Abstract:
A one dimensional fluid model is developed for the deduction of cross-field viscosity and parallel flow velocity in magnetized flowing plasma. Analytic solutions are obtained for a free presheath with Dirichlet and/or Neumann boundary conditions. The Fluid model with mixed boundary conditions produces results closer to those using kinetic analysis. For the bounded presheath, the plasma density and flow velocity are derived using a Dirichlet boundary condition in terms of position along the field line, a flow Mach number ( M ∞ ), normalized shear viscosity (α) and the size of the bounded presheath. α and M ∞ are deduced by comparing the two measured ratio ( R s , R l ) with theoretical ratios of ion saturation current densities. R s is measured using a small Mach probe (SMP) which generates one bounded and one free presheath, and R l is measured using a large Mach probe (LMP) generating two free presheaths.
