Abstract: PURPOSES:to investigate the frequency of vestibular disorders in firefighters working in Alagoas and their complaints.METHODS:we performed otoneurologic interviews and audiological evaluation, discarding the sample subjects with abnormal results. The valid sample was underwent the maneuver Dix-Hallpike and vectoelectronystagmography. We used the Chi-square test and Fisher Exact test for statistical analysis, with significance level of 5% (p = 0.050).RESULTS:the sample consisted by 26 male (86.7%) and 4 female subjects (13.3%) with aged between 24 and 35 years. Of these, were found 43.4% results normal and 56.6% showed abnormalities in the caloric test, with a higher incidence of peripheral vestibular dysfunction followed by unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit dysfunction. There were no statistically significant differences in the presence of vestibular disorders or in the classification of these pathologies. Was perceived effective difference for dizziness between genders, with females more likely to present it. There was no statistically significant difference regarding dizziness between the age groups, with a tendency for older subjects present it more. There was no statistically significant relationship between vestibular disorder and complaints of dizziness, auditory manifestations or history of disease.CONCLUSIONS:there was a higher incidence of peripheral vestibular dysfunction followed by unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit dysfunction, without statistically significant difference between them. The examined firefighters complained of dizziness, auditory manifestations and pathological history, but without statistically significant relationship with vestibular disorders.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To analyze and compare the tympanometric gradient and the compliance obtained in probe tones of 226 and 1 kHz between groups of infants with and without gastroesophageal reflux (GER). METHODS: Participants were 118 full-term and preterm infants, from newborns to 6-month-olds - 63 with clinical diagnosis of physiological GER performed by pediatricians or gastroenterologists, and 55 without GER -, who were submitted to tympanometry with probe tones of 226 and 1 kHz. RESULTS: Higher compliance values were found with 1 kHz in both groups. Comparing the average compliance between groups, we observed that the group without reflux showed higher values. The mean value of the tympanometric gradient was higher in the group without reflux, when compared to the one with reflux. CONCLUSION: The 1 kHz probe tone has higher compliance in infants with and without GER, when compared to the 226 Hz probe tone. Infants with reflux have compliance within normal limits, although they present lower compliance than infants without reflux. Regarding the gradient, infants with GER have altered values and/or within normality limits in both ears.

Abstract: Noise is generally an unwanted sound or a sound that produces unpleasant effects and causes discomfort to the ears. Sound becomes undesirable when it interferes with normal activities such as sleeping, talking, or when it interrupts or decreases quality of life. Not every noise can be called pollution, especially if it doesn't happen regularly. Urban areas generally have more unpleasant acoustic frequencies to the ears than rural areas because they are a complex mix of transport noises, factories, industries, machinery, and people. Urban noise, when excessive and continuous, impairs the quality of life in cities. The problem of excess noise has increased due to the imbalance between urban development and the increase in motorized traffic on streets and highways, and therefore the to such noise generated by urban traffic has increased significantly and has been the main responsible for violations of noise patterns and the acoustic comfort of people. This case study work sees you as the main objective to evaluate and discuss noise levels in a very moving road and the repercussions caused by noise pollution. A linear stretch of a road of large circulation of vehicles was chosen for the study, for its variety of uses, such as commercial, residential and services. This route has been the subject of numerous complaints from people who live and/or work in it. After the result of sixteen measurements, at three different times and days, eight on each side of the chosen stretch of the road, it was found that noise levels are above the limits described by the current legislation related to acoustic comfort.

Abstract: PURPOSE: to compare the findings of TEOAE with tympanometry in 226 and 1000 Hz in infants. METHOD: the study was conducted in the Department of Otolaryngology, Hospital Santa Juliana Maceio - Alagoas. We selected infants of both genders, aged from newborn to six months. We excluded those with cleft palate, external and/or middle ear malformation, syndromes, and family history of hearing loss. The following procedures were conducted: anamnesis in order to identify hearing impairment and to select the sample according to the criteria of inclusion and exclusion; otorrinolaringological assessment using otoscopy and hearing evaluation that consisted of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and tympanometry with 226 and 1000Hz probe tones. In order to analyze the qualitative variables, we used the test for Equality of Two Proportions, and the Chi-Square for Independence and the confidence interval for the average used for the analysis of the results of quantitative variables. RESULTS: comparing the results of TEOAE with the tympanometry results that were obtained with 226Hz and 1000Hz probe tones, we observed an association of TEOAE with the 1000Hz probe for both ears, the infants with TEOAEs absence had altered tympanogram results and the ones where the TEOAEs were present had normal tympanograms. CONCLUSION: There was a higher correlation between the results of the 1000 Hz probe tympanometry and the TEOAE in order to identify normal ear responses and middle ear disorders.

Abstract: Since 1998, after we started the support group for neonatal hearing screening, many other hearing screening programs were held in Brazil. In Alagoas, the first program started in 2003, but none of its results were published. Hearing is paramount for human communication; therefore, childhood hearing loss can impair speech acquisition, emotional, educational and social development. AIM: to present the results achieved in a neonatal hearing screening program in Maceió. MATERIALS AND METHODS: a retrospective analytical study was carried out in order to study the results from tests carried out from September 2003 to December 2006 in a private hospital of Maceió. RESULTS: from a total of 2002 newborns, 1,626 fitted the inclusion criteria, 835 (51.4%) males. The hearing screening was considered appropriate in 1416 cases (87.1%), and the most frequently found age was between 16 and 30 days. Finally, 163 (10.0%) children presented risk indicators for hearing loss, and hyperbilirubinemia was the most common indicator. CONCLUSIONS: statistical results obtained from this hearing screening program show the importance of holding such programs. This study is important because it contributes to further regional or multinational studies.

Abstract: PURPOSES: to determine the occurrence of failures in the hearing screening in students and compare the results obtained in public schools with the particular ones. METHOD: 90 students enrolled in a public and private school took part in this study. The students were submitted to otoscopy and otoacoustic emissions, checking the influence of gender and education network as for the results of hearing screening. RESULTS: we observed that 62.2% of the students passed the hearing screening and 37.8% failed, and we observed higher failure rate among students from public schools. CONCLUSION: we may conclude that in the studied population, the occurrence of failed hearing screening in school is 37.8% and this was significantly higher in students from public schools.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: audiological findings and language in regurgitating twin. PROCEDURES: the study consists of the report concerning the Audiology findings and the speech development in regurgitating twin sisters. The following steps were accomplished for this study: gathering data in medical registers, patient medical reports and gathering family history. In the data medical registers, beyond the Audiology speech findings, we also found a boarding type of used therapeutic approach and the daily objective planning that guided the sessions. RESULTS: children showed absence of otoacoustic emissions caused by transient stimulation, distortion product, and evoked hearing potential of the brain stem by air and by bone conduction with bilaterally electrophysiological threshold in 30 and 35dBNA, and a light degree hearing loss was suggested in the findings. In this follow-up, they had episodes of secretary otitis media, confirmed by the otolaryngology evaluation and tympanometric curves as for type B and C. Children initiated the speech therapy with ten-months age. Thirty-two therapeutical sessions were accomplished for subject A.B., 28 for subject A.E., in a period of eleven months, in which the children demonstrated improvements as for the language phase of the speech development, however they were not compatible with the age observed in studied literature. CONCLUSION: the two children with gastroesophageal reflux showed conductive loss, floating hearing in the first two years of life and delay in speech development. Although their productions show delay, it was possible to observe significant improvement of the children in relation to the therapeutical speech process.
