    Notes: Growth and food intake of juvenile flounders from the Kiel Bight were measured experimentally at different salinities (0, 5, 15 and 35 %). The growth at the middle levels (5 and 15 %) was faster then at 0 and 35 %. The reason for lower rates of increase in the freshwater group is the lower food intake. In the 35 % group the slower growth is caused by the worse food conversion. The variance of the individual growth rates in the 15 % salinity group remains far below the values of all other groups.

    Notes: Abstract Live reptant decapod crustaceans have never been collected on the Antarctic continental shelf, although shrimps occur locally in large quantities. Therefore, the collection of four male individuals of the anomuran decapod Lithodes murrayi off Peter I Island, close to the Antarctic Continent, between 180 and 260 m water depth in February 1994 is of particular relevance for further studies on the origin and adaptation of Antarctic decapods. Another five specimens were observed in situ by a remotely operated vehicle at the same location.

    Notes: Abstract Brood protection in the holothurianPsolus dubiosus Ludwig and Heding, 1935 was investigated in the Antarctic zone of permanent packice, an environment with an extreme seasonality in planktonic activity. Yearly reproductive cycles on the continental shelf of this area have been poorly investigated. Brooded juveniles of this species were found for the first time between the retracted tentacles of adult females at two different localities in the southeastern Weddell Sea, sampled in spring (October 1986) and autumn (February 1984). Mean lengths of the juveniles of each brooding female showed significant differences within each sample. However, there was no detectable difference in size of the juveniles between the two seasons. The results are discussed as an uncoupling of the dynamics of the early life history of these benthic invertebrates in space and time from processes in the euphotic layer of the Southern Ocean. The species investigated follows the general trend of some Antarctic invertebrates towards a non-pelagic development.

    Notes: Abstract We analysed growth of the Antarctic bryozoan Melicerita obliqua (Thornely, 1924) by x-ray photography and stable isotope analysis. M. obliqua colonies form one segment per year, thus attaining maximum length of about 200 mm within 50 years. In the Weddell and Lazarev Seas, annual production/biomass ratio of M. obliqua is 0.1 yr−1, which is in the range of other Antarctic benthic invertebrate populations. Production amounts to 3.34 mg Corg m−2 yr−1 and 90.6 mg ash m−2 yr−1 on the shelf (100 to 600 m water depth), and to 0.13 mg Corg m−2 yr−1 and 36.8 mg ash m−2 yr−1 on the slope (600 to 1250 m water depth).

    Notes: Abstract Mega-epibenthic shelf assemblages were investigated off Northeast Greenland and in the Weddell, Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas in the Antarctic using underwater video. In the Arctic a total of 94 taxa represented by more than 100 000 individuals were identified. Echinoderms, particularly brittle stars, were the most important elements of the mega-epibenthic fauna on the shelf off Northeast Greenland. Multivariate analyses of the species distribution revealed a conspicuous depth zonation in which an assemblage on the shallow banks can be clearly distinguished from that in the troughs. Between these a transitional zone with a heterogeneous benthic fauna was found. Physical disturbances are supposed to be responsible for the pronounced dominance patterns observed on the shallow banks. The fauna in the troughs, which consists of more than 50% suspension feeders, is diverse but low in numbers of individuals. In the Antarctic more than 115 000 individuals belonging to 169 taxa were analyzed. Obvious faunal differences exist between the stations in the Weddell Sea and the Bellingshausen/Amundsen Seas. Assemblages of suspension feeders dominated by sponges and bryozoans are prevalent on the shelf of the eastern Weddell Sea, but almost absent in the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas. These assemblages seem to be restricted to areas where bottom currents provide favourable feeding conditions. However, motile deposit feeders are more abundant in both regions where there is a soft bottom substrate with presumably slow bottom currents and reduced horizontal transport of organic particles.

    Notes: Abstract Composition and distribution of megabenthic communities around Svalbard were investigated in June/July 1991 with 20 Agassiz trawl and 5 bottom trawl hauls in depths between 100 and 2100 m. About 370 species, ranging from sponges to fish, were identified in the catches. Species numbers per station ranged from 21 to 86. Brittle stars, such asOphiacantha bidentata, Ophiura sarsi andOphiocten sericeum, were most important in terms of constancy and relative abundance in the catches. Other prominent faunal elements were eunephthyid alcyonarians, bivalves, shrimps, sea stars and fish (Gadidae, Zoarcidae, Cottidae). Multivariate analyses of the species and environmental data sets showed that the spatial distribution of the megabenthos was characterized by a pronounced depth zonation: abyssal, bathyal, off-shore shelf and fjordic communities were discriminated. However, a gradient in sediment properties, especially the organic carbon content, seemed to superimpose on the bathymetric pattern. Both main factors are interpreted as proxies of the average food availability, which is, hence, suggested to have the strongest influence in structuring megabenthic communities off Svalbard.
