Abstract: Background: Colostrum is the first product of lactation and can be considered as first vaccine for newborns. It contains numerous nutrients as well as antioxidant vitamins necessary for newborns. Objective: The aim of the study was to measure the antioxidant vitamin (vitamins E and C) contents in colostrum and to compare them with the nutritional status, age and parity of the lactating mothers and birth weight of the babies. Materials and method: In this cross sectional study antioxidant vitamins E and C of colostrum of seventy six post-partum mothers were estimated irrespective of their age, parity, socioeconomic and nutritional status. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was employed to analyze the colostral content of vitamin E and spectrophotometric method was used for estimation of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) level. These levels were then compared against maternal and fetal characteristics. Results: The mean concentration (±SD) of vitamin E and C were 519.809(±1.16) ?gm/dl and 1.33(±0.076) mg/dl respectively. No significant relationship was found between maternal age, parity, BMI or birth weight of the baby and the colostral content of vitamin E and C. Conclusion: Colostrum of Bangladeshi women are rich in antioxidant vitamins and not dependent on sociodemographic variables of mothers and / or birth weight of baby. Abstract: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh, from July 2018 to June 2019, to compare serum vitamin D levels and observe its correlation with serum calcium levels among the outdoor and indoor working professionals. A total of 101 indoor and outdoor workers of different sectors living in Dhaka city participated in this study. All study subjects were divided into two groups: outdoor workers were in group A (n=35) and indoor workers were in group B (n=66). Estimation of serum vitamin D3 was done by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay, while serum calcium was measured using Arsenazo-III dye method. The mean age of the study participants was 38.72±6.88 years, ranging between 25 and 52 years. Among the study participants, 64(63.4%) were male and 37(36.6%) were female. Among outdoor workers, most were from Traffic Police Services (83%) and the rest were street hawkers (17%). Indoor workers were recruited from the hospital – nurses (32%), doctors (27%), administrative employees (21%), hospital ward assistants (12%) and medical technicians (8%). Serum vitamin D3 level was found higher in outdoor workers than that of indoor workers (19.35±5.67 ng/ml vs. 14.17±4.18 ng/ml) and the difference was statistically significant (P 〈 0.001). Serum calcium level was lower in outdoor workers than that of indoor workers (8.82±0.54 mg/dl vs. 9.08±1.08 mg/dl); however, the difference was not statistically significant (P 〉 0.05). Moreover, no significant correlation was observed between serum vitamin D and calcium levels in both outdoor (r= – 0.117; P=0.510) and indoor (r= – 0.163; P=0.196) groups. Abstract: Preeclampsia is one of the most leading causes of maternal mortality in developing countries like Bangladesh. Several studies have demonstrated the relationship between platelets count and preeclampsia. The aim of the study was to assess the association of platelets count with preeclampsia. A case control study was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka from July 2010 to June 2011. A total number of 100 pregnant women in third trimester of pregnancy attending in Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department of Dhaka Medical Hospital were selected as study subjects. Among them 50 diagnosed cases of preeclampsia were selected as cases and 50 normal healthy pregnant women as controls. Platelet count was measured in all study subjects. The mean platelet count in cases and controls were 1,44,260±96,472 and 1,98,100±51,219 respectively. The present study showed significant difference of mean platelet count between cases and controls. The study revealed that low platelets count is associated with preeclampsias. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jdnmch.v18i2.16018 J. Dhaka National Med. Coll. Hos. 2012; 18 (02): 24-26

Abstract: Introduction: Lecture is an important method of instruction through which the undergraduate medical students acquire knowledge, experience, skill and attitude. There are however, serious questions regarding the effectiveness of the traditional lecture approach. Yet, it is agreed upon that this can be more effective by making this approach methodical and more interactive. Objectives: This study was conducted to assess medical teachers skills in instructional events in their lecture classes.Materials and Methods: A descriptive, crosssectional study was conducted from July 2013 to June 2014 at conveniently selected six medical colleges of the country. At those selected institutions 30 lecture classes were observed and views of 1500 students were collected. A checklist with rating scale having rubric was used by the researchers to record the necessary observations while attending the lectures covering 8 instructional events. Out of 30 lecture classes, 13 were of preclinical subjects and 17 were of paraclinical area. Views of 1500 students were collected on a self administered structured questionnaire just after attending observed classes, covering 11 areas of performance. Out of them 732 were preclinical students and 768 were paraclinical students. Results: In this study, majority of the respondents (67%) agreed that the teachers successfully gained attention. In mentioning objective, the observer marked more than half (53.3%) of the teachers as unsatisfactory. The mean score of observers opinion in mentioning objective was 0.97±1.35. More than one fourth (23.55%) of the student respondents did not agree that the teachers stimulated prior knowledge in the lecture class. More than one fourth (26.15%) of the respondents did not agree that necessary feedback were taken by the teachers. Forty two percent of the respondents did not agree that the teachers provided a good summary at the end. More than one fourth of the respondents (26.85%) did not agree that the lecture was interesting. In this study, some of the key performances of the teachers like mentioning objective of the lesson, providing summary, legibility of teaching aids were scored less than 2, indicating that those were the problem areas and should be emphasized more. In this regards, continued medical education/continued professional developmental program of medical colleges should be valued and exercised properly. Conclusion: Effectiveness of a lecture largely depends on the knowledge of the teachers in teaching methodologies, their individual skills in presentation and their ability in classroom management. This study revealed that the teachers of medical colleges had been missing some important characteristics of effective lecture.Journal of Armed Forces Medical College Bangladesh Vol.11(1) 2015: 19-24

Abstract: Multiple choice questions (MCQs) have considerable role in the preclinical medical assessment, both formative as well as summative. This cross sectional descriptive study was conducted to observe the quality of MC items (completion type) of anatomy, biochemistry and physiology used in preclinical undergraduate medical examinations of 2012 and 2013 of a public university of Bangladesh. Each MC item had a stem and 5 options, and 1200 options were analyzed for difficulty and discrimination indices. Total 556 options were false statements (distracters) and were analyzed to observe their effectiveness as distracter. The study revealed that 18.67% of options were with appropriate difficulty (0.660.80). Highest frequency (43.5%) of difficulty indices was in easy class interval (0.911). Over all frequencies of items of three subjects in the ascending order were difficult, appropriate, marginal and easy as per their difficulty indices. Satisfactory or better discrimination indices (=0.20) were observed in 29.33% options. The mean difficulty and discrimination indices observed were respectively 0.82±0.18 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.81 to 0.83) and 0.13±0.14 (95% CI 0.122 to 0.138). Out of the options, 6.75% had negative discrimination indices. Items with difficulty index around 0.60 had maximum discriminatory power (up to 0.68) and more difficult as well as easy items had less discriminatory ability. Out of the distracters 83.45% were observed effective and the mean effectiveness was 22.3±18.7% (95% CI 20.75% to 23.85%). The study recommended using the method and findings to improve the quality of the items leading to development of a standard Question Bank.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Education Vol.7(1) 2016: 2-7

Abstract: Background: Following menopause there are changes in values of lipid profile parameters. Abdominal obesity has also been linked to significant metabolic abnormalities including changes in lipid parameter values. Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) calculated as log (TG/HDL-C) has been used as some practitioners as a significant predictor of atherosclerosis. So, we designed this study to observe the pattern of lipid profile parameters and to find out AIP in postmenopausal central obese women and to compare these between postmenopausal women with central obesity and postmenopausal nonobese women. Objectives: To assess the lipid profile status and AIP of postmenopausal women with central obesity and to compare these parameters with that of postmenopausal nonobese women.Materials & Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out in the department of Biochemistry, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Sixty six postmenopausal women with central obesity and age matched 56 nonobese postmenopausal women were included in the study. Central obesity was defined having waist hip ratio more than 0.8 and BMI 〈 25.0. All statistical analyses were done by SPSS 18.0. p values 〈 0.05 were considered significant. Results: Statistically no significant difference was observed between the central obese women and nonobese women in lipid profile parameters. But AIP was found significantly higher in postmenopausal central obese women. Conclusion: Central obese postmenopausal women may be at higher risk of cardiovascular events compared with postmenopausal nonobese women in spite of no difference in lipid profile parameters as their AIP values are significantly different.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/cmoshmcj.v13i2.21064
