Notizen: In a field experiment on an organic soil, a pre-emergence application of paraquat at 2–24 kg a.i. (active ingredient)/ha was made to a plot on which onions and lettuce were grown; and similar broadcast applications of linuron, both with and without carbofuran, at two field rates, to plots on which carrots were grown. Paraquat generally increased the bacterial and actinomycetal populations while linuron inhibited the same but enhanced the numbers of fungal propagules, although it decreased the proportion of soil penicillia in the population. The overall effect of linuron was not changed by the admixture of carbofuran. However, the changes in microbial populations by either herbicides were not substantial enough to make gross or lasting differences in levels of available N and P, and in the CO2 evolution rate.

Notizen: [Auszug] The extensive use of humic acids as the sole source of carbon during growth by micro-organisms has recently been reported5. Because enzymes are specific and their reaction conditions mild, the initial products of microbial enzyme cleavage should be more indicative of the constituents and structures ...

Notizen: Summary Functional group content of undegraded humic acids was compared with that of humic acids which had been partially degraded by a strain ofPenicillium frequentans. It was found that cleavage of humic acids by this organism did not involve reduction of the carboxyl groups. It was suggested that one of the steps involved was hydrolysis of the ether bonds present in humic acids.

Notizen: Summary Except when cultures were well aerated by shaking,Marasmius oreades (Bolt.) Fr., the fairy ring mushroom, was able to utilize, in pure culture studies, fractions of humus from sources as divergent as the A horizon of a chernozemic soil and the Bh horizon of a Podzol. The importance of this ability to soil infestation was discussed and it was suggested that improved soil aeration be studied as a control measure.

Notizen: Abstract Copper concentrations should be maintained at 100 ppm (gg Cu g−1 dry soil) in the surface layers of undecomposed peat soils, and 400 ppm in humified muck soils. The Cu supports plant nutrition, and inhibits enzymes that degrade the organic soils (Histosols). The required or extravagant applications of Cu may threaten groundwater quality if the Cu, or elements displaced by the Cu, moves downwards in the soils. To test this, powdered CUSO4.5H2O was applied to the top 15 cm of replicated microplots of organic soils to increase their Cu concentrations by 0, 150, 500, and 1500 ppm at field sites A (peat) and B (muck) in May 1978 and by 0, 100, 300, and 800 ppm at field site C (mucky peat) in 1979. Duplicate cores of up to 50 cm depth were taken in the spring of 1981 from each of the 56 microplots and analyzed. At all sites, none of the Cu additions caused significant displacement and downward movement of Ca, Mg, K, Fe, Mn, or Zn. There was a leaching of small fractions of the applied Cu down to 40 cm depth only when 1500 ppm of Cu was added to the humus-poor, acidic peat at site A. Some of the Cu applied at the 500 ppm rate at site A and 1500 ppm rate at site B was found in the 20 to 30 cm zone. At site C, none of the applied Cu moved from the top 20 cm (plow layer).

Notizen: Abstract The distribution of pollutant heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, and Pb) was determined in 11 acidic virgin peat profiles located along two transects moving away from a smelter plant in the Noranda region of Quebec. The levels of all five metals were found highest in the 0 to 15 cm layer at site near the smelter, and decreased progressively with the distance from the smelter, up to 42 km. Copper had the highest concentrations (5525 μg g−1) followed by Pb and Zn. The maximum levels of total metals built up in the peat surface near the smelter were high, approximately reaching the threshold limits for phytotoxicity in peat soils. The amounts of heavy metals moving down and accumulating in the anaerobic zone of the peat profiles were limited. The distribution and enrichment ratios in the profiles showed that Cu, Zn, and Cd would have relatively higher mobility than Pb.

Notizen: Abstract Twelve profiles were obtained from a 2 ha field, 6 from where Cu had been applied for 15 yr and 6 from areas not fertilized with Cu. The 30 to 50 cm layers in the profiles in both areas contained similar amounts of Cu indicating a lack of vertical migration of the fertilizer metal under field conditions. A buried layer of humified material was found mostly between 50 and 60 cm depth. Of the mineral elements which enriched this layer during degradation and humification, perhaps a few thousand years ago, Cu, Pb and Mn were apparently retained more than Ca, Fe, Ni, Al, Mg, Zn and K.
