Abstract:
Auger intensity measurements from a series of U100−xMx(M=Fe,Co,Ni) metallic glasses confirms a predicted change in local order about the uranium atoms for alloy compositions near U72M28. As x increases, independent of M, more electrons are charge transferred out of the uranium local density of valence states (LDOVS). At the highest x value measured, U42Co58, more than half of the valence electrons in the uranium LDOVS have been lost. The 5d core level electron energy loss spectra suggest that for x≤28,6d valence states are involved in the charge transfer, while for x≥28, it is mostly the 5f states that are involved.
