Abstract: COVID-19 has speedily immersed the globe with 72+ million cases and 1.64 million deaths, in a span of around one year, disturbing and deteriorating almost every sphere of life. This study investigates how students in Pakistan have coped with the COVID-19. Zung’s self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) was used for measuring anxiety and the coping strategies were measured on four strategies i.e., seeking social support, humanitarian, acceptance, and mental disengagement. Among 494 respondents, 61% were females and 77.3% of the students were in the age group of 19–25 years. The study findings indicate that approximately 41 percent of students are experiencing some level of anxiety, including 16% with severe to extreme levels. Seeking social support seemed to be the least preferred coping strategy and that female students seek social support, humanitarian, and acceptance coping strategies more than males. Students used both emotion-based and problem-based coping strategies. The variables of gender, age, ethnicity, level and type of study, and living arrangement of the students were associated with usage of coping strategies. Findings showing that students do not prefer to seek social support. The study outcomes will provide basic data for university policies in Pakistan and the other countries with same cultural contexts to design and place better mental health provisions for students.

Abstract: Genetically diverse female lines of sunflower were crossed with male testers to get heterotic hybrids. Studies were carried-out during 2008-2010 at Experiment filed of Agriculture Research Institute, Tandojam, Sindh, Pakistan. Six female lines like T-4-0319, PAC-0505, HO-I, Hysun-33, Peshawar-93 and CMS-03 and three testers i.e., PAC-0306, PAC-64-A and SF-187 were crossed in a line ´ tester mating design, thus 18 F1 and F2 hybrids were developed for evaluation of heterosis and inbreeding depression for days to initial flowering, days to maturity, leaves/plant, plant height (cm), head diameter (cm), 1000-achene weight (g), seed yield kg/ha and oil yield kg/ha. The experiment was conducted in a randomised complete block design with four replications. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among parents, F1s and F2 hybrids for all the traits studied. The existence of significant genetic variability among the plant traits is particularly useful because variations in these traits would allow further improvement in sunflowerseed yield and oil traits. The F1 hybrids HO-I ´ PAC-0306 and HO-I PA ´ C-64-A exhibited desirable negative mid and better parent heterosis for days to initial flowering, days to maturity and plant height. These hybrids also manifested desirable positive heterotic effects for leaves/plant, head diameter, 1000-achenes weight, seed yield and oil yield. Inbreeding depression for phenological, seed yield and oil traits  showed that desirable high inbreeding depression was observed in hybrids HO-I ´ P´AC-64-A, HO-I ´ PAC-0306 and HO-I ´ SF-187 for days to initial flowering, similarly T-4-0319 ´ PAC-0306, PAC-0505 ´ SF-187 and HO-I ´ PAC-64-A explicated maximum but rewarding inbreeding depression for days to maturity. The F2 hybrids Hysun-33 ´ SF-187 and Peshawer-93 ´ PAC-64-A may be the most desirable ones in the sense that they recorded comparatively moderate inbreeding depression with enough number of leaves to be productive if F2 hybrids are to be exploited for hybrid vigour. Low inbreeding depression for various traitsindicated that such hybrids some how favour the usefulness of F2 hybrids in sunflower.

Abstract: Ovarian cancer is the most fatal gynecologic cancers and is an important source of cancer-related mortality, particularly in developed countries. Epidemiological studies have shown that the risk of ovarian cancer associated with body mass index obesity and overweight differs across different geographical distributions. Obesity and the possibility of ovarian cancer have been widely studied, but findings have yielded inconsistent results. The aim of this review study is to investigate the association of obesity, overweight and body mass index with ovarian cancer. The relevant search of databases was conducted, including Medline, Springer, NCBI, PubMed, Cancer organizations, WHO reports and Cancer statistics. Due to broad scope of the research questions a narrative review approach was undertaken. All studies that assessed the relation between obesity leading to ovarian cancer and obesity as risk factor for ovarian cancer were selected for review. The prevalence of obesity and overweight was found to be increasing worldwide. Obesity and overweight are believed to be related with psychological, and social problems along with other health problems. These conditions are needed to be monitored and controlled more effectively both in developed and underdeveloped countries. There is a lack of data on the relationship between obesity and ovarian cancer from low-income countries due to scarcity of resources and low awareness levels. As a result, further research is required to better understand the biological pathways underlying the connection between obesity and ovarian cancer.

Abstract: Pakistan is the male-dominated society. In such a scenario of ‘subjugation’, we find females involved in crimes. This exploratory study was conducted in Women’s prisons of Sindh province of Pakistan. It was a ‘census’ population of 100 respondents. Findings showed inmates were involved in six types of crimes i.e. Drug Trafficking (26), Murder of Husband (25), Kidnapping (23), Murder (18), Robbery/Theft (5), Child Trafficking (2) and Extra-marital relationships (1). Marxist-Feminist criminologists mention poverty and patriarchal society as etiology of the causation of female crime; findings support this theory. Out of 100 respondents, 72 were illiterates; 76 belonged to very poor and poor families. Husbands of only 17 inmates had jobs, 5 were old/ill/begging, 11 were doing nothing/gambling, while remaining 57 were farmers / laborers. Only 5 inmates were treated normally while husbands of 36 inmates had bad and violent behavior. Husbands of 42 inmates were 10-20 years older than them. Thirty out of 100 women inmates had male co-accused; almost half of them were male family members.

Abstract: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is considered as one of the major public health problems globally. Health education strategies can help in managing blood glucose level and complications among DM patients. Health education intervention is effective to manage and control the blood glucose levels among diabetic patients. This study explored the effectiveness of health education intervention on DM among school teachers in public sector schools of Pakistan. Methods This was quasi-experimental study where baseline & end line assessments were conducted on teachers of public sector schools of Sindh province, Pakistan, from October to December 2019. Pretested structured questionnaire was used in this study. Participants ( n  = 136). were randomly selected from the list of government schools registered with district education department An intervention comprised of health education sessions with DM patients was undertaken after conducting baseline assessment followed by end line assessment. The institutional review board of Health Services Academy Pakistan ethically approved this study. Results All the respondents completed post-test with mean ± SD age of participants being 39.2 ± 1.34 years. Female teachers comprised 65% out of which 70% were living in rural areas. Knowledge on DM pre-test score was 20.03 ± 3.31 that increased in post-test to 49.11 ± 2.21 ( p   〈  0.05). Mean score of information on symptoms and causes of DM was 1.98 ± 0.21 for pre-test whereas for post-test it was 4.78 ± 0.12 ( p   〈  0.05). The effect of intervention was significant on diabetes related complications ( p   〈  0.05), symptoms ( p   〈  0.05), overall score ( p   〈  0.05) and preventive practices ( p   〈  0.05). Conclusions The study provides evidence of the importance and effectiveness of health education intervention related to diabetes among school teachers, which has a positive impact on the knowledge and practices. We concluded that the health education session sensitized the teachers and they can bring cogent changes to enhance their knowledge about diabetes and its risks.

Abstract: As of the present, the twenty-first century is experiencing what may be one of its most devastating events, in respect to infected and dead people by the virus. Now known to the world as COVID-19, the devastating disease of what has become a pandemic started its spread from Wuhan, China and swiftly engulfed the whole world with almost 11 million cases, in a span of around six months. It has not only increased the global burden of disease but has heavily dented many social institutions, including education. Methods This study investigates how the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent measures of lockdown, quarantine, and social distancing have affected students. We look specifically into the effects on individuals’ mental health, that is, the stress and anxiety levels of college and university students using the Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). Results Among 494 respondents, 61% were females, and the majority (77.3%) of the students were in the age group of 19–25 years. Among the respondents, 125 (25.3%), 45 (9.1%) and 34 (6.9%) experienced minimal to moderate, severe, and most extreme levels of anxiety, respectively. The variables of gender, age and year of study were significant at the 0.25 level by univariate analyses. Nevertheless, the ordinal regression indicates that only gender was significant. The odds of a female student being more anxious are higher compared to a male student (OR = 1.779, 95% CI [1.202–2.634], P = 0.004). The most prominent stressors attained from the qualitative feedback from the Pakistani students are associated with online teaching, concerns about their academic performance and completion of the current semester, uncertainty related to exam dates, and the status of the following semester. Conclusions This study will add to the existing body of literature on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the social and psychological health of students. The study outcomes will provide basic data for further applied and action research and a framework for universities and policy makers in Pakistan and the neighboring countries in the region with the same cultural contexts. Thus, relevant health interventions can be designed for better mental health and educational attainments of students from higher educational institutions. This pathological pandemic may well lead to another pandemic of mental and behavioral illness. All stakeholders should join force regardless of pre-existing differences and inequalities to ensure the well-being of future generations, specifically students from higher educational institutions. The long-lasting impacts and the aftermath of this pandemic will unquestionably need further and future investigations. Keywords: Anxiety, students, mental health, COVID-19, Pakistan
