Notes: —A study was made of the effects of unilateral visual deprivation and stimulation upon the activities of alkaline phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.1), acid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.2), Na+-K+ activated Mg2+ catalysed ATPase (EC 3.6.1.4) and upon the Na+ and K+ contents of the optic lobe of adult pigeon (Columba livia). Visual deprivation was achieved by eyelid suturing or by enucleation and maintained for 1–9 weeks. Unilateral visual stimulation was maintained for 75 min following 72 h of darkness. A statistically significant increase in the activity of alkaline phosphatase activity was observed in the optic lobe after unilateral visual deprivation whereas unilateral visual stimulation resulted in the opposite effect. Acid phosphatase activity was found to be unchanged under all experimental conditions. Na+-K+ ATPase activity was found to increase significantly following unilateral visual stimulation and following eyelid suturing in the corresponding optic lobes; unilateral enucleation resulted in a decrease in the Na+-K+ ATPase activity. An increase in the enzyme activity was found to be associated with an increase in the level of Na+-ion and a decrease in the level of K+-ion, and vice versa.

Notes: Abstract— A study was made of the effect of unilateral visual deprivation and stimulation upon the activities of glutamate decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.15), GABA-α-ketoglutarate transaminase (EC 2.6.1.19). aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1) and hexokinase (EC 2.7.1.1) in the optic lobe of the adult pigeon (Columba Livia). Visual deprivation was achieved by eyelid suturing or by enucleation and maintained for 1–9 weeks. Unilateral visual stimulation was maintained for 75 min following 72 h in the dark. A small but significant increase was observed in the activities of glutamate decarboxylase and aspartate aminotransferase after unilateral visual stimulation and a decrease after unilateral enucleation. The activities of GABA-α-ketoglutarate transaminase and hexokinase decreased after unilateral visual stimulation and increased after enucleation. Unilateral eyelid suturing resulted in a significant reduction in the activity of glutamate decarboxylase and an increase in the activity of GABA-α-ketoglu-tarate transaminase. Hexokinase activity was, however, unchanged following unilateral eyelid suturing.

Notes: Summary Three satellites on the heavy side of the main band and two satellites on the light side were isolated in a pure from by preparative ultracentrifugation of H. vulgare DNA in Ag+/Cs2SO4 density gradients. The satellites were characterised in terms of their buoyant densities in CsCl and their thermal dissocation temperature in both native and reassociated forms to Cot 4. In CsCl gradients, heavy satellites formed a single peak whereas light satellites resolved into more than one component. Thermal transitions of some satellites indicated the presence of more than one molecular species. The multicomponent nature of thermal denaturation profiles was evident on differential analysis. Radioactive RNAs complementary to the three heavy satellites of H. vulgare were localised by in situ hybridization onto its nuclei and chromosomes. One heavy satellite (H3) was found to be distributed on all chromosomes, although one pair showed less hybridization compared to the others. The other satellite (H1) appeared to be present in a much lower amount on the chromosomes.

Notes: Summary Three satellites, one (H1) on the heavy side of the main band of Hordeum arizonicum DNA and two (L1, L2) on the lighter side were purified using preparative silver-cesium sulphate density gradients. The native and the reassociated satellite DNAs were analysed in terms of buoyant densities and thermal dissociation. In cesium chloride gradients the H1 and L1 satellites formed single peaks corresponding to buoyant densities of 1.700 and 1.701 g · cm−3 respectively while the L2 satellite gave two peaks (1.680 and 1.661 g · cm−3). The H1 satellite showed three thermal components (Tm=82.5 °C, 87 °C and 91.5 °C) while the L1 and L2 had three (86.5, 92, 97.5 °C) and two (86, 95 °C) respectively. The H1 satellite was localized on the nuclei and chromosomes. The distribution of H1 onto approximately on third of the complement may reflect the genome specific origin of this satellite.

Notes: Abstract Biodegradation of resorcinol and catechol was studied in upflow anaerobic fixed film-fixed bed (FFFB) reactors of uniform dimensions in mono and multisubstrate matrices. Cross feeding studies have revealed that phenol was poorly degraded in resorcinol acclimated reactor whereas it was readily degraded in catechol acclimated reactor. Addition of resorcinol along with phenol in a COD ratio 1:3 in resorcinol reactor increased phenol removal efficiency to 95% indicating that resorcinol induces phenol degradation. When both resorcinol and catechol were fed to the resorcinol acclimated reactor, it was observed that resorcinol degradation was inhibited by catechol. Catechol acclimated reactor could degrade phenol readily when added as mono substrate indicating that it may be an intermediate in catechol degradation. In binary mixture studies also catechol reactor could degrade phenol, resorcinol and hydroquinone to 90%. Catechol acclimated reactor exhibits relaxed substrate specificity whereas resorcinol acclimated reactor exhibits rigid substrate specificity for phenol as well as other isomers.

Notes: Abstract An α-amylase from a hyper-producing strain of Bacillus (sp. E2) was stable at 70°C for 30 min but was quickly inactivated at higher temperatures. In the presence of 10mm Ca2+ and starch (20% w/v), however, the enzyme was stable at 90°C for 10 min and after 30 min at 100°C still retained 26% of its initial activity.

Notes: Abstract Chlorophenol degradation was studied by combined anaerobic–aerobic treatments as a single or multi-substrate system. 2,4-Dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) was degraded to the extent of 52 and 78% in up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and aerobic suspended growth (ASG) reactors respectively, at organic loading rates of 0.18 kg/m3/day and hydraulic retention time of 26.4 h in the presence of glucose. The UASB represents the dominating facultative anaerobic microbial population. When the effluent from the anaerobic reactor (UASB) was subjected to aerobic treatment on the ASG reactor, 2,4-DCP and COD removals of 86 and 95% respectively were achieved. Aerobic degradation of chlorophenol by acclimated mixed bacterial isolates was found to be sequential: 2-Chlorophenol (2-CP) and 4-CP were degraded first, followed by 2,4-DCP and 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) while the contrary was obtained in anaerobic degradation. In anaerobic degradation by acclimated mixed bacterial cells, 2,4-DCP and 2,4,6-TCP were degraded first followed by mono-chlorophenols. The anaerobic/aerobic bioreactors were most efficient when operated in sequence (series) rather than in parallel.

Description: Author(s): D. Chakrabarti, T. Maji, C. Mondal, and A. Mukherjee We investigate the Wigner distributions for u and d quarks in a light-front quark-diquark model of a proton to unravel the spatial and spin structure. The light-front wave functions are modeled from the soft-wall AdS/QCD prediction. We consider the contributions from both the scalar and the axial ve… [Phys. Rev.
