Abstract: To assess the clinicopathological characteristics of a cohort of patients with oral leukoplakia (OL) managed in a Romanian dental hospital and to evaluate the risk of malignant transformation (MT). Materials and methods We conducted a hospital‐based retrospective study using the clinical charts of patients diagnosed with OL that had complete clinical and histopathological evaluation followed up for 1–16 years. Results From 120 included patients, 68 (56.7%) were females, and 71 (59.2%) were current smokers. The homogeneous form was present in 60% of cases; the buccal mucosa was the most frequently involved site. MT was observed in 9 cases, which was more common in females and in those with dysplastic leukoplakia. A significant statistical association was found between MT and dysplasia grade ( χ 2 test: p  = 0.007). MT occurred during a mean interval of time 75 months in both treated and non‐treated patients. Conclusions In this leukoplakia cohort, most of the lesions encountered were in smokers, clinically homogeneous and 62.5% proved histologically benign. But despite the clinically benign appearance of leukoplakia, tissue diagnosis of some cases was carcinoma. The results of the current study advocate the necessity for biopsy even in apparently homogeneous, clinically benign lesions. The malignization rate was 7.5%; two‐thirds were nonhomogeneous lesions.

Abstract: Purpose. The study aims to evaluate Romanian dentists’ knowledge of the methods used to assess dental implant stability. Materials and method. 192 dental practitioners who graduated from dental schools in Romania completed an online questionnaire designed to assess their level of knowledge regarding the methods used to assess the osseointegration of dental implants. Data collected from the participants was centralized in a database and statistically analysed. Results. The response rate was 100%, 55% of the participants being females and 45% males. The best-known method for assessing the stability of dental implants was radiological analysis and the main source of information was from university courses. Only 16% of the dentists who completed this survey practice oral implantology. However, the majority (60%) intends to practice implant dentistry in the future. Conclusions. Most of the dentists who took part in this study don’t have knowledge about the current methods used to assess the osseointegration of dental implants. More information about these methods can be gained by deepening one’s knowledge during college, promoting the reading of medical journals and attending medical conferences focused on oral implantology.

Abstract: Objectives. The aim of this study was the assessment of the exposure to fluoride through oral homecare products as well as professional applications for a group of children from Bucharest, Romania. Materials and methods. The cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 on a sample of 207 subjects from Bucharest, Romania, including parents with children between 1 and 12 years distributed in three age groups: 1-2 years, 3-5 years and 6-12 years. The assessment used a 10 items questionnaire, on-line and self-administered and completed by the parents most involved in child’s oral health. Results. The correct concentration of fluoride in child’s toothpaste was used as it follows 3.7% of 1-2 year-olds, 4.24% of 3-5 year-olds, 8.06% 6-12 year-olds. The age-adapted recommended quantity of toothpaste was used for 37.4% of children of 1-2 years, 61.86% of children of 3-5 years and 24.19% of children of 6-12 years. Twice-daily tooth brushing was performed by 40.74% 1-2 year-olds, 44.92% 3-5 year-olds, 62.90% 6-12 year-olds. In-office professional fluoridation was low, 88.89% of 1-2 years old children, 92.37% of 3-5 years old children and 77.42% 6-12 years old children were never exposed to such preventive procedures. Conclusions. Children from the present study had a suboptimal exposure to fluoride through oral home care products as well as to topical in-office professionally application of high concentration fluoride products.

Abstract: (1) Background: Parents need an increased level of awareness regarding the role of fluoride in maintaining optimal oral health of their children. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the level of parents’ knowledge and behavior towards fluoride administration in children. (2) Methods: an online self-administered Google Forms questionnaire was used. (3) Results: 73.97% did not administer fluoride products to their children. From 16 parents who have given their child local fluoride products, 15.06% made it on the recommendation of the dentist. In total, 71.23% did not know exactly the importance of using fluoride for optimal oral health of the child. In total, 63.01% did not know the possible side effects of excess fluoride. (4) Conclusions: The dentist has an important role to educate the parents and also their children on the appropriate use of fluoride at home and in dental offices, explaining to them the benefits it brings for optimal oral health status and to motivate patients for adequate oral hygiene, proper diet and regular check-ups.

Abstract: The stability of dental implants is a prerequisite for osseointegration. Osseointegration is the process that involves the formation of bone around the dental implant, resulting in increased stability and its integration in the organism. Therefore, successful osseointegration contributes to a functionally optimal treatment. There is a need for a clinical method capable of measurement of bone quality at the time and following implant placement, to measure the degree of osseointegration and the ability of the implants to distribute loads to the surrounding bone. Research to date focuses on finding an ideal method to assess the osseointegration of dental implants in order to improve and broaden the clinical indications of dental implant systems. This paper aims to supply information about current methods used to assess the osseointegration of dental implants. In this regard, a literature review was conducted. Full-text scientific articles relevant to the chosen topic, written in English or whose text could be accessed in English were included.

Abstract: Regular screenings at children population level are necessary in order to assess communities’ need for education, prevention, as well as early detection and intervention programs The study aims to assess dental caries experience and oral health-related behaviors among Romania children from the South and Central region. Methods The cross-sectional study conducted in 2019–2020 is part of the national survey “Romanian Oral Health Survey”, under the endorsement of the World Health Organization (WHO). The stratified, randomized and representative sample included 98 children of 12 years of age. The assessment included a clinical examination, using International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) and the Oral Health Questionnaire for Children recommended by the World Health Organization. Results Results revealed that the frequency of caries-free children among 12 year-olds was 36.7% and the mean DMFT was 2.89. Regarding the oral health-related habits, 38.8% of children brushed twice daily; the consumption of sugary foods multiple times per day has been frequently met and 11.2% at the age of 12 never visited the dental office. Conclusions The findings revealed that caries prevalence was high and behaviors negatively influence oral health. The presented data are of utmost importance for Romanian policy makers to promote oral health education among children, to support consistent preventive oral health campaigns and to stimulate dental attendance, irrespective of children’ living areas or gender.

Abstract: Although the aims of any public health coverage are prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and maintenance, dental services are hardly ever included in services. The goal of our pilot study is to assess the perspective of a group of adult patients on their covered dental treatments. The present cross-sectional study was conducted on 140 patients who reported their perception by filling in a questionnaire. All the collected data were statistically analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25. Most of the subjects (40.7%, n = 57) were treatment oriented, visiting the dentist only in an emergency situation. A total of 40.7% (n = 57) of the participants stated that all the dental treatments had coverage and 22.8% (n = 13) had to split their treatment plan because of the insurance budget limit. The subjects who had chosen covered dental services because they considered it was a right they should benefit from (53.7%, n = 22) and those who had chosen covered dental services because of financial reasons (29.3%, n = 12) were more frequently unsatisfied with the types of covered dental services. The reduced level of satisfaction was associated mainly with the list of dental procedures accepted for coverage and also with younger and highly educated patients. For a more accurate description, the present study should be completed by future studies not only on a representative population at national level, but also by assessing the perspective of dental professionals.

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of a school‐based experiential education programme on oral health status, knowledge and behaviour among a group of schoolchildren in Bucharest. Materials and methods The study was part of an Erasmus+ project that focused on oral health promotion in schools and covered a 2‐year period. Data were collected from 120 teenagers from three schools in Bucharest, Romania. At baseline, all subjects were clinically examined and received a questionnaire. They were split into two groups at baseline: a test group with 76 schoolchildren and a control group with 44 schoolchildren. The schoolchildren included in the test group received three experiential lessons. After every lesson, they filled in the same questionnaire. At the end, all subjects were clinically examined again. Results The prevalence of dental caries was increased in the control group by 8.58% (N = 3, P  = 0.31) and decreased in the test group by 1.64% (N = 1, P  = 0.8). Regarding incipient carious lesions, a higher decrease was observed in the test group (D 1‐2 S: 0.78 vs 0.63, P  = 0.867). There was a statistically significant plaque index decrease in the test group (1.32 vs 1.12; P  = 0.01) and an increase in the control group (1.15 vs 1.79; P  = 0.0001). More children from the test group (N = 5, 7.9%, P  = 0.225) adopted twice‐daily tooth brushing compared to the control group (N = 1, 2.9%, P  = 0.52). Conclusions In the group studied, the oral health programme had positive effects on oral health status, oral health knowledge and behaviour among adolescents.

Abstract: (1) Background: Parents play an important role in children’s oral health by contributing to the development of proper oral hygiene and eating behaviors as well as offering the child access to dental services. The aim of this study was the evaluation of parents’ involvement in their child’s visits to the dental office. (2) Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted in 2020 in Romania on a sample of 105 parents using an online self-administered questionnaire. (3) Results: Only 9.52% of parents brought their children to the dental office for their first visit in their 1st year of life; 51.53% of children visit the dentist at least once a year but for only 42.86% of children, the reason of their last visit was a regular dental check-up. (4) Conclusions: parents underestimate the role of dental service utilization for their children; the first visit to the dental office for most children is at an older age than optimal, the frequency of dental visits is less than recommended, and they are treatment-oriented.

Abstract: (1) Background: Dentistry is acknowledged as being particularly physically demanding, considering access difficulty and visibility of the operating field. The issue of posture is frequently discussed in the literature due to its significant contribution in the etiology of musculoskeletal disorders, but never enough to encourage all dentists to adopt safe, healthy working positions. (2) Methods: This article presents the arguments that justify the attention needed to be paid to the balanced posture recommended to dentists and goes further and outlines a logical model that could help in maintaining a balanced posture as much as possible during the therapeutic act. Describing the balanced posture alone has a limited practical utility, and thus we have detailed the aspects that involve the spatial relationship of the doctor with the patient sitting on the dental chair. (3) Results: An optimal working distance and postural symmetry are the main objectives to be considered, each of them being conditioned by several elements. These elements have been detailed throughout the article, always taking into account the realities of the daily practice, with its challenges and limitations. (4) Conclusions: A greater attention paid to maintaining the optimal working position provides doctors the chance to perform their activity in comfortable and safe conditions.
