    Notes: Summary Water samples collected in the southwestern Indian Ocean between Africa and Antarctica in March 1980 were analyzed quantitatively for phytoplankton. Diatoms dominate the phytoplankton in this region and their numbers generally increase southward with peaks of abundance in both the northern Antarctic Zone and south of the Antarctic Divergence. Average cell numbers (i.e., 6.1×105 diatoms l-1 in the Antarctic Zone) are comparable to maximum numbers previously reported for the Southern Ocean. Dinoflagellates, flagellates and “monads” occur in highest concentrations north of the Polar Front. Their numbers are somewhat reduced south of the Antarctic Divergence, and are lowest in the Antarctic Zone. Various diatom assemblages are characteristic of different latitudinal zones. Waters north of and in the vicinity of the Polar Front are rich in the Nitzschia, Pseudonitzschia group of species. In the Antarctic Zone, Nitzschia “nana” and Dactyliosolen tenuijunctus dominate. Nitzschia species of the Fragilariopsis group are most numerous at stations south of the Antarctic Divergence. Striking differences are noted between the species compositions of quantitative and net-haul samples. A few nanoplanktonic diatoms (e.g. Nitzschia “nana” and single cells of Chaetoceros spp.) and the weakly silicified Dactyliosolen tenuijunctus, which are dominant in the quantitative samples, are either entirely absent or present only as solitary cells in the net collections.

    Description: This study is a first effort to compile the largest possible body of data available from different plankton databases as well as from individual published or unpublished datasets regarding diatom distribution in the world ocean. The data obtained originate from time series studies as well as spatial studies. This effort is supported by the Marine Ecosystem Data (MAREDAT) project, which aims at building consistent data sets for the main PFTs (Plankton Functional Types) in order to help validate biogeochemical ocean models by using converted C biomass from abundance data. Diatom abundance data were obtained from various research programs with the associated geolocation and date of collection, as well as with a taxonomic information ranging from group down to species. Minimum, maximum and average cell size information were mined from the literature for each taxonomic entry, and all abundance data were subsequently converted to biovolume and C biomass using the same methodology.

    Description: Since the early 1990s, phytoplankton has been studied and monitored in Potter Cove (PC) and Admiralty Bay (AB), King George/25 de Mayo Island (KGI), South Shetlands. Phytoplankton biomass is typically low compared to other Antarctic shelf environments, with average spring - summer values below 1 mg chlorophyll a (Chl a)/m**3. The physical conditions in the area (reduced irradiance induced by particles originated from the land, intense winds) limit the coastal productivity at KGI, as a result of shallow Sverdrup's critical depths (Zc) and large turbulent mixing depths (Zt). In January 2010 a large phytoplankton bloom with a maximum of around 20 mg Chl a/m**3, and monthly averages of 4 (PC) and 6 (AB) mg Chl a/m**3, was observed in the area, making it by far the largest recorded bloom over the last 20 yr. Dominant phytoplankton species were the typical bloom-forming diatoms that are usually found in the western Antarctic Peninsula area. Anomalously cold air temperature and dominant winds from the eastern sector seem to explain adequate light : mixing environment. Local physical conditions were analyzed by means of the relationship between Zc and Zt, and conditions were found adequate for allowing phytoplankton development. However, a multiyear analysis indicates that these conditions may be necessary but not sufficient to guarantee phytoplankton accumulation. The relation between maximum Chl a values and air temperature suggests that bottom-up control would render such large blooms even less frequent in KGI under the warmer climate expected in the area during the second half of the present century.
