Abstract: Constant coefficient one-dimensional linear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations (PDEs) are often used for description of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) phenomena during transient conditions in piping systems. In the past, these systems of equations have been numerically solved with method of characteristics (MOCs). The MOC method is actually the most efficient and accurate method for description of the single-phase transient in the cold liquid where the constant coefficient mathematical model describes phenomenon with sufficient accuracy. In energy production systems where hot pressurized liquid is used for heat transfer between the heat source and the steam generator, more complex and nonlinear mathematical models are needed to describe transient flow and these models cannot be solved with MOC method because the models are not constant. In addition, the MOC method can be used for pipes having discontinuities like elbows, geometrical changes, material properties changes, etc., but only with some extra numerical modeling. An interesting alternative is explicit characteristic upwind numerical method, known as Godunov’s method that is frequently used for nonlinear systems or systems where properties change with position. In the present study, applicability of the Godunov’s method for the FSI analyses is tested with eight first order PDEs mathematical model. The conventional linear mathematical model is improved with convective term that makes the system nonlinear and additional terms that enable simulations of the FSI in arbitrarily shaped piping systems located in a plane. Two PDEs describe pressure waves in the single-phase fluid and six PDEs describe axial, lateral, and rotational stress waves in the pipe. The applied system of equations has stiff source terms. This numerical problem is solved introducing implicit iterations. The proposed model is verified with a rod impact experiment that is carried out on single-elbow pipe hanging on wires. Godunov’s method is found as a very promising numerical method for simulations of the FSI problems.

Abstract: The paper presents a procedure for hydraulic design and analysis of the blade geometry of a high specific speed runner of the Saxo-type double-regulated vertical axial turbine. The meridional through-flow in the passage from the conical guide vane apparatus to the draft-tube elbow is designed by a streamline curvature method (SCM). To validate the design method and predictions and to investigate the design duty point and a number of off-design operating regimes, an extensive CFD simulation inside the entire turbine water-passage is performed. The flow patterns downstream the guide vane apparatus and the runner exit flow are analyzed. The focus of the analysis is on distribution of the angular momentum alongside the turbine, as well as on its impact on the flow around the runner blades. The SCM design procedure presented in the paper proves to be a robust and accurate tool for the runner blade row design.

Abstract: 〈 i 〉 Objectives: 〈 /i 〉 The immunohistochemical phenotype, distribution and significance of proliferation of myofibroblasts in laryngeal epithelial hyperplastic lesions (EHL) and squamous carcinoma (SC) were analyzed. 〈 i 〉 Methods: 〈 /i 〉 Samples of 42 resected larynxes and 40 laryngeal biopsies of EHL and SC were included. Immunohistochemistry was performed using antibodies against vimentin, α-smooth muscle actin (SMA), desmin and leukocyte common antigen. 〈 i 〉 Results: 〈 /i 〉 Myofibroblasts were vimentin- and SMA-positive, and were found exclusively in SC, indicating that invasion beyond the basement membrane is necessary to evoke a myofibroblastic stromal reaction. We observed two patterns of stromal reaction in SC: one was characterized by a marked proliferation of myofibroblasts and desmoplasia, with scarce lymphocytic infiltration; this pattern tended to be associated with well- or moderately differentiated SC. The other was characterized by few myofibroblasts, weak desmoplasia, and dense lymphocytic infiltration; the latter pattern tended to be associated with moderately or poorly differentiated SC. The degree of myofibroblast proliferation was inversely related to the density of lymphocytic infiltration. Antibodies against SMA also stained stromal blood vessels, demonstrating a gradual increase of vessel density as the grade of EHL increased. 〈 i 〉 Conclusions: 〈 /i 〉 Immunohistochemical analysis of myofibroblasts provides useful information on the phenotypic characteristics of the stroma in laryngeal EHL and SC, and can serve as an additional marker of invasion.

Abstract: The conformational properties of 1,3-diindolylureas and thioureas were studied by a combination of heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy and quantum mechanics calculations. NOE experiments showed that the anti–anti conformer along the C7–N7α bonds was predominant in DMSO- d 6 solution in the absence of anions. Anion-induced changes in the 1 H and 15 N chemical shifts confirm the weak binding of chloride anions with negligible conformational changes. Strong deshielding of ureido protons and moderate deshielding of indole NH was observed upon the addition of acetate, benzoate, bicarbonate and dihydrogen phosphate, which indicated that the predominant hydrogen bond interactions occurred at the urea donor groups. Binding of oxo-anions caused conformational changes along the C7–N7α bonds and the syn – syn conformer was preferred for anion–receptor complexes. The conformational changes upon anion binding are in good agreement with energetic preferences established by ab initio calculations.

Abstract: Lipoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm occurring mostly in children under the age of three. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is mandatory for planning the treatment. The main aim of this study is to establish the cytological features of lipoblastoma and to answer the question: “Is cytological diagnosis of lipoblastoma reliable?” Preoperative fine‐needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and tissue sections of three children treated for lipoblastoma at the Division of Pediatrics, University Medical Center, Ljubljana, Slovenia, in the period from 1997 to 2004 were reexamined. The Giemsa‐ and Papanicolaou‐stained FNAB smears were moderately or poorly cellular and contained lipocytes, lipoblasts, and spindle cells in various proportions. The tumor cells were in clusters and tissue fragments or as single cells. Thin branching capillaries were observed in most of the clusters and tissue fragments. In the background, abundant myxoid extracellular material and naked oval nuclei were present. In the first case, the cytological diagnosis was benign soft‐tissue tumor, in the second the diagnosis was not conclusive and the last case was correctly diagnosed as lipoblastoma. In the differential diagnosis of the second case, both lipoblastoma and liposarcoma were considered cytologically as well as histologically. At 7‐yr follow‐up, there is no evidence of the disease. Thus, we conclude that lipoblastoma with typical cytological features could be accurately diagnosed by FNAB. However, tumors containing numerous lipoblasts could pose a diagnostic problem. Diagn. Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the biological behaviour of the marginal epithelium, that proliferates and eventually covers laryngeal granulomas, and to reveal the applicability of the recently re-introduced Ljubljana classification when reporting reactive epithelial hyperplastic lesions. A retrospective clinical and histomorphological analysis was performed on 149 laryngeal granuloma biopsies. Epithelial changes were classified according to the Ljubljana classification into normal epithelium; simple, abnormal, or atypical hyperplasia; and carinoma in situ . Atrophic epithelium, not evaluated separately in the Ljubljana classification, was additionally assessed. Simple hyperplasia was found in 98 cases (65.8 per cent), abnormal hyperplasia in seven (4.7 per cent), atrophic epithelium in 24 (16.1 per cent), and normal squamous epithelium in 20 (13.4 per cent). Atypical hyperplasia and carcinoma in situ were not observed. The results of our study clearly showed that the proliferation of the covering epithelium mostly in the form of simple hyperplasia, is entirely reactive and therefore reversible. No epithelial hyperplastic lesions were found that were previously described to be associated with an increased risk of malignant alteration, namely atypical hyperplasia and carcinoma in situ . However, since an initial growth of an invasive malignant neoplasm might macroscopically imitate the appearance of laryngeal granuloma, a histological examination in all aetiological forms of laryngeal granulomas is required. By clearly discerning the benign nature of epithelial changes in laryngeal granulomas, the recently re-evaluated and further formulated Ljubljana classification may also influence the clinical handling of patients.
