Abstract: The aim of this study was to search for morphological and hemodynamic changes in hepatic and splanchnic vasculature in alcoholic patients without the signs of hepatic damage and subtyped by Cloninger classification by means of sonography, and compare the subtypes among themselves and with nonalcoholic healthy subjects. Methods: Thirty alcohol dependent patients and 30 healthy subjects with no alcohol problem or hepatic impairment were included in the study. Patients were subtyped by Cloninger classification and all patients were evaluated by gray-scale and spectral Doppler ultrasound. The diameter of the portal vein, portal venous velocity, peak systolic and end diastolic velocities of hepatic and superior mesenteric arteries were assessed. RI, PI and systolic/diastolic velocity ratios were also calculated. Results: Portal vein diameter (PV diameter), portal vein cross sectional area (PV area), portal vein velocity (PV PSV), hepatic artery peak systolic velocity (HA PSV), hepatic artery end diastolic velocity (HA EDV), hepatic artery resistive index (HA RI), hepatic artery pulsatility index (HA PI), and systolic/diastolic velocity ratios (HA S/D), superior mesenteric artery peak systolic velocity (SMA PSV), superior mesenteric artery end diastolic velocity (SMA EDV), superior mesenteric artery resistive indices (SMA RI), pulsatility index (SMA PI), and systolic/diastolic velocity rates (SMA S/D) showed no significant difference among the groups ( P 〉 0.01). Although there is no significant difference in PV PSV, HA PSV, SMA PSV, SMA EDV values between the groups, mean values of Type II alcoholics is greater than other groups. Portal vein cross-sectional area was greater in alcoholic patients (Type I, II and III) compared to the control group ( P = 0.000). Portal vein velocity, hepatic artery peak systolic and end diastolic velocity, superior mesenteric artery peak systolic and end diastolic velocity were significantly greater in alcoholic patients than in the control group ( P 〈 0.001). No statistical difference was detected between other parameters evaluated. Conclusion: In alcohol dependent patients, some hemodynamic and morphologic changes occur in hepatic and splanchnic circulation, even before the signs of hepatic damage develop, which can be detected by means of Doppler and gray-scale sonography. But as there is no significant difference between the Doppler ultrasonographic findings among alcoholics subtyped by a Cloninger classification, which is a clinical classification, it suggests that psychiatric classification doesn't show any correlation with biological parameters, and because of this Cloninger classification a psychiatric classification cannot be considered as a characteristic determinative factor in the prognosis of hepatic disorder due to alcohol use. However, higher values of Type II alcoholics can be attributed to the longer alcohol intake of this subtype.

Abstract: Peripheral edema is characterized by interstitial fluid accumulation in the extravascular compartment. Use of psychotropic drugs can cause edema either directly or by causing systemic disease. We present a case of bilateral ankle edema reaching up to the middle of both legs in a 50-year-old female patient, which is considered to be a result of the use of mianserin 10 mg/day. Dramatic regression was observed in the patient's edema 15 days after the cessation of mianserin. This is the second case in the literature that demonstrated peripheral edema associated with mianserin. Clinicians need to know about the management of edema and edema associated with the use of antidepressants. [ Psychiatr Ann . 2022;52(5):213–216.]

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between illness perception, avoidance behavior, perception of obsession and personality traits in healthcare workers after the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods: An online survey was conducted with 652 healthcare professionals in May 2020 to assess their perceptions of obsession and related factors. Sociodemographic data form, COVID-19 Disease Perception Scale, COVID-19 Avoidance Attitudes Scale, Maudsley Obsessive Compulsive Questionnaire and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire were used in the study. Results: Significant predictors of COVID-19-related contagiousness perception were young age (β=-0.235, p 〈 0.001), low psychoticism (β=-0.091, p=0.018), and high cleansing obsessions (β=0.127, p=0.004). It has been found that individuals with high extroverted personality traits (β=0.123, p=0.002) and more intense ruminative thoughts (β=0.117, p=0.003) have more cognitive avoidance from COVID-19, and those in the young age group (β=-0.184, p 〈 0.001) with high education level (β=0.128, p=0.001) and intensive cleaning obsessions (β=0.090, p=0.030) have a behavioral avoidance attitude from COVID-19. Conclusion: In the course of the COVID 19 pandemic, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms may be a response to protecting yourself and others from the virus. Our data support the suggestion that public health advice during pandemics should include mental health campaigns aimed at reducing the psychological effects of pandemics.

Abstract: Objective: Although social networks offer a valuable opportunity to share the most up-to-date information and to assist in the management of the pandemic, they may also be associated with intensification of the societal concerns and fear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between perceptions of regarding the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), social media use and perceived stress in a community sample in Turkey. Methods: The target study population consisted of the healthcare workers of XXXX University and their close relatives/friends. Of the 1564 participants 375 were healthcare workers (24.0%), 481 were non-healthcare workers (30.8%), 297 were students (19.0%), 210 were unemployed subjects (13.4%), and 201 were retired (12.9%) individuals. For data collection sociodemographic form, Perception of COVID-19 (P-COVID-19), Perception of Causes of COVID-19 (PCa-COVID-19), Perception of Control of COVID-19 (PCo-COVID-19), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and Social Network Addiction Scale (SNAS). The scales used were compared among the five groups that made up the sample. Results: Perception of COVID-19 dangerousness and contagiousness was significantly lower in retirees (p=0.003, p 〈 0.001, respectively). "Macro control perception" regarding COVID-19, which evaluates whether countries or governments have taken adequate measures, was highest in healthcare workers (p 〈 0.001). In other words, compared to other groups, healthcare workers think that the measures were taken at a sufficient level. Students had the highest perception of controllability regarding COVID-19 (p 〈 0.001). In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between SNAS scores and COVID-19 dangerousness perception scores in all five groups (p 〈 0.05). Conclusion: Stress increases the perception of dangerousness associated with COVID-19. Social networks have a significant impact on these perceptions, and COVID-19 can have a variety of effects on individuals who make up the society.
