Abstract: The shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis , concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora.

Abstract: The SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern (VOC) Delta was first detected in India in October 2020. The first imported cases of the Delta variant in Brazil were identified in April 2021 in the southern region, followed by more cases in different regions during the following months. By early September 2021, Delta was already the dominant variant in the southeastern (87%), southern (73%), and northeastern (52%) Brazilian regions. This study aimed to understand the spatiotemporal dissemination dynamics of Delta in Brazil. To this end, we employed a combination of maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian methods to reconstruct the evolutionary relationship of 2,264 VOC Delta complete genomes (482 from this study) recovered across 21 of the 27 Brazilian federal units. Our phylogeographic analyses identified three major transmission clusters of Delta in Brazil. The clade BR-I ( n  = 1,560) arose in Rio de Janeiro in late April 2021 and was the major cluster behind the dissemination of the VOC Delta in the southeastern, northeastern, northern, and central-western regions. The AY.101 lineage ( n  = 207) that arose in the Paraná state in late April 2021 and aggregated the largest fraction of sampled genomes from the southern region. Lastly, the AY.46.3 lineage emerged in Brazil in the São Paulo state in early June 2021 and remained mostly restricted to this state. In the rapid turnover of viral variants characteristic of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Brazilian regions seem to occupy different stages of an increasing prevalence of the VOC Delta in their epidemic profiles. This process demands continuous genomic and epidemiological surveillance toward identifying and mitigating new introductions, limiting their dissemination, and preventing the establishment of more significant outbreaks in a population already heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. IMPORTANCE Amid the SARS-CoV-2 continuously changing epidemic profile, this study details the space-time dynamics of the emergence of the Delta lineage across Brazilian territories, pointing out its multiple introductions in the country and its most prevalent sublineages. Some of these sublineages have their emergence, alongside their genomic composition and geographic distribution, detailed here for the first time. A special focus is given to the emergence process of Delta outside the country’s south and southeast regions, the most populated and subjects of most published SARS-CoV-2 studies in Brazil. In summary, the study allows a better comprehension of the evolution process of a SARS-CoV-2 lineage that would be associated with a significant recrudescence of the pandemic in Brazil.

Abstract: The determination of salinity values from SI traceable densimetry and refractometry measurement results enable SI traceability of the former. In this work, a short study of the metrological compatibility of salinity determinations via these two methods for sodium chloride in ultrapure water solutions and two different standard seawaters (OSIL and ERM) solutions, in the [35.0; 215.0] g kg −1 interval, is presented. It evidenced the metrological compatibility of the salinity determinations in the referred interval. The largest salinity values enabled to test the matrix effect upon the determinations and concluded the preferable use of densimetry technique, when occurring.

Abstract: Hesperidin (hesperitin‐7‐O‐rutinoside) and hesperitin (hesperitin‐7‐O‐glucoside) show anti‐inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticarcinogenic effects and prevent bone loss. However, hesperidin has a low bioavailability compared to hesperitin due to the rutinoside moiety attached to the flavonoid. The removal of the rhamnose group to yield the corresponding flavonoid glucoside (hesperetin‐7‐glucoside) improved the bioavailability of the aglycone, hesperetin, in humans. In line with these assumptions, the aim of this work was the enzymatic production of hesperitin from hesperidin with hesperidinase. Despite the low hesperidin solubility in the reaction medium, the enzymatic bioconversion was carried with hesperidin soluble at lower concentrations (≤0.05 mg ml −1 ) and insoluble for high concentrations ( 〉 0.1–50 mg ml −1 ). A twofold increase in maximum reaction rates overtook the expected values, pointing to the enzyme ability to degrade insoluble hesperidin. To improve the bioprocess, hesperidinase was tested soluble and immobilized in calcium alginate (2%), k ‐carrageenan (2%), and chitosan (2%) beads. The immobilization was carried out by adsorption and encapsulation. Chitosan was cross‐linked with glutaraldehyde (1% and 2%) and sodium sulfate (13.5% and 15%) in acetate buffer (0.02 M, pH 4.0). The relation between bioprocessing conditions and hesperidinase stability was studied. A residual activity of 193% was obtained with immobilized hesperidinase compared to the soluble form. A half‐life of 770 min was attained with hesperidinase encapsulated in calcium alginate beads. The results presented in this work highlight the potential of hesperidinase encapsulation towards hesperitin production with insoluble substrate. To our knowledge, this work presents for the first time the potential of hesperidinase encapsulation on hydrogels for hesperitin production. This is an important achievement for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications of hesperitin because this compound presents a higher bioavailability compared to hesperidin. Abstract: There are countless causes that lead a baby to be born premature: placental changes (placenta previa and premature detachment), excess amniotic fluid, maternal age (mothers under 18 years of age), maternal infections, primacy, use of alcohol and drugs. The premature baby's trajectory begins with hospitalization, usually for long periods in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), due to pulmonary immaturity and the need for prolonged ventilatory support. Gastric probing by oral or nasal route is an essential procedure in assisting nutrition for newborns up to thirty-four weeks of gestational age, as it does not have fully developed sucking and swallowing reflexes. The literature describes several oral changes present in premature and low birth weight children, highlighting an increase in the incidence of enamel defects, such as hypoplasia and hypomineralization, an increase in the incidence of dental caries, developmental and eruption delay of the primary dentition, dental and palate malformation. The aim was to report the clinical case of a premature infant with chronic use of an orogastric tube (OT) with lesion in the middle region of the upper lip and gum pad. After 24 hours of repositioning the OT, can be observed the lesion regression. Thus, the presence of the dentist in the NICUs, assisting with protocol and diagnostic measures, can minimize deleterious effects on the oral cavity. It should be noted that the training and applicability of dental protocols in NICUs improves safety in the care of the newborn.

Abstract: Adverse event descriptions such as rare thromboses with concomitant thrombocytopenia, including venous thromboses at unusual sites such as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), intestinal venous and arterial thromboses, have been reported following vaccination for COVID-19 based on recombinant adenoviral vector. The emergence of clinical features of moderate to severe thrombocytopenia and thrombotic complications, increasing fibrin formation in different parts of the body, approximately 1 to 2 weeks after vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 suggests a disorder that clinically resembles clinical presentations of long-term use of heparin. The case report consists of paroxysmal left-sided hemicrania after local vaccination protocol, in addition, the patient presents areas of retraction and papillary necrosis, hyperplastic regions with bleeding, not consistent with periodontal diseases associated with biofilm, during the physical examination. The possibility of ischemic stroke in vaccinated people as well as in patients with COVID-19 justifies the therapeutic and prophylactic use of anticoagulants, increasing post-vaccination safety. Although the phenomena related to thromboembolic complications induced by the vaccine for COVID-19 are rare, a careful evaluation including specific laboratory tests and a correct systemic diagnosis is necessary. In addition, the observation of certain pathologies caused by thrombus formation in the oral cavity can help in the preventive identification of vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT).
