    Abstract: Background: Motor dysfunctions are some of the characteristic symptoms of organophosphate (OP) poisoning and they have been associated with decreased levels of cholinesterase inhibition within motor areas of the brain. Objectives: The current study aims to investigate the potential neuroprotective effects of Nigella sativa oil (NSO) in alleviating chlorpyrifos (CPF) induced toxicity in the cerebella and motor cortices of the rat brains using combined behavioural, biochemical and histochemical methods. Methods: Thirty-two rats were randomly divided into four groups (eight rats per group), exposed to 1ml/kg of normal saline, 14.9 mg/kg of CPF, 14.9 mg/kg of CPF plus 1ml/kg of NSO and 1ml/kg of NSO respectively for 14 consecutive days. The rats were each exposed to a single trial of the Open Field Test (OFT) on day 13 of the experiment. This experimental test measured locomotor activity levels (line crossing frequency (LCF)) and exploratory (rearing frequency (RF)) activities in the rats studied. The rats were euthanized on day 15 of the experiment and the brains were subsequently excised. The cerebella cortices of five brains were removed and homogenised to analyse for total reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO) levels and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. The motor and cerebella cortices from three other brains in each group were processed for histology (Nissl stain) and proliferative activity (Ki67 immunohistochemistry). Results: Rats exposed to CPF experienced a significant increase in cerebella NO and ROS levels, depletion in AChE activity, neurogenic cells loss and subsequent reduction in locomotor and exploratory behaviours respectively (LCF and RF). However, interventional treatment with NSO depleted markers of oxidative damage (NO and ROS), reduced AChE inhibition, preserved neurogenic (Ki67) cells distribution and motor functions. Conclusion: These results demonstrate the potential efficacy of NSO in OP poisoning and the roles of neurogenic and oxidative functions in the pathophysiology and treatment of motor dysfunction in OP neurotoxicity.

    Abstract: The objectives of the study were to determine placental weight as well as factors associated with low placental weight and to determine its impact on some anthropometrical parameters in the newborn. A total of 300 freshly delivered placentas were examined in this longitudinal-prospective study. Sobi Specialist Hospital, Alagbado, Ilorin, and Surulere Medical Centre, Eruda, Ilorin, were used for sample collections. Informed consent was obtained from patients and institutional ethical clearance was obtained from Kwara State Ministry of Health (MOH/KS/ECI/777/82). Semistructured questionnaire was used to gather data on the patients and newborns demographic indices. Analysis of variance, Student’s t -test, regression analysis, and Pearson moment correlation statistical analysis were employed to analyze the data. The mean wet placental weight for normal pregnancies was 529 g (SD = 84.01). Placental weight to birth weight ratio of 1 : 5.83 was generated, 529 g impact on newborn head circumference (mean: male = 35.30 cm, female = 34.90 cm) having a linear correlation. Regression analysis showed negative association between female babies (2.99 kg) placental weight ( r = 0.369 ; P ≤ 0.05 ), birth weight, and cord length (mean = 58.4 cm). Placental weight correlation with male newborn weight (3.14 kg) had placental birth weight ratio of 0.679 between 90th and 10th percentile P 〈 0.05 with head circumference ( r = 0.473 , P 〈 0.05 ), lower limit placental diameter 22.80 ± 1.76 cm (SD = 4.8), BMI ≤ 19.50, and Apgar score of 7/10. It is concluded that blood holding capacity of the placenta (relative to weight) and the maternal-dietary have influence on placental weight. Differences in hormonal environment in utero and pathologic adaptation of placenta, due to racial factors, significantly contributed to the size of newborn baby.

    Abstract: Varying neurological effects, and impairments to motor functions, neurochemistry and neuromorphology have been associated with Aluminium  chloride (AlCl3) induced neurotoxicity. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of Nigella sativa oil (NSO) in AlCl3 induced cerebellar toxicity in rats.  Thirty-two male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups and received: normal saline; 100 mg/kg.bw of AlCl3; 100 mg/kg.bw AlCl3 and 1  ml/kg.bw of NSO; and 1 ml/kg.bw, orally and daily for fourteen days. On the 13th day of the experiment, the rats were each exposed to a single trial  of the Open Field Test (OFT), of which line crossing frequency, rearing frequency, and freezing period were recorded as measures of exploratory and  locomotive behaviours of the animals. By day 15, the rats were euthanized, their brains were excised, the cerebellum dissected from five brains of  each group, and homogenized for iochemical evaluations of nitric oxide (NO) metabolites and total reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. The  remaining three brains in each group were processed for histology and Ki67 immunohistochemistry investigations. The results of this study shows  that AlCl3 impaired motor related behaviours in the AlCl3 exposed animals, by significantly reducing the line crossing and rearing frequencies, and  increasing the freezing period. This effect was observed to be  mitigated in the animal group that received NSO following AlCl3 administration, as the animals showed improved motor behaviours. AlCl3 also caused an increase in the cerebellar activities of NO and ROS, while it depleted Ki67  expressions and caused neurodegenerative-like effects in the cerebellar histoarchitecture of the exposed animals. Intervention with NSO depleted ROS/NO levels and protected the cerebellum from the nitrosative and oxidative stress induced by AlCl3. NSO was also observed to preserve the  cerebellar cortex histoarchitecture and neurogenic morphology against the neurodegenerative effect of AlCl3. It can be concluded that NSO, with its  high efficacy against oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, is a potent natural therapeutic agent in aluminum and heavy metal neurotoxicity.

    Abstract: Background: Imperforate hymen is an uncommon obstructive congenital anomaly of the female external reproductive channel due to lack of canalization (lower) vaginal plate between the vaginal and urogenital sinus; with a prevalence rate of less 〈 0.1%. Hematocolpos / imperforate hymen with heamatometra often presents as a pelvic mass that compresses the urinary bladder causing acute urine retention and pain. Case presentation: A 14-year-old presented with lower abdominal pain for 5 months. Patient physical examination revealed normal secondary sexual characteristics with a thickened than normal hymen. She presented with delayed menarche; a physician earlier prescribed analgesic and anthelmintic medication for pain management. After conservative hymenotomy about 360ml of dark-tan haem (blood) was drained in few minutes. Postoperative recovery was uneventful; normal menstruation occurred after 4 weeks.   Conclusion: Diagnosis through physical examination and ultrasound requires vigilance and a high degree of suspicion; virginity sparing is a viable treatment option due to social reasons and religious beliefs.

    Abstract: Background: Thyroidal ultrasound has been used to detect neck lesions and nodules for decades. However, cystic thyroid disease is rare with few reported series. Different consensus exists concerning availability of medical treatment and the limited role of surgical management. Case presentation: We present a 31-year-old female with obvious neck swelling and dysphagia. Ultrasound diagnosed a suspected colloidal thyroid cyst in the right lobe. The hypoechoic cystic mass measures 3.2 cm x 3.6 cm on frozen sonogram, with evidence of bilateral (cervical) lymphadenopathy. Thyroid cystic nodule viewed via sonar corresponds to detected mass finding on observation and palpitation. Researchers have recently standardized Thyroid-Imaging- Reporting and Data System (TIRADS), mostly in the United States. Conclusion: If Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) and hormone therapy fail, cysts larger than 〉 2.8cm may require surgical intervention, especially when there is a danger of great-vessel compression.

    Abstract: Diabetes is associated with an upset of hematological and immunological parameters in humans, however information on the effects of Lycopene is scarce. The aim of the study was to gain information on basic changes in hematological parameters as markers for safety since anemia as a complication in diabetic chemotherapy has been reported. Results Lycopene had anti-anemic effects and improved on the immune status of diabetic rats and these observations were dose independent. There was a decrease in neutrophil, low neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio and platelet counts and stable albumin, globulin levels. Lycopene could exert its protective effects through a balance of basic hematological physiological variables.

    Abstract: This study compares the pathophysiology of normal and growth retarded human placental tissues. Female patients were recruited from the Antenatal Clinic of Dolu Specialist Hospital, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos, between 2008 and 2012. A total of 48 normal term placentas and 15 placentas of known IUGR cases were used for this study. IUGR cases were confirmed on the basis of ultrasound follow-up and diagnosis. Normal term placentas were collected at the point of delivery by a consultant gynaecologist, the cords were clamped, and membranes were then carefully trimmed after which each placenta was weighed. About 1 cm thickness of both normal and growth retarded placenta tissues was cut, processed for hematoxylin and eosin stain, while tissues for enzyme (ALP) assay were homogenized in cold 0.5 M sucrose solution. Comparative analysis of the data was done using ANOVA; P 〈 0.05 was taken as significant. The photomicrographs were observed/studied under light microscope, using the X150 and X600 magnifications. It was revealed therein that placental tissues are homogenous (regionally), compromised of maternal spiral arterioles and deregulated villous vasculogenesis, and that there is a significant difference in the level of alkaline phosphatase enzyme. We therefore concluded that there is a distinct difference between the normal and growth retarded human placenta tissue.

    Abstract: Stress among medical students is related to their academic lifespan; however, information on brain health among medical students from developing countries continues to be scarce. The objective of this study was to establish perceived academic stress levels, assess the ability to cope with stress, and investigate its effects on the visual reaction time (VRT), audio reaction time (ART), and tactile reaction time (TRT) in the somatosensory cortex among medical students of Uganda. Methods This was a cross-sectional study conducted among preclinical ( n = 88) and clinical ( n = 96) undergraduate medical students at Kampala International University Western Campus. A standard Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) was used to categorize stress into low, moderate, and severe while the ability to cope with stress was categorized into below average, average, above average, and superior stresscoper (SS). Data on reaction time were acquired through VRT, ART, and TRT using the catch-a-ruler experiment, and this was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results This study shows that preclinical students are more stressed than clinical students (PSS prevalence for low stress = preclinical; clinical: 40, 60%). Moderate stress was 48.4 and 51.6% while high perceived stress was 75 and 25% among preclinical and clinical students. Among male and female students in preclinical years, higher TRT and VRT were found in clinical students showing that stress affects the tactile and visual cortical areas in the brain, although the VRT scores were only significantly ( P = 0.0123) poor in male students than female students in biomedical sciences. Also, highly stressed individuals had higher TRT and ART and low VRT. SS had high VRT and ART and low TRT in preclinical students, demonstrating the importance of the visual cortex in stress plasticity. Multiple regression showed a close relationship between PSS, ability to cope with stress, age, and educational level ( P & lt; 0.05), demonstrating the importance of social and psychological support, especially in the biomedical sciences. Conclusion Preclinical students suffer more from stress and are poorer SS than clinical students. This strongly impairs their cortical regions in the brain, thus affecting their academic productivity.

    Abstract: Background: Jatropha curcas is a multipurpose plant with several industrial and medicinal importance. Its seeds contain many active compounds that are used as medicines with antiinflammatory, and antioxidant activity. Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of extract of Jatropha curcas seed which is patronized locally in some communities as agent of preventing childbirth on reproductive functions in female Wistar rats. Methods: Twenty-four animals were randomly divided into four groups of 6 rats each. Group I was administered normal saline and served as control. Groups II, III and IV were given the seed extract orally at doses of 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg body weight respectively daily for 14days orally. The animals were euthanised and blood samples collected for oestrogen, progesterone, FSH and LH assay. Statistical analysis was done using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Differences in means was obtained using ANOVA test. All values reported in the study were expressed as mean ± SEM. Differences in mean was taken to be significant at P 〈 0.05. Results: There was significant reduction (p 〈 0.05) in levels of progesterone, LH and FSH in moderate and high doses of the extract. But estrogen level was significantly (p 〈 0.05) decreased in both low and moderate doses, while the high dose showed significant (p 〈 0.05) increase. Conclusion: There was alteration in reproductive hormones due to arrest of development of ovarian follicles. This gives it the propensity of exhibiting contraceptive activity.
