    Abstract: The Špraněk NNR, as a prominent part of the Javoříčko Karst, has long been a focus of malacological research. In this study, we have assembled all the information on the mollusc fauna regarding this area by compiling literature data, records from the Natural History Museum in Prague, and data from our own field research. Since the end of the 19th century, 86 species of molluscs have been recorded. The malacofauna is dominated by preserved forest communities with a significant proportion of xerophilous and calciphilous species. The three most represented ecological groups are strictly forest (31%), woodland (15%), and euryvalent (15%) species. European and Central European species comprise the largest portion of the species composition, but a significant component is also represented by Alpine and Carpathian species, as the area lies on the border between the Bohemian Massif and the Carpathians. Despite its small area, the Špraněk NNR hosts a rich mollusc community of both conservation and zoogeographical value.

    Abstract: The U Výpustku Nature Reserve is located in the central part of the Moravian Karst PLA near the Křtiny Town. The reserve is predominantly forested area with multitude of karst features, such as caves and sinkholes. The valley was shaped in devonian limestones by the Křtinský potok Brook during the Quaternary. In total, 73 species of terrestrial gastropods were recorded (43% of the 171 species occurring in the Czech Republic), seven of which are included in the Red List of threatened species in the Czech Republic and 13 were newly recorded for the area. The majority of the recorded species (43; 59%) are forest dwellers, followed by euryvalent species (13; 18%). The proportion of open-country species is lower: sun-lit rock and steppe (5; 7%), silviphobic (3; 4%), dry-habitat (2; 3%), hygrophilous (4; 6%) and wetland (2; 3%). Among the recorded taxa, there are several rare and sensitive species reflecting the well-preserved state and biological value of the studied area, e.g. Daudebardia brevipes (VU), Ruthenica filograna, Truncatellina claustralis (VU), Chondrina arcadica clienta (NT) and Granaria frumentum (NT). Synanthropic (Arion distinctus, Deroceras reticulatum) and invasive (Arion vulgaris) species were recorded for the first time in the reserve, suggesting their current spread.

    Abstract: Pyramidula saxatilis and P. pusilla are two Central European rock-dwelling snail species that frequently co-occur and show substantial overlap in overall shell morphology. The two species can be separated from each other by differences in mitochondrial and nuclear DNA (mtDNA and nDNA) sequences. Recent studies have not shown consistent differences between these species in shell shape but have suggested possible species-specific features in shell microstructure. We investigated this issue by studying variation in the microsculpture of the upper shell surface (based on five shells per population from a total of nine populations for each species) and by analysing the geometric morphometrics of shell shape (based on 51 individuals and 12 populations of P. saxatilis and 54 individuals and 14 populations of P. pusilla), with species identifications based on mtDNA and nDNA markers. While geometric morphometrics and canonical variance analysis did reveal some statistical differences in overall shell shape, these differences were too subtle to be consistently detected by the eye. However, the density and development of growth ridges on the upper shell surface of the two species were found to be statistically different, with P. saxatilis having denser and very regular ridges. As a final verification of the utility of shell miscrosculpture, we were able to separate these two species even in two mixed populations with highly overlapping shell phenotypes, the shell-based identifications being confirmed by cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequence data for all of the collected individuals. We therefore recommend using shell microsculpture to distinguish these two species.

    Abstract: The Poledňana Nature Reserve is located in the northeastern part of the Beskydy PLA, close to Staré Hamry town. The subject of protection are old growth forests with natural-like tree composition. During the survey in 2021, 43 species (42 terrestrial and one aquatic) of gastropods were recorded. The species composition consists predominantly of woodland dwellers (28 spp.; 65%) followed by eurytopic (5; 12%), hygrophilous woodland dwellers (4; 12%), hygrophilous (3; 7%), strongly hygrophilous (1; 2%) and one (2%) aquatic species. Endangered Bulgarica cana, indicating high conservation value of local forest fragment, vulnerable Daudebardia brevipes, Eucobresia nivalis, Vitrea transsylvanica, nearly threatened Bielzia coerulans, Bythinella austriaca and Vestia turgida are species of conservation importance. There is need to preserve non-interventional regime in the most valuable parts to retain and to establish favorable habitat conservation status. The tree composition in spruce-dominated areas should be gradually changed towards natural composition.

    Abstract: The Kalábová (K1) and Kalábová 2 (K2) Nature Monuments are located in the central part of the White Carpathians PLA near the village of Březová. Both monuments protect treeless wet grasslands and tufa forming spring fens, which were originally part of a larger wetland complex. A total of 51 species were recorded in K1 (47 terrestrial and two aquatic gastropods and two bivalves). Of these, 30 species (56%) are woodland dwellers that were recorded during the survey in 2000, shortly after the area was logged. In contrast, none of these species was detected during the recent survey in 2021. However, these species are widespread in the region and Nature Monuments surroundings and some are likely present also in the ecotones of the spring meadow and adjacent forest. Currently, hygrophilous and wetland dwellers dominate (9 spp.; 17%), followed by ubiquitous (7; 15%), open-ground (4; 8%) and aquatic species (4; 8%). At K2, 19 species were recorded, including 15 terrestrial and two aquatic gastropods, and two bivalves. The two most species-rich ecogroups were hygrophilous and wetland dwellers (5; 26%) and woodland dwellers (5; 26%), the latter were prevailing probably due to relatively recent deforestation between 2012–2014. Aquatic species were represented by four species (21%), followed by three ubiquitous (16%) and one open-ground (5%) species. The spring dweller Bythinella austriaca (NT) and the declining wetland umbrella species Vertigo angustior (VU; NATURA 2000) inhabited both localities in high densities. To maintain the favourable habitat conservation status of the reserves, the sites should be managed extensively by grazing or mowing.

    Abstract: Since the last comprehensive overview of the Czech and Slovak mollusc fauna, released in 2013, several records of species new for the countries or particular regions have appeared. In this paper, we summarize all such records and news collected in 2015–2019, including those affecting nomenclature and the national Check-lists made in 2013 and 2014. The rules for the selection of the records are: (i) the first record in Bohemia, Moravia or Slovakia, (ii) regionally important new records, (iii) records of species listed in NATURA 2000 and the national Red-lists as either critically endangered or endangered species, and (iv) currently spreading non-native species. New records are briefly commented and summarized for each species separately. Location data are published with all details in a supplementary table and are freely accessible.

    Abstract: This paper presents important faunistic records conducted in the Czech and Slovak Republics during 2021. In the Šumava Mts, South Bohemia, a hydrobiid snail of the genus Alzoniella was found. Monacha cantiana s. lato was genetically confirmed for the first time in the city of Bratislava, Slovakia. New sites of Cornu aspersum (Prague) and Tandonia kusceri (southern and central Slovakia) were confirmed. A new colony of the slug Limacus maculatus was found in SE Moravia. New records of several endangered species, e.g. Vertigo angustior, V. moulinsiana, Anisus septemgyratus, Gyraulus acronicus, G. rossmaessleri, Planorbis carinatus, Pisidium amnicum, P. globulare, P. moitessierianum, P. pseudosphaerium and P. tenuilineatum, are also presented.     Abstract: This paper presents important faunistic records including location data with all details conducted in the Czech and Slovak Republics during 2020. Four new non-native species, Arion intermedius, Ambigolimax valentianus, Clathrocaspia knipowitschii and Krynickillus melanocephalus, were recorded outdoors in Slovakia. Radix lagotis was genetically confirmed for the first time from several sites in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Corbicula fluminea, recorded in Moravia for the first time in 2018, was found in another river, ca 50 km far from the first occurrence. Cepaea nemoralis, recorded in Slovakia for the first time in 2015, seems to have started spreading. New sites of Cornu aspersum were noticed in Prague and Bratislava; for the first time it was also found in Brno. There are also new records of several endangered species, e.g. Vertigo moulinsiana, Pisidium hibernicum, P. globulare, and Pseudanodonta complanata, presented.

    Abstract: In 2022, four small-scale protected areas (SPA) within Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area were surveyed for terrestrial molluscs. All localities are floodplain forest fragments with oxbow lakes, pools and marshes in the Morava river catchment. The most species-rich SPA was Hvězda Natural Monument (NM), with 38 species recorded. The threatened species Cochlicopa nitens (Endangered), known from this area from previous surveys, was not recorded despite high sampling effort. This sensitive hygrophilous species disappeared probably due to droughts occurring in earlier years. However, other sensitive hygrophilous species such as Euconulus alderi (Nearly Threatened) and Vertigo antivertigo were recorded. The latter was also found in Plané loučky Nature Reserve (NR; 27 spp. in total) and Častava NM (19 spp. in total). Relatively common floodplain forest species Perforatella bidentata was recorded in Plané loučky NR and Hvězda NM; however, it was absent in Častava NM and Kurfürstovo rameno NM (20 spp. in total). The partial absence of this species and the complete absence of substantially declining floodplain species Pseudotrichia rubiginosa (Nearly Threatened) and other sensitive taxa indicate habitat degradation caused mainly by stream regulations and water level decrease and manipulation. The presence of invasive plant species known to decrease terrestrial mollusc species diversity and abundance are of the essence as well. Highly invasive species Arion vulgaris was the most abundant species in all of the surveyed SPAs, except for Hvězda NM, where it was present in lower numbers. Over some twenty years, this species spread from anthropogenic areas to natural habitats to become one of the most prominent features of floodplain biocoenoses in Litovelské Pomoraví and elsewhere. To improve the habitat conservation status, it is important to maintain favourable water level in streams and water bodies adjacent to SPAs, especially during the critical periods of summer droughts. Furthermore, it is advised to focus the management on neophyte extirpation.
