Notes: Abstract: Apoptosis and expression of apoptosis-regulating proteins, Bcl-2 and Bax, have been observed in human breast carcinomas. The authors investigated whether expression of Bcl-2 and Bax proteins and apoptotic index (AI) had significance in cases of primary breast cancer. The authors evaluated Bcl-2 and Bax immunoreactivity and AI in primary breast cancers with the ApopTag method in 91 breast cancer patients retrospectively with long-term follow-up (median 60 months). Bcl-2 expression was seen in 60 (65.9%) cases and Bax expression was observed in 59 (64.8%) cases. Increased Bcl-2 and absence or low Bax immunoreactivity were significantly associated with low AI, high tumor grade, axillary lymph node involvement, postoperative recurrence, and metastasis. Thirty-five (38.5%) samples expressed high AI, which correlated with low tumor grade, absent axillary lymph node metastasis, and low levels of Bcl-2 with Bax overexpression. In univariate analysis, the variables associated with short relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were large tumor size, axillary lymph node involvement, high histologic grade, low AI, high Bcl-2 expression, and absence or low Bax expression. In multivariate analysis, only Bcl-2 expression, lymph node status, and histologic grade were of independent prognostic value with respect to RFS and OS. Because the vast majority of the patients in this study received chemotherapy, it can be concluded that these apoptotic markers were also predictive of response to chemotherapy. Immunostaining of apoptosis-related genes, Bcl-2 and Bax, together with AI, may stratify high- versus low-risk breast cancer patients.

Notes: The crystallinity, surface morphology, and I-V characteristics of the Ag thin films deposited on fractal substrates by rf magnetron sputtering have been investigated. The poor crystallinity, fractal surface morphology, and abnormal nonlinear I-V behavior of the thin films have been observed. The crystallinity of the films deposited on the fractal substrates is improved by increasing the substrate temperature and the thickness of the thin films. The nonlinear I-V characteristics are influenced by the thickness of the thin films, substrate temperature, and measuring environment.

Notes: [Auszug] L27 domain, initially identified in the Caenorhabditis elegans Lin-2 and Lin-7 proteins, is a protein interaction module that exists in a large family of scaffold proteins. The domain can function as an organization center of large protein assemblies required for establishment and maintenance of ...

Notes: Abstract  Perforated patch recording with nystatin, amphotericin B and gramicidin can be more difficult in the hands of some investigators than others. In addition, it is difficult to introduce low molecular weight substances such as dyes into the cytoplasm in such experiments. We have determined that β-escin represents a convenient, easy-to-use alternative to less water-soluble ionophores.

Notes: Abstract This study proposes a mathematical model which was developed from the ‘O'Melia-Ali’ and ‘Adin-Rebhun’ models, to describe the entire filtration cycle. The three coefficients appearing in this model were calculated for different operating conditions using 30 cm depth filter experiments. The concentrations and headloss profiles simulated for different filter depths using these coefficients were found to fit very well with experimental results.

Notes: This article deals with the synthesis and properties of poly[(propylene glycol maleate)-co-(propylene glycol phthalate)] diol (PGMPD)/polyester-urethane or polyether-urethane hybrid polymer networks (HPNs). The polyurethane type and the molar ratio of NCO/OH have an effect on their properties. The structure-property relationship is discussed as well. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Insulin was co-immobilized with a cell adhesion factor - fibronectin or polyallylamine - on a surface-hydrolyzed poly(methylmethacrylate) film. Chinese hamster ovary cells overexpressing human insulin receptors were cultured on the film in the absence of serum or soluble proteins. While insulin immobilization did not affect cell adhesion, insulin immobilized on fibronectin-immobilized film reduced the adhesion. Addition of the tetrapeptide Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser (RGDS) inhibited cell adhesion onto fibronectin-immobilized films while cell adhesion onto polyallylamine-immobilized films was not inhibited by RGDS. Small amounts of immobilized insulin (1 to 10% of the amount of free insulin required to achieve cell growth acceleration) were sufficient to stimulate cell proliferation. The maximal mitogenic effect of immobilized insulin was greater than that of free insulin. In addition, co-immobilization with the adhesion factor remarkably enhanced the mitogenic effect. The phosphorylation of the receptor with free insulin attained the maximum degree very rapidly but ceased quickly. On the other hand, the receptor phosphorylation with immobilized insulin was accompanied by a longer induction period and lasted a longer period of time than that with free insulin. Insulin co-immobilization on fibronectin or polyallylamineimmobilized films reduced the induction period by enhancement of cell adhesion. The early and long-lasting receptor activation might have been caused by the greater mitogenic effect of co-immobilized biosignaling polypeptides. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Description: The 15-month climatology of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) during a solar minimum period has been constructed from observations of a dense GPS receiver array in Central China. In total, 793 MSTID events are identified, with peaks in occurrence at 1500 LT and 0100 LT. The occurrence of MSTIDs decreases following an increase in geomagnetic activity, with 46% of the MSTIDS occurring in the daytime. Daytime MSTIDs are characterized by a major occurrence maximum around the winter solstice and by an equatorward propagation direction. The period, phase velocity, azimuth, and amplitude of daytime MSTIDs are 20–60 min, 100–400 m/s, 130°–270°, and 0.8–1.5%, respectively. The remaining 54% of the MSTIDs occurred at night, and were characterized by a peak in occurrence at the summer solstice and by a southwestward propagation direction. The period, phase velocity, azimuth, and amplitude of nighttime MSTIDs are 20–70 min, 50–230 m/s, 170°–300°, and 2–7%, respectively. The propagation directions and the seasonal behaviors support the view that daytime MSTIDs are an ionospheric manifestation of atmospheric gravity waves from the lower atmosphere, while a possible excitation mechanism of nighttime MSTIDs is the electrodynamics process caused by plasma instability in the F layer.
