Abstract:
Este artículo examina el impacto de la obra del historiador romántico Estanislao de Kostka Vayo, Historia de la vida y reinado de Fernando VII de España (1842), en la novela La Fontana de Oro (1870) y la segunda serie de Episodios nacionales (1875-1879), de Benito Pérez Galdós. Mi análisis se centra en las diferentes formas de representación textual de Fernando VII a las que recurren los autores: retrato físico (prosopografía), retrato moral (etopeya) y actuación política desde 1814 a 1833. El que ambos compartieran un mismo ideario, el liberalismo moderado, explica que su visión del monarca –y del absolutismo en general– fuera muy negativa. Sin embargo, el subtexto de las obras varía notablemente: mientras que Vayo dejaba entrever su optimismo ante la inminente subida al trono de Isabel II, la preocupación de Galdós por el futuro de la Revolución de 1868 se convertía en profunda desilusión tras el fracaso de la misma.
