Abstract: The following article presents a computation procedure that enables us to simulate the dynamic states of electric machines with a laminated magnetic core, with direct consideration of the eddy current losses. The presented approach enables a significant reduction of the simulation process computational complexity. The verification of the obtained data correctness is based on a detailed balance of energy and power in the investigated system. The correctness of the obtained results was also confirmed by comparing them with the results included in norms that describe the losses in laminated sheets. The presented approach is based on expressing the equivalent permeability of transformer metal sheets by using RC or RL circuits. The impedances of these circuits are treated as the transmittance of Infinite Impulse Response filters (IIR) of the Laplace s variable. In this form they are implemented in direct calculations of the dynamics of electric machines based on field-circuital models, using the Finite Element Method (FEM). In this way, we present the method of including eddy current losses in laminated metal circuits of chokes or transformers, during calculations using the finite element method, with the IIR filter in the domain of the variable s of the Laplace transform. Eddy current losses are directly included in the calculation process. Therefore, they have a direct impact on the transient state waveforms. However, the use of the Laplace variable s caused an excessive increase in the number of state variables, and the overall computational efficiency of the presented method is sufficiently low so as to be used in the simulation process of electrical machine dynamic states with a relatively large number of elements in the FE Model.

Abstract: In this paper a system of a grid side and a generator side converters, both working with a common capacitor, is presented. The 6-phase asymmetric inset-type SMPMSM generator is used. A large pole pair number of this generator enables a gearless wind turbine operation. The fundamental and 3rd harmonic cooperation is used to increase the generator performance. This is accomplished by means of the 3rd harmonic current injection. For that reason the generator side converter must have a neutral connection.

Abstract: The article presents an original method for numerical determination of the value of magnetic co-energy of a transverse construction motor. The aim of the developed method is initial determination of the co-energy value for the analyzed structure in the function of rotor rotation angle. The main requirement set to the presented method was the lowest possible complexity of the process computation, lack of the necessity to apply costly dedicated software, as well as creating construction 3D models. These requirements were met by applying specific cross-section/development of the analyzed machine geometry, as well as application of specific boundary conditions, which enabled reduction of the analyzed problem to solving a Poisson equation in 2D. The calculations were done with the Finite Element Method.

Abstract: The article presents an innovative construction of the Axial Flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) machine designed for generator performance, which provides the shape of induced voltage that enables estimation of the speed and rotational angle of the machine rotor. Design solutions were proposed, the aim of which is to limit energy losses as a result of the occurrence of eddy currents. The method of direct estimation of the value of the rotational speed and rotational angle of the machine rotor was proposed and investigated on the basis of the measurements of induced voltages and machine phase currents. The advantage of the machine is the utilization of simple and easy-to-use computational procedures. The acquired results were compared with the results obtained for estimation performed by using the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF).

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to develop the method of optimal control of the three‐phase inverter system for autonomous and power grid operation. The presented method will also allow the cooperation of several inverters creating an autonomous network. This system should also be able to reduce demanded higher harmonics in power voltage according to the list of numbers of these harmonics. In this article the authors describe a system that is used to create a symmetrical three‐phase voltage. The supply power is taken from the renewal source. The inverter system as well as cooperation of several such systems to create an autonomous network is under consideration. The generated three‐phase voltage should be symmetrical even when the RL load is not symmetrical or else it changes in impulse. Cooperation of the system with the autonomous network is also under consideration. The task is to supply the set current of the basic harmonic to the power grid and possibly to reduce voltage higher harmonics on output terminals of the system. Design/methodology/approach The method of optimal control for a quadratic objective function was applied. Findings In the autonomous system the presented method provides a symmetrical three‐phase voltage with an unknown unsymmetrical constant or pulsed load. When operating for a power grid the system provides the desired current related to the basic harmonic of the grid voltages. In both cases the demanded higher harmonics of the grid voltages are reduced. Originality/value Filter of the main harmonic for the power grid voltage was applied. Applied numerical solutions and obtained simulations are also original.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to compare the methods of calculating the parameters of air-cored stator flux permanent magnet generator and to compare these results with the measurements of the designed and manufactured generator. The generator is to be designed for operation in a wind power plant. Design/methodology/approach An analytical method and 2D and 3D finite element methods (FEMs) were used to calculate the parameters of the coreless permanent magnet axial generator. The analytical method and 2D FEM were applied to individual cross-sections through the air gap of the machine. After the design and construction of the generator and measuring station, the results of calculations and measurements were compared. Findings The results of investigated calculation methods and measurements were found to be mutually compatible. Analytical methods and 2D FEM required proper interpretation of the results when comparing them with the 3D FEM. The results of the measurements and calculations showed the usefulness of the generator for operation in a wind power plant. Originality/value Full comparison of results of 2D and 3D calculations with the results of the measurements on the machine model confirmed the usefulness of fast 2D methods for the analysis of coreless generators. The results differed by the effects of leakage inductance of windings’ front connections. The application of an axial generator designed with the described methods in a wind turbine showed its proper operation.

Abstract: Great significance is given to the use of energy from renewable sources, especially in industrial and municipal applications. The present article is devoted to the optimal control of a DFIG generator with the help of a rotor-side converter (RSC). Its aim is to ensure the delivery of the voltage of a three-phase network with appropriate parameters while operating in an islanded grid. Such a grid is usually characterized by an uneven loading of each phase. Additionally, the load of these phases changes randomly in time. In order to ensure the assumed parameters of line voltages, the optimal control is applied with a square cost function. This ensures the shape of voltage that is in accordance with the referential voltage. Moreover, higher harmonics with a given number are detected and reduced. The simulations that were executed confirm compliance with the conditions of the parameters of the output voltage in the islanded grid. Attention was paid to oscillations in the power flowing through the rotor-side converter (RSC). The methods to accelerate the suppression of these oscillations are presented.
