Abstract: The aim of this paper is to propose a model to simulate the behaviour of water flows in shell and tube heat exchanger. Particularly, the continuity equation, the general heat transfer equations and the energy equation in COMSOL Multiphysics software were implemented in the numerical modelling. Besides, the experiment was also conducted to validate the proposed COMSOL model. The water temperature at locations close to the inlet and outlet of the shell side was respectively predicted at 31.5°C and 34.6°C in the simulation, and it was respectively measured at 31.5°C and 35°C in the experiment. These findings showed that the simulation results had a good agreement with the experiment. Next, this model was extended to simulate the overall heat coefficient and the pressure drops of the water flows in such heat exchanger. The overall heat coefficient was at 736.62 W/m 2 K. The pressure drops at the inlet/outlet areas of the shell and tubes were at 849.93 Pa and 6255.50 Pa, respectively. Conclusive evidence showed that the proposed model is a reliable method for studying the heat transfer behaviour of the shell and heat exchanger.

Abstract: In this work, we successfully fabricated homogeneous hydrothermal titanate nanotubes (TNTs) coated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and elucidated the role of Ag NPs on local surface plasmonic resonance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and the enhanced photocatalytic activity of TNT/Ag nanocomposite. The results showed that the photodegradation process reached equilibrium in just ~5 min for the TNT/Ag nanocomposite, which was much shorter than that of the TNT sample (~90 min). TEM micrographs showed that Ag NPs were well dispersed on the walls of the nanotubes. XRD patterns and Raman spectra indicated that the TNTs were in the monoclinic structure of H2Ti3O7. Furthermore, Raman active modes of the TNTs were significantly enhanced in the TNT/Ag sample, which was attributed to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the TNT/Ag sample was explained by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence emission spectroscopy, which showed local surface plasmonic resonance-induced visible light absorption enhancement and effective charge separation, respectively.

Abstract: Monofloral honey samples (Coffea robusta) from Vietnam were determined for their chemical compositions. This is the first report on the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of coffee honey from Vietnam. These samples were characterized by their high contents of total and reducing sugars, total phenolic contents, and total flavonoid contents. The contents of seven phenolic acids (PAs) were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and analyzed with the assistance of principle component analysis (PCA) to differentiate the honey samples into groups. The hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) (0.048–2.933 mg/kg) and free acid contents (20.326–31.163 meq/kg) of coffee honey were lower in Nepal, which reflected the freshness of the honey when conducting this survey. The coffee honey had total sugar and reducing sugar contents 831.711 g/kg and 697.903 g/kg, respectively. The high level of total phenolic (0.642 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (0.0341 mg GE/g) contents of coffee honey contributed to their antioxidant activity of this honey sample. Among the coffee honey tested, the IC50 of DPPH radical-scavenging activities value was 1.134–17.031 mg/mL, while the IC50 of ABTS radical-scavenging activities value was 115.381–213.769 mg/mL. The phenolic acids composition analysis displayed that gallic acid appeared in high concentrations in all studied honey samples, ranging from 0.037–1.015 mg/kg, and ferulic acid content ranged from 0.193 to 0.276 mg/kg. The content of trigonelline and caffeine in coffee honey samples ranged from 0.314–2.399 mg/kg and 8.946–37.977 mg/kg. The data in this article highlight the relevance of coffee honey as a healthy substance.

Abstract: In this study, the influence of different LED lighting intensities, different lighting periods of red LED and blue LED on growth, development and chlorophyll a and b synthesis on in vitro Chrysanthemum were presented. Shoot tips were inoculated and were put under 70% red LED: 30% blue LED lighting condition with different LED lighting intensities: 30, 45 and 60 µmol.m-2.s-1; different LED lighting periods: weekly intermittent lighting with red LED/blue LED (blue LED or red LED lighting for the first week), intermittent lighting with red LED/blue LED for each two weeks (blue LED or red LED lighting for the first two weeks). After 6 weeks of cultured, the results showed that LED lighting source with intensity 60 µmol.m-2.s-1 had the best stimulation on growth and development of Chrysanthemum; however, under intensity 45 µmol.m-2.s-1, chlorophyll a and b content still were the highest. In addition, weekly intermittent lighting with red LED and blue LED (blue LED was lighted at the first week) gave the best results on growth and development of Chrysanthemum. Thus, the most suitable LED lighting intensity for growth and development of in vitro Chrysanthemum was 60 µmol.m-2.s-1, and weekly intermittent lighting with red LED and blue LED (blue LED was lighted at the first week) will promote the growth and development of in vitro Chrysanthemum. The survival rates, growth and development of plants under 70% red LED: 30% blue LED and 50% red LED: 50% blue LED were higher than those of plants under Florescent, after 4 weeks of cultured in the greenhouse.

Abstract: In the present study, Hibiscus sagittifolius Kurz. seeds were used as the plant materials for studying on the effects of simulated microgravity (on a 2D clinostat) on seed germination, shoot multiplication, growth, development and secondary metabolite accumulation. After surface sterilization, seeds were cultured on MS medium supplemeted with 30 g/l sucrose and 9 g/l agar in Petri dishes (9 seeds per dish, the seed to seed distance of 1.5 cm and kept in the same direction), and maintained in a Clinostat (2 rpm). The results showed that simulated microgravity inhibited the growth and development of Hibiscus sagittifolius roots with root length of 11.83 cm, fresh and dry weight of 58.28 and 5.23 mg, respectively but it made an increase in germination rate (87%) and accumulation of secondary metabolites (the total saponins content of 53.00 mg/g and the total coumarin content of 25.67 mg/g) after 3 weeks of culture. In addition, the simulated microgravity also resulted in positive shoot multiplication (shoot height of 3.07 cm, 6.33 nodes per shoot, 3.33 shoots per explant, and the fresh and dry weight of 401.33 and 37.00 mg, respectively), and growth and development of Hibiscus sagittifolius shoots (plant height of 12.17 cm with 5.67 leaves per shoot together with the average root length of 1.77 cm, and the fresh and dry weight of 419.00 and 36.00 mg) after 4 weeks of culture. The results from this study could be attributed to future perspectives in research on plant breeding and accumulation of secondary metabolites in medicinal plants.

Abstract: This research aims to assess the factors affecting the scientific research activities of lecturers currently working at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) in the context of university autonomy implementation. Despite several challenges in lecturers’ scientific research activities (such as high pressure due to research requirements or lower research costs), university autonomy also creates certain advantages such as better research support policies or implementation of more academic autonomy policies. The research used partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) to analyse the collected data by assessing the measurement models and structural models. The research findings showed that the scientific research activities of VNU lecturers are affected by five factors, among which two factors, Scientific research experience and skills, and Scientific research motivation, have a direct influence in the same manner. The other three factors with indirect influence, in the same manner, included Procedures and funding for scientific research, Research collaboration, Attitude, and awareness of the importance of scientific research. Such research findings can act as references for VNU leaders in making and implementing science and technology development policies in line with the university’s situation in the current period to further improve the efficiency of scientific research activities of its lecturers, contributing to the enhancement in the training quality and reputation of VNU.

Abstract: A general strategy for de novo breeding technique using zero gravity has been emerging in some countries with developed space systems including Russia, the United States of America, China and Japan. In 2011, the first Kibo-ABC programme - "Asian Seeds" - began. Seeds from plants collected in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand including Impatiens balsamia, Antirrhinum majus, and Salvia splendens Ker-Gawl. seed collected by Tay Nguyen Institute for Scientific Research staff were transported to Kibo and then returned to the Earth after a few months. In the present study, germination, growth and development and phenotypic variation of the Impatiens balsamia “zero gravity seeds” were compared with seeds that were not transported into space. Five months after the sowing date, the results indicated that the germination rate of the zero gravity seeds were 2 times higher than the control (22.9% and 9%, respectively). There was no significant difference in some growth and development parameters including plant height, number of branches per plant, leaf diameter, stem diameter and chlorophyll content between the zero gravity seeds and the control. Interestingly, Impatiens balsamia zero gravity seeds derived plants bloomed 16 - 23 days earlier than the control. A few “zero gravity seed” seedlings, however, showed not only lower growth and development abilities than those of the control but also some phenotypic variations such as loss of apex, under-developed apex, unusually large leaf, loss of growth and development and axillary bud formation on internodes, or double petals. This result will be an important prerequisite for the study of plant breeding in space technology - a new way of breeding industry in Vietnam.

Abstract: Cases of vulvovaginitis caused by Cryptococcus genus are exceedingly uncommon, with only a handful of instances having been described for this causative species. This report describes a rare case of vulvovaginitis suspected to be caused by Cryptococcus victoriae in a 58-year-old woman residing in an urban area of Hanoi city, Vietnam. The patient with a 10-year history of depression and type 2 diabetes mellitus was admitted to the hospital due to vulvar itching and vaginal discharge. Vaginal swabs confirmed the presence of a yeast infection by direct microscopic examination with 10% KOH and culture on CHROMagar Candida. The yeast was identified as C victoriae using genetic sequencing tools. The patient’s treatment plan involved topical clotrimazole and a daily oral dose of 200 mg of itraconazole for 7 days. This comprehensive treatment approach resulted in the patient’s full recovery. This is the first reported case of vulvovaginitis attributed to C victoriae in humans worldwide.
