Abstract: Stocking of filter-feeding fish (mainly Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Aristichthys nobilis ) is a common method used in lakes and reservoirs in (sub)tropical China to control phytoplankton, but the results are ambiguous and lack long-term data to support. We analysed a decade (2010-2020) of monitoring data from a subtropical plateau reservoir, southwest China, to which filter-feeding fish were stocked annually. We found that the total phytoplankton biomass, cyanobacteria biomass and average individual mass of phytoplankton decreased significantly during the study period despite absence of nutrient concentration reduction. However, the grazing pressure of zooplankton on phytoplankton also decreased markedly as judged from changes in the ratio of zooplankton biomass to phytoplankton biomass and Daphnia proportion of total zooplankton biomass. This is likely a response to increasing predation on zooplankton by the stocked fish. Our results also indicated that water temperature, total phosphorus and water level promoted phytoplankton growth. Our results revealed that filter-feeding fish contributed to the decline in the biomass of phytoplankton but that it also had a strong negative effect on the grazing pressure of zooplankton on phytoplankton, even in this deep reservoir where zooplankton may have a better chance of survival through vertical migration. The particular strong effect on zooplankton is most likely due to imbalance of stocking and harvesting of fish. In the management of eutrophic reservoirs, the reduction of external nutrient loading should have highest priority. In highland (low temperature) deep-water eutrophic reservoirs, stocking of filter-feeding fish may help to control filamentous phytoplankton provided that the fish stocking is properly managed. The optimal stocking intensity of filter-feeding fish that can help control phytoplankton in such reservoirs without excessive impact on large-bodied zooplankton is a topic for further elucidation, however.

Abstract: Tandem solar cells are promising for overcoming the theoretical single junction solar cell efficiency limit. Here we report an elegant approach to monolithically integrate perovskites and Si-heterojunction tandem solar cells using an ultra-thin indium tin oxide (ITO) interlayer. It is found that a 1.7 nm ITO interlayer is sufficient to provide the interfacing between the silicon and perovskite subcells with minimum parasitic resistance and efficient trap states for carrier recombination. Thinner ITO interlayers result in discontinuous films while thicker ITO interlayers with improved lateral conductivity are less effective in localising shunts especially for large (≥1 cm 2 ) area tandem cells. Furthermore, it is found that a tandem cell with a 26 nm thick 〈p〉a-Si:H junction in the bottom cell performs better than that with a 13 nm thick junction. When combined with a 1.7 nm ultra-thin ITO layer and a front anti-reflection coating, our champion 1.0 cm 2 cell achieved 27.2% power conversion efficiency (PCE) and a fill factor (FF) of 82.4% under reverse scan. This FF is the highest of any perovskite–Si tandem cell. The ultra-thin ITO layer is suitable for large area cells. 24.2% efficiency was demonstrated on an 11.8 cm 2 cell. A 21.1% efficient 65.1 cm 2 (∼4 inch round) cell was also fabricated. This representative cell shows negligible efficiency loss after 600 hours of continuous 1 sun illumination under MPP tracking. This work provides insights into the role of ultra-thin interfacing ITO layers for monolithic large-area perovskite–Si tandem cells.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tofacitinib for the treatment of anti–melanoma differentiation–associated 5 gene (anti-MDA5) antibody–positive dermatomyositis (DM). Methods This study included 52 patients with anti-MDA5 antibody–positive DM (MDA5 + DM) who were treated with tofacitinib and followed up. Clinical and laboratory data of these patients were recorded between January 2019 and June 2022. SPSS was used for all statistical analyses. Results The mean age of patients with MDA5 + DM was 45 ± 12.4 years, and the median disease duration was 6.5 months (range, 3–13 months). The mean dosage of glucocorticoids was 34.7 ± 20.9 mg/d at the initiation of tofacitinib therapy. Overall, 47 patients were followed up for a mean duration of 7.8 ± 6.2 months. We found that the clinical symptoms of 28 patients (59.6%) were improved, but 1 patient (2.1%) died because of severe infection. Moreover, complications occurred in 25 patients (53.2%), among whom 19 patients had infections. Older age and C-reactive protein levels close to the upper value in reference range at the initial treatment were found to be the potential risk factors of infection. Furthermore, patients with cutaneous ulcers were found to have a lower risk of infection. Conclusion Tofacitinib can be used as a potential therapeutic option for MDA5 + DM. The occurrence of infection requires special attention during treatment, particularly in patients with older age and C-reactive protein levels close to the upper value in reference range.

Abstract: Fusarium wilt of banana is one of the most destructive diseases in banana-growing regions worldwide. Soil-borne diseases and soil microbial communities are closely related. The screening of antagonistic bacteria from soil microorganisms in areas with Fusarium wilt of banana is of great practical significance for controlling this disease. Results A strain designated FS-4 was isolated from healthy banana rhizosphere soil in an area affected by Fusarium wilt. This strain exhibited a significant antagonistic effect on the pathogen. Pot experiments revealed that the fermentation broth of strain FS-4 not only decreased the incidence of banana Fusarium wilt, but also promoted the growth of banana seedlings. The strain was identified as Streptomyces ma. by its morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The culture and fermentation conditions for this strain were optimized by single-factor and response surface experiments. The optimum culture conditions for Streptomyces ma . FS-4 were as follows: peptone 0.5%, saccharose 2.4, 0.05% K 2 HPO 4 , 0.05% MgCl 2 , and 0.05% NaCl at an initial pH of 7.0; 180 g at 28 °C; and inoculation size of 6% for 62 h. The diameter of bacteriostasis circle for Bacillus subtilis reached 26.7 mm. Conclusion Streptomyces ma . FS-4 is an important microbial resource as a biological agent for the control of plant pathogenic fungi and can be used to promote banana growth.

Abstract: Frailty is a natural consequence of the aging process. With the increasing aging population in Mainland China, the quality of life and end-of-life care for frail older people need to be taken into consideration. Advance Care Planning has also been used worldwide in long-term facilities, hospitals and communities to improve the quality of end-of-life care, increase patient and family satisfaction, and reduce healthcare costs and hospital admissions in Western countries. However, it has not been practiced in China. Research objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a modified Advance Care Planning intervention in certainty of end-of-life care, preferences for end-of-life care, quality of life concerns, and healthcare utilization among frail older people. Research design: This study used a quasi-experimental design, with a single-blind, control group, pretest and repeated posttest approach. Participants and research context: A convenience sample of 74 participates met the eligibility criteria in each nursing home. A total of 148 frail older people were recruited in two nursing homes in Zhejiang Province, China. Ethical considerations: The study received ethical approval from the Clinical Research Ethics Committee, the Faculty of Medicine, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, CREC Ref. No: 2016.059. Findings: The results indicated the Advance Care Planning programme was effective at increasing autonomy in decision making on end-of-life care issues, decreasing decision-making conflicts over end-of-life care issues, and increasing their expression about end-of-life care. Discussion: This study promoted the participants’ autonomy and broke through the inherent custom of avoiding talking about death in China. Conclusion: The modified Advance Care Planning intervention is effective and recommended to support the frail older people in their end-of-life care decision in Chinese society.

Abstract: Differences in individual personality are common amongst animals, which can play an ecological and evolutionary role given links to fitness. Personality affects animal life processes and outputs (e.g., behavior, life history, growth, survival, reproduction), and has become a common theme in animal behavioral ecology research. In the present study, we used Siberian Sturgeon to explore how personality traits of boldness and shyness are related to swimming performance, post exercise recovery and phenotypic morphology. Firstly, our results indicated that the Siberian sturgeon juveniles of shyness were better swimmers, validating evolutionary biology trade-off theory. The critical swimming speed (U crit ) of the shy groups was higher than that of the bold groups. Secondly, the shy groups were more resilient after exercise fatigue. The swimming fatigue recovery ability, the glucose and lactic acid concentration recovery ability of shy groups were greater than that of bold groups. Thirdly, the shy groups were more streamlined. Compared with bold groups, shy groups had smaller caudate stalk lengths, caudate stalk heights, superior caudal lobes, and inferior caudal lobes. In general, we demonstrated that shy Siberian sturgeon had better swimming performance from physiology and morphology. These research results further enrich the theoretical viewpoints of fish behavior biology, more importantly, which provided a good example for studying the relationship between sturgeon’s “personality” and swimming performance.
