Abstract: Carbon nanotube (CNT) characteristics, besides the processing conditions, can change significantly the microwave absorption behavior of CNT/polymer composites. In this study, we investigated the influence of three commercial multi-walled CNT materials with various diameters and length-to-diameter aspect ratios on the X-band microwave absorption of epoxy nanocomposites with CNT contents from 0.125 to 2 wt%, prepared by two dispersion methods, i.e. in solution with surfactant-aiding and via ball-milling. Results The laser diffraction particle size and TEM analysis showed that both methods produced good dispersions at the microscopic level of CNTs. Both a high aspect ratio resulting in nanotube alignment trend and good infiltration of the matrix in the individual nanotubes, which was indicated by high Brookfield viscosities at low CNT contents of CNT/epoxy dispersions, are important factors to achieve composites with high microwave absorption characteristics. The multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) with the largest aspect ratio resulted in composites with the best X-band microwave absorption performance, which is considerably better than that of reported pristine CNT/polymer composites with similar or lower thicknesses and CNT loadings below 4 wt%. Conclusions A high aspect ratio of CNTs resulting in microscopic alignment trend of nanotubes as well as a good level of micro-scale CNT dispersion resulting from good CNT-matrix interactions are crucial to obtain effective microwave absorption performance. This study demonstrated that effective radar absorbing MWCNT/epoxy nanocomposites having small matching thicknesses of 2–3 mm and very low filler contents of 0.25-0.5 wt%, with microwave energy absorption in the X-band region above 90% and maximum absorption peak values above 97%, could be obtained via simple processing methods, which is promising for mass production in industrial applications.

Abstract: In this research, we focus on development of a new configuration of magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) based clutch (MRC) featuring a tooth-shaped disc with multiple teeth acting as multiple magnetic poles of the clutch. The tooth-shaped disc is placed in a clutch housing composed of the left housing and the right housing. The inner face the housing also has tooth shaped features mating with the teeth of the disc through the working MRF. Excitation coils are placed directly on stationary winding cores placed on both side of the clutch housing. An air gap of 0.3 mm is left between the housing and the winding cores to ensure the housing can freely rotate against the winding cores. After the introductory part, configuration of the MRC is introduced and the transmitted torque of the MRC is derived. An optimization process to minimize the overall volume of the proposed clutch, which can generate a required maximum braking torque, is then conducted. The optimal results show that the overall volume of the proposed MRC is significantly reduced compared to a referenced conventional MRC (0.159 m3 vs. 0.295 m3). A prototype of the proposed MRC is fabricated for experimental works and good agreement between the experimental results and simulated ones is archived.

Abstract: In this research work, a novel disc-type configuration of magneto-rheological brake (MRB) with zigzag magnetic flux path is proposed. In this design, a rotor component consisting of several magnetic plates integrated in a disc made of non-magnetic material is implemented. A magnetic plate is separated with the others by nonmagnetic separators of the disc. Corresponding magnetic plates and separators are also implemented on the housing of the MRB. With this configuration, the magnetic flux line is forced to cross the MR fluid (MRF) duct from the disc to the housing at this separator and then from the housing to the disc at the next separator. This results in a zigzag magnetic flux path between the disc and the housing. The separators on each side of the housing are integrated on a bobbin, on which the magnetic coil is installed. When counter currents are applied to the coils on each side of the housing, a mutual magnetic field with zigzag flux lines across the MRF duct is generated. Based on the electromagnetic finite element and torque analysis, optimization problem considering the maximum achievable braking torque and the minimum mass of the MRB is performed. After that, optimal results of the MRB are obtained and compared with those of MRBs in previous works. Based on optimal results of the MRB with a maximum achievable braking torque of 20 Nm, an MRB prototype is fabricated and experimentally investigated to validate the simulation results.

Abstract: Water pollution with arsenic (As) and heavy metals has been a major considering issue because of their negative impact on ecosystems and human health. This study was conducted to evaluate the adsorption behavior of As and heavy metals by iron ore sludge modified by the addition of 10% sodium silicate solution and heating at 400°C (SBC2-400-10S) in both batches and fixed–bed column experiments. The kinetics showed that the removal of As and heavy metals by the adsorbent is a pseudo-second-order reaction. The adsorption data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm and provided Langmuir monolayer capacity (mg/g) of As and heavy metals in the following order: Pb (2.379) 〉 Cd (2.008) 〉 Zn (1.915) 〉 Mn (1.692) 〉 As (0.452). The column adsorption data were fairly well described by Thomas model, with the order of Thomas adsorption capacity following a similar trend as in the batch study. The results of this study indicated that SBC2-400-10S was a potential adsorbent for removal of As and heavy metals from solutions.

Abstract: Water pollution by heavy metals has currently been an increasing worldwide concern. This study was conducted to assess the removal efficiency of a treatment system using sorbent and common reed ( Phragmites australis ). Approximately 1400 g of sorbent that was modified from Ban Cuon iron mine drainage sludge by adding 10% sodium silicate solution and heating at 400 °C was put in a column of 1.8l. The initial concentrations of As and Cd in inflow water were 1.0 mg/l, those of Pb, Mn, and Zn were 6.0 mg/l. During 30 days of the laboratory experiment, aqueous solution of constant flow rate (50 l/day) was pumped through the sorbent column before flowing into surface and horizontal subsurface constructed wetlands using P. australis . The results showed that the removal efficiency of As, Cd, Mn, Pb and Zn by sorbent – surface constructed wetland were 83.0 – 89.5, 89.3 – 93.3, 69.7 – 98.0, 94.8 – 95.4, and 69.2 – 92.3%, respectively; those by sorbent – subsurface constructed wetland were 85.3 – 89.1, 98.5 – 98.7, 92.8 – 98.7, 95.5 – 96.0, and 93.1 – 96.2%. The concentrations of heavy metals in the outlet water met the National Technical Regulation on Industrial Wastewater of Vietnam (QCVN 40:2011–BTNMT) with the exception of As, which indicates the effectiveness of combined sorbent and P. australis for simultaneous removal of these metals from contaminated water.

Abstract: Arsenic (As) contaminated groundwater has been a major concern due to the negative impacts to exposed people. This research was conducted to assess and compare the removal efficiency of As from groundwater by laterite, sand, and ash. The experiment was carried out in 14 days in a household scale in Son Dong commune, Hoai Duc district, Ha Noi. Groundwater was pumped directly from a well and flowed through 20 cm (diameter) x 80 cm (length) columns. The initial As concentration in groundwater was 526 µg/L decreasing to an average of 189, 192 and 154 µg/L after being filtrated using sand, ash, and laterite, respectively. Average removal efficiency of sand, ash and laterite during the experiment was 63.3, 63.9, and 70.5%, respectively. Laterite had higher As removal efficiency may be due to higher content of goethite and kaolinite in this sorbent which resulted in better adsorption of As. The concentrations of As in the outflow water were higher than the allowable limit set by the national technical regulation on drinking water quality (QCVN 01:2009/BYT). Therefore, it requires higher volume of sorbents or additional treatment technologies for removal of As from groundwater.
