Abstract:
Hydatid disease is a parasitic infestation caused by Echinococcus granulosus larvae. It is endemic in subtropical and tropical regions, such as the Mediterranean, the Middle East, South America, Africa and Australia. The liver and lungs are the most often affected organes. Cardiac involvement is very uncommon. We report a case of a 60-year-old patient with cardiac hydatid cyst that presented as acute cardiac tamponade. The patient subsequently underwent pericystectomy through median sternotomy under cardiopulmonary bypass. The postoperative course was uneventful. The patient received postoperative albendazole treatment with favorable clinical course.
