Abstract:
Residents play a significant role in shaping successful tourism development. In that point, several scholars have focused on the monetary relationships (perceived positive economic impacts, personal economic benefits, etc.) while others emphasized the intimate relationships (attachment, feelings, solidarity, etc.) to determine residents’ attitudes toward tourism. However, there is still a need to examine the predictors of residents’ intention to support tourism developments. Hence, this study fills out the gap by combining intimate relations with monetary ones to predict intentional support for tourism developments by using three different frameworks: community attachment, emotional solidarity, and social exchange. This study used the structural equation modelling. While results indicate that the community attachment wasn’t a significant predictor of perceived positive impacts, the emotional solidarity significantly predicted both the perceived positive impacts and the attitudinal support for tourism development. Finally, the emotional solidarity in tandem with the attitudinal support for tourism development and the community attachment significantly explained the intention to support tourism developments. In applying our findings the tourism authorities can organize more events related to tourism, that increase solidarity between residents and tourists, to gain residents’ support for tourism developments. The implications, limitations, and future research suggestions are presented in detail at the close of the paper.
