Abstract: ABSTRACT Purpose: this article aims at investigating the relation between the hearing abilities in the first year of life and the diagnosis of language between 2 and 4 years of age in preterm infants born weighing less than 2,000 grams. Methods: the infants were selected from the database of this program composing a group of 54 infants with transient evoked otoacoustic emissions present in the first three months, with an auditory behavior between 6 and 18 months and an evaluation of language between 2 and 4 years of age. Results: there were no statistically significant differences between the occurrence of cochlear-palpebral reflex and the ability of sound localization between 6 and 18 months regarding result of language assessment. Regarding the ability of recognition of verbal commands for children aged between 12 and 18 months, there was a statistically significant difference. Infants who present alteration on the recognition of verbal commands from 12 to 18 months are 12.25 times more likely to have language alteration at the age between 2 and 4 years. Conclusion: there is a relation between alteration on the recognition of verbal commands for children aged between 12 and 18 months and the alteration in the result of language evaluation for those aged between 2 and 4 years.

Abstract: PURPOSE: to describe the hearing findings of a family with autosome dominant hereditary hearing loss. METHODS: we evaluated 17 subjects. The evaluation was made by pure tone audiometry, Speech audiometry, tympanometry and acoustic reflex testing, in addition to genetic follow-up. RESULTS: from 17 evaluated subjects, 11 showed some degree of neurosensorial hearing loss (64.7%), being 8 female gender (73%) and 3 male gender (27%). The subject age varied from 5 to 68 years (average = 39.6) and the time from the complaint's appearance varied from 20 to 38 years. The hearing loss was modified with age. We did not find normal hearing after the age of 41 years in the family. CONCLUSION: the hearing investigation regarding all members of the family regardless of any complaint is extremely indispensable due to the existence of hearing loss even when limited to isolated frequencies.

Abstract: AIMS: To describe the auditory and language outcomes of children with early diagnosis and treatment for congenital toxoplasmosis. METHODS: A cross-sectional study included all children diagnosed with congenital toxoplasmosis, through the Minas Gerais State Neonatal Screening Program, from September 2006 to March 2007. All children received early treatment, initiated before the age of 2.5 months, and were periodically assisted by a team of specialists including pediatricians, ophthalmologists and speechlanguage therapists and audiologists. Hearing function was evaluated with the following procedures: tympanometry, transient evoked otoacoustic emissions, distortion product otoacoustic emissions, behavioral observation audiometry, and brainstem auditory evoked potentials. Hearing function and sensitivity was estimated and audiological results were classified as normal, conductive hearing loss, sensory-neural hearing loss and central dysfunction. Language performance was assessed and classified as normal or abnormal, according to test results. The following variables were studied: audiological results, neurological and ophthalmological conditions, language performance and presence of risk indicator for hearing loss other than congenital toxoplasmosis. Univariate analysis was conducted using the chi-square or Fisher´s Exact test. RESULTS: From September 2006 to March 2007, 106 children were diagnosed with congenital toxoplasmosis through the neonatal screening program, and were included in the study. Data analysis showed normal hearing in 60 children (56.6%), while 13 children (12.3%) had conductive hearing loss, four children (3.8%) had sensory-neural hearing loss and 29 children (27.4%) presented central hearing dysfunction. There was association between hearing problems and language deficits. The comparison between children with additional risks for hearing loss other than toxoplasmosis and children who only presented toxoplasmosis as a risk factor showed no differences. This finding suggests that audiological problems were due to congenital toxoplasmosis alone. CONCLUSIONS: Even with early diagnosis and treatment, a high prevalence of hearing problems and language delays was observed in children with congenital toxoplasmosis.

Abstract: ABSTRACT Purpose This study aimed to identify whether the development of hearing abilities in the first year of life is related to the development of language in preterm neonates with chronological age between 18 and 36 months, verifying if the language performance varies according to the weight/gestational age ratio. Methods Retrospective and longitudinal study approved by the Institution’s Ethics Committee. The sample consisted of 66 preterm infants of both sexes, aged 18-36 months, divided into two groups: AIG Group 39 neonates with weight appropriate to the gestational age, 26 with normal hearing and 13 with altered hearing; and PIG group 27 neonates small for gestational age, 18 with normal and 9 with altered hearing. Results from the development of auditory skills in the first year of life and evaluation of the reception, expression and total of language (Menezes, 2003) were obtained from neonatal follow-up records. We used the ANOVA and the Equality Test of Two Proportions as statistical procedures. Results In each group, we observed a significant difference in the Reception and Total language in children with normal and altered auditory development. Children with normal hearing development presented a higher percentage of language adequacy. The language performance did not differ in relation to the weight / gestational age adequacy. Conclusion Changing auditory abilities in the first year of life interfered more in language development than the gestational age / weight ratio.

Abstract: PURPOSE: to study the occurrence and magnitude of the transient otoacoustic emissions suppression in pre-term infants with high risk for hearing loss. METHODS: the study was carried out in 15 pre-term infants. The used equipment was ILO USB II V6 Clinical OAE Software from Ododynamics. The used stimulation was linear clicks displayed at the intensity of 60 dB pe SPL (± 5). The contralateral noise (white noise) was set at 60 dB SPL (± 5). RESULTS: From 15 infants, only one did not show bilateral suppression. Suppression effect was shown on 93.3% of the subjects, being 71.4% for both ears and 28.6% for only one ear. The results showed that there was a significant statistical difference between the right and left ears. We could not observe significant differences when actual and gestational age were analyzed. The baby boys showed higher responses when compared to baby girls. CONCLUSIONS: most of the studied population showed OAE suppression effect. White noise was found in the contralateral ear, and reduced the response level of the transient otoacoustic emissions, demonstrating the participation of the efferent system. The responses were different considering the side of the ear, being higher on the right ear and for boys.

Abstract: ABSTRACT Purpose To verify whether treatment with hepatitis C direct-acting antivirals has adverse effects on hearing. Methods The sample consisted of 16 individuals with hepatitis C virus, of both sexes, with an average age of 51 years. Individuals with conductive or mixed hearing loss who presented risk factors for hearing loss were excluded from the group. The evaluation was carried out in two moments: before the use of direct-acting antivirals and after the three-month treatment. It included the following procedures: anamnesis, external auditory canal inspection, pure tone audiometry, speech reception threshold, speech recognition index, acoustic immittance measures and transient and distortion product otoacoustic emissions. Results There was a low incidence of tinnitus and vertigo. There was no statistically significant difference between the results of the pre- and post-treatment assessment. Conclusion The treatment with direct-acting antivirals against the hepatitis C virus did not cause any adverse effects on hearing function.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To verify the occurrence of hearing disorders in violinists and if there is an association with the more exposed ear. METHODS: Subjects were ten violinists, eight female and two male, with ages between 17 and 69, who constituted the Study Group. They were matched according to age and gender with non-musicians with no hearing complaints. Subjects were assessed by pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, acoustic immitance measures, transient evoked otoacoustic emissions, and distortion product otoacoustic emissions, preceded by otoscopy and anamnesis. The exclusion criterion was altered tympanometry. RESULTS: There was higher occurrence of bilateral tinnitus in the Study Group. It was observed that musicians do not use hearing protector during training and presentations. In pure tone audiometry, there was no difference between thresholds obtained for both groups. It was found higher occurrence of hearing disorders in the left ear, but this difference was not significant. In the transient evoked otoacoustic emission and distortion product otoacoustic emission, there was also no difference between groups, neither in the comparison between ears. CONCLUSION: It was observed higher occurrence of hearing disorders in the group of violinists, with higher percentage of alterations in the left ear. However, the difference between right and left ears was not significant.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To analyze and compare the tympanometric gradient and the compliance obtained in probe tones of 226 and 1 kHz between groups of infants with and without gastroesophageal reflux (GER). METHODS: Participants were 118 full-term and preterm infants, from newborns to 6-month-olds - 63 with clinical diagnosis of physiological GER performed by pediatricians or gastroenterologists, and 55 without GER -, who were submitted to tympanometry with probe tones of 226 and 1 kHz. RESULTS: Higher compliance values were found with 1 kHz in both groups. Comparing the average compliance between groups, we observed that the group without reflux showed higher values. The mean value of the tympanometric gradient was higher in the group without reflux, when compared to the one with reflux. CONCLUSION: The 1 kHz probe tone has higher compliance in infants with and without GER, when compared to the 226 Hz probe tone. Infants with reflux have compliance within normal limits, although they present lower compliance than infants without reflux. Regarding the gradient, infants with GER have altered values and/or within normality limits in both ears.

Abstract: Tinnitus is a disorder extremely frequent in patients with hearing loss. It affects more than 40 milion people in the USA, affecting about 1/3 of the population above 65 years old. Clinical experience has been demonstrating that patients with hearing loss and tinnitus have great benefits with the hearing aid because it helps out the comprehension of conversation while relieves tinnitus. AIM: In this work, we have studied the efficacy of hearing aids on diminishing or eliminating tinnitus in patients with hearing loss. STUDY DESIGN: Series study. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We evaluated 47 patients (32 women and 15 men) with ages ranging from 32 to 88 years old and medical indication for fitting a hearing aid. We subjectively investigated the sensation of tinnitus matching frequency (Hz) and loudness (dB) through the technic of acuphenometry and we have attended the patients for one year aiming to verify if there was a relief of tinnitus after the hearing aid fitting. RESULTS: The majority of patients (87,2%) refered relief of tinnitus with the use of the hearing aid. In 51% of these patients tinnitus has completely desapeared. It was necessary to use the hearing aid for some months (3-8) to obtain the relief of tinnitus in the majority of patients. The characteristics of the hearing aids, as model, tecnology and vent, had no influence on the relief of tinnitus. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the hearing aid was effective in reducing or eliminating tinnitus in patients with hearing loss and tinnitus.
