Notes: Field tests demonstrate that sampling of soft bottom sediments can be significantly improved by combined box coring and shipboard sampling using hand-operated piston coring. A convenient piston equipment devised for such subsampling is presented.

Notes: Abstract The textural, mineralogical, compositional and paleontological characteristics of an iron-cemented allochthonous sediment slab recovered from a zone of slumping between water depths of 2,100 and 2,350 m on the lower continental slope off Cape Hatteras are summarized. Results support interpretation of the sediment slab as the oxidized equivalent of pyrite-cemented Pleistocene to Recent sediment, an uncommon form of lithification in deep sea sediments. We propose that exposure of such slumped sediment slabs to seawater has produced an alteration sequence from pyrite-cement to iron oxide-cement. These observations extend the range of pyrite-cemented sediment initially reported from water depths between 4,770 and 4,950 m on the lower continental rise off Cape Hatteras.

Description: Deep sea sediments contain more Cu, Ni, Ba, B etc., than transport of detrital terrigenous matter (TM) can explain. Longdistance transport in dissolved from is of no importance for many of these elements. Marine biological matter (BM) is enriched in Cu, Ni, Ba, B etc. Conservative mixing models, using BM and TM as inputs show that the compositional variations in pelagic sediments can be explained by these sources. Such mixing models have been used to estimate how the influx of BM and TM have varied with time, and to what extent different elements ares upplied by BM and TM. The results show that in Cenozoic Equatorial Pacific sediments CaCO₃, opaline silica, B, Ba, and Cu are predominantly biogenous. It is probable that also P and Ni belong to this group of elements, whereas almost all Al, Ti, Zr, V and Mn are delivered by TM or some volcanic processes. The accumulation rates (AR) for the biological constituents reached maxima during the L. Oligocene and the Miocene, and minima during the U. Oligocene and the Pleistocene; some AR from the Oligocene and the Miocene being 3-6 times higher than at present. The accumulation rate patterns for opaline silica, Ba and B co-vary, whereas the AR for CaCO₃ show another time dependance pattern. These AR-patterns are probably partly due to climatic variations. Plankton in Pacific Equatorial waters incorporate much more Cu, Ni, etc., than is required for the particulate transport of these elements to the ocean floor. This suggests that transport in particulate form of BM is an important source of Cu, Ba, B, etc. for the deep sea floor.

Description: We studied the grain-size, mineral and chemical compositions, physical properties, radiocarbon age, spore-pollen spectra, and diatom composition in sediments from Core PSh24-2537 sampled in the West Gotland Basin. Four lithological-stratigraphic units were distinguished: varved clays of the Baltic Ice Lake, black and black-gray (sulfide) clays of the Yoldian Sea, gray clays of Ancylus Lake, and greenish-gray sapropel-like littorine and post-littorine silts of the marine stage of Holocene. These units differ from each other both in their matter composition and in plant remains. In the littorine silts organic carbon concentra¬tion reached from 1.5 to 10.35%. Conditions of sediment accumulation and the stages of evolution of the West Gotland Basin over the post-glacial time are characterized.
