    Abstract: Even at extragalactic distances, the shape of supernova ejecta can be effectively diagnosed by spectropolarimetry. We present results for 17 type Ia supernovae that allow a statistical study of the correlation among the geometric structures and other observable parameters of type Ia supernovae. These observations suggest that type Ia supernova ejecta typically consist of a smooth, central, iron-rich core and an outer layer with chemical asymmetries. The degree of this peripheral asphericity is correlated with the light-curve decline rate of type Ia supernovae. These results lend strong support to delayed-detonation models of type Ia supernovae.

    Abstract: The observational status of the ubiquitous rapid variability of Be stars is summarized. The most comprehensive interpretation is obtained with a traveling velocity field and associated temperature variations. But neither the available observations nor theoretical predictions presently allow an unambiguous mode determination of these nonradial pulsations. In addition to rapid rotation, an NRP mode of low azimuthal order, m ≈ 2, seems another prerequisite for a B star becoming a Be star. The amplitudes of these modes are variable and have been observed to decrease with some delay after an outburst. For low-order sectorial modes, NRP's therefore have the potential of explaining the three oldest unsolved problems of Be stars: the difference between Be and Bn stars (the latter do not usually have a low-order mode), the episodic component of the mass loss from Be stars, and the equatorial density maximum of their winds. Mechanisms for the transfer of energy to the atmosphere and its transformation into the kinetic energy of an outburst are discussed.

    Abstract: Improved observing and data analysis strategies have initiated a considerable expansion of the empirical knowledge about the pulsations of OB stars. Possible correlations between physical parameters and associated pulsation characteristics are becoming more clearly perceivable. This starts to include the asteroseismologically fundamental areas of g -modes and rapid rotation. The β Cephei instability strip continues to be the only locus where radial pulsations occur (but apparently not in all stars located in that strip). Except for spectral types B8/B9 near the main sequence, where pulsations are hardly detected even at low amplitudes, any major group of stars in the Galaxy that are obviously not candidate pulsators still remains to be identified. However, the incidence and amplitudes of OB star pulsations decrease steeply with metallicity. The behaviour of high-luminosity stars is less often dominated by very few modes. In broad-lined stars the moving-bump phenomenon is more common than low-order line-profile variability. But its relation to nonradial pulsation is not clear. The beating of low-ℓ nonradial pulsation modes that have identical angular mode indices may be the clockwork of the outbursts of at least some Be stars. The physics of this episodic mass loss process remains to be identified.

    Abstract: Detailed spectropolarimetric studies may hold the key to probing the explosion mechanisms and the progenitor scenarios of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We present multi-epoch spectropolarimetry and imaging polarimetry of SN 2019ein, an SN Ia showing high expansion velocities at early phases. The spectropolarimetry sequence spans from ∼−11 to +10 d relative to peak brightness in the B band. We find that the level of the continuum polarization of SN 2019ein, after subtracting estimated interstellar polarization, is in the range 0.0–0.3 per cent, typical for SNe Ia. The polarization position angle remains roughly constant before and after the SN light-curve peak, implying that the inner regions share the same axisymmetry as the outer layers. We observe high polarization (∼1 per cent) across both the Si ii λ6355 and Ca ii near-infrared triplet features. These two lines also display complex polarization modulations. The spectropolarimetric properties of SN 2019ein rule out a significant departure from spherical symmetry of the ejecta for up to a month after the explosion. These observations disfavour merger-induced and double-detonation models for SN 2019ein. The imaging polarimetry shows weak evidence for a modest increase in polarization after ∼20 d since the B-band maximum. If this rise is real and is observed in other SNe Ia at similar phases, we may have seen, for the first time, an aspherical interior similar to what has been previously observed for SNe IIP. Future polarization observations of SNe Ia extending to post-peak epochs will help to examine the inner structure of the explosion.

    Abstract: Autoimmune neurological syndromes (AINS) with autoantibodies against the 65 kDa isoform of the glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65) present with limbic encephalitis, including temporal lobe seizures or epilepsy, cerebellitis with ataxia, and stiff-person-syndrome or overlap forms. Anti-GAD65 autoantibodies are also detected in autoimmune diabetes mellitus, which has a strong genetic susceptibility conferred by human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and non-HLA genomic regions. We investigated the genetic predisposition in patients with anti-GAD65 AINS. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) and an association analysis of the HLA region in a large German cohort of 1214 individuals. These included 167 patients with anti-GAD65 AINS, recruited by the German Network for Research on Autoimmune Encephalitis (GENERATE), and 1047 individuals without neurological or endocrine disease as population-based controls. Predictions of protein expression changes based on GWAS findings were further explored and validated in the CSF proteome of a virtually independent cohort of 10 patients with GAD65-AINS and 10 controls. Our GWAS identified 16 genome-wide significant (P & lt; 5 × 10−8) loci for the susceptibility to anti-GAD65 AINS. The top variant, rs2535288 [P = 4.42 × 10−16, odds ratio (OR) = 0.26, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.187–0.358], localized to an intergenic segment in the middle of the HLA class I region. The great majority of variants in these loci ( & gt;90%) mapped to non-coding regions of the genome. Over 40% of the variants have known regulatory functions on the expression of 48 genes in disease relevant cells and tissues, mainly CD4+ T cells and the cerebral cortex. The annotation of epigenomic marks suggested specificity for neural and immune cells. A network analysis of the implicated protein-coding genes highlighted the role of protein kinase C beta (PRKCB) and identified an enrichment of numerous biological pathways participating in immunity and neural function. Analysis of the classical HLA alleles and haplotypes showed no genome-wide significant associations. The strongest associations were found for the DQA1*03:01-DQB1*03:02-DRB1*04:01HLA haplotype (P = 4.39 × 10−4, OR = 2.5, 95%CI = 1.499–4.157) and DRB1*04:01 allele (P = 8.3 × 10−5, OR = 2.4, 95%CI = 1.548–3.682) identified in our cohort. As predicted, the CSF proteome showed differential levels of five proteins (HLA-A/B, C4A, ATG4D and NEO1) of expression quantitative trait loci genes from our GWAS in the CSF proteome of anti-GAD65 AINS. These findings suggest a strong genetic predisposition with direct functional implications for immunity and neural function in anti-GAD65 AINS, mainly conferred by genomic regions outside the classical HLA alleles.

    Abstract: Spectral line profiles are computed for nonradially pulsating CP2 stars. For a range which currently is thought to be typical for these stars, the influence of six parameters on the line profiles is considered: mode order ℓ and degree m, pulsation velocity amplitude, the angle between the rotation and pulsation axis, the angle between the rotation axis and the line-of-sight, and the phase angle of the rotation. In view of the expected low signal-to-noise ratio of observational data it is investigated to what extent easily measurable, simple quantities can still be useful in discriminating between different modes.
