Abstract:
Poverty and income inequality in rural areas are one of the most fundamental problems that need to take precautions in the world and Turkey. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of socio-demographic and structural characteristics on poverty by measuring the poverty situation and income inequality in farms. The material of the study consists of face to face surveys conducted with 59 farms in Nazilli district of Aydın province in 2019. In the study, head count ratio, poverty gap, and poverty gap square were calculated using Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT) approach. The Gini coefficient and Lorenz curve were used to measure income inequality. According to the results of the research, the average annual income of the farms was 104790 TL, and 91% of this income was agricultural income, while 9% was non-agricultural income. The average income per equivalent scale in the farms was determined as 39595.87 TL, and the median income was determined as 103060 TL. In the study, 25% of the farms were below the poverty line. While no farms were operating under $ 1 a day, the rate of farms working under $ 4.30 was 10.2%. In the study, the Gini coefficient was calculated as 0.40, and 60% of the total population only were taken 30.76% share from the income. The characteristics that were statistically different between poor and non-poor farms in the study were determined as agricultural experience, occupational status, social security status, land size, number of land parcels, participation in extension-education, and animal husbandry. Taking these factors into consideration, it is thought that the policies to reduce poverty in rural areas will be effective.
