare ice surface and beneath supraglacial lakes for 30 days in the summers of 1999 and 2001. The surface ablation beneath the lake was enhanced by 110% in 1999 and 170% in 2001 compared with the ablation for bare ice. We then use the results from the 1-D model to further model the vertical and horizontal evolution of the supraglacial lakes, the results of which are compared with satellite images. Within the region of the ice sheet where supraglacial lakes presently occur, the area covered by supraglacial lakes is found to be more or less independent of the summer melt rate but controlled by topography. We therefore predict that, inside this region, the area covered by supraglacial lakes will remain constant even in a warmer climate. However, in a warmer climate, surface melting will occur higher on the ice sheet where small surface slopes favour formation of large supraglacial lakes. Enhanced surface melting beneath such lakes is a hitherto overlooked feedback mechanism related to climate warming.

    Abstract: Abstract. This paper uses hindcasts (1981–2010) to investigate the sources of skill in seasonal hydrological forecasts for Europe. The hindcasts were produced with WUSHP (Wageningen University Seamless Hydrological Prediction system). Skill was identified in a companion paper. In WUSHP, hydrological processes are simulated by running the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) hydrological model forced with an ensemble of bias-corrected output from the seasonal forecast system 4 (S4) of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). We first analysed the meteorological forcing. The precipitation forecasts contain considerable skill for the first lead month but hardly any significant skill at longer lead times. Seasonal forecasts of temperature have more skill. Skill in summer temperature is related to climate change and is more or less independent of lead time. Skill in February and March is unrelated to climate change. Different sources of skill in hydro-meteorological variables were isolated with a suite of specific hydrological hindcasts akin to ensemble streamflow prediction (ESP). These hindcasts show that in Europe, initial conditions of soil moisture (SM) form the dominant source of skill in run-off. From April to July, initial conditions of snow contribute significantly to the skill. Some remarkable skill features are due to indirect effects, i.e. skill due to forcing or initial conditions of snow and soil moisture at an earlier stage is stored in the hydrological state (snow and/or soil moisture) of a later stage, which then contributes to persistence of skill. Skill in evapotranspiration (ET) originates mostly in the meteorological forcing. For run-off we also compared the full hindcasts (with S4 forcing) with two types of ESP (or ESP-like) hindcasts (with identical forcing for all years). Beyond the second lead month, the full hindcasts are less skilful than the ESP (or ESP-like) hindcasts, because inter-annual variations in the S4 forcing consist mainly of noise which enhances degradation of the skill.

    Abstract: Ground‐based observations of broadband, narrowband (in Landsat thematic mapper bands 2, 0.52–0.60 μm, and 4, 0.76–0.90 μm), and bidirectional reflectance are used to study the albedo of blue ice and snow. The measured broadband albedos for blue ice and snow are 0.60 and 0.78, respectively. The narrowband albedos in bands 2 and 4 for snow are 0.97 and 0.86, respectively, and for blue ice are 0.87 and 0.51, respectively. The measurements are point values and used to verify existing weighting functions between the broadband and narrowband albedos. Blue ice data do not comply with the existing functions. Furthermore, a new function for blue ice is derived. A simple two‐stream model is used to illustrate the behavior of the snow and ice albedo as a function of reflection and absorption. The bidirectional reflectance measurements are used to derive bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs) for snow and blue ice. The BRDF of blue ice exhibits a maximum brightening in the forward limb around a zenith angle close to the solar zenith angle, indicating specular reflectance of blue ice which is not visible for snow and glacier ice surfaces.
