Notes: Baking (Pb, La)(Zr, Ti)O3 capacitors in a hydrogen atmosphere causes a significant loss of remanent polarization even at 150 °C. The hysteresis variations depend on the polarization states during baking. The hysteresis loop showed voltage shifts when the capacitor was polarized before baking, whereas it became a cramped shape when the baking was carried out on a virgin capacitor. Although remanent polarization diminished in all cases, saturation polarization was not suppressed. The clamped hysteresis loop can be described as an average of two loops shifted to positive and negative voltages. The results indicate that the loss of remanent polarization is not due to the suppression of switching, but due to the shift of the hysteresis of each domain larger than the coercive voltage. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Based on the light extinction of total internal reflection by triangular prisms, very sensitive detection of the shock front and fast moving free surface has been demonstrated for 1 GPa shock waves in polymers. This is the first experimental verification of the feasibility of the inclined-prism technique for the relatively low shock stress region, which was originally proposed and used by Eden and Wright for obtaining the high-explosive generated shock Hugoniot of several condensed materials. The present method has the advantage that it only requires closing the gap between the free surface of the target and the reflected surface of the prisms. The feasibility and the limitation of the method have been discussed both theoretically and experimentally. A typical streak photograph for a PMMA specimen is shown to compare with the published data. It is seen that the present method is very sensitive for shock arrival detection even in the 1 GPa shock stress region. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Perinuclear type of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (p-ANCA) have been found in patients with periarteritis nodosa. Churg-Strauss arteritis. or pauci-immune idiopathic crescentic glomerulonephritis. Recently, the association of p-ANCA and normotensive renal failure, in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), was reported. We have studied the incidence of p-ANCA in patients with SSc and have investigated its relationship to clinical and laboratory findings. Sera from 77 patients with SSc were examined by the indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) test, employing an ethanol-fixed human neutrophil and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, using purified myeloperoxidase (MPO) as an antigen (MPO-ELISA). The sera from seven patients (9-1%) were p-ANCA positive, by both IIF and MPO-ELISA. One patient died from systemic necrotizing angiitis but the remaining six patients have shown no symptoms of systemic vasculitis or of renal involvement. There was a tendency for patients positive for p-ANCA (anti-MPO antibody) to also be positive for other autoantibodies. such as anti-Sc1-70 antibody, anti-centromere antibody, anti-microsome antibody, anti-thyroglobulin antibody and rheumatoid factor. Although the incidence of p-ANCA (anti-MPO antibody) is low in patients with SSc, and its clinical significance in SSc needs further investigations, this could be a serological marker for certain symptoms in SSc.

Notes: Background Olopatadine hydrochloride (olopatadine; Allelock®) is one of the second-generation antihistamines that are treated for allergic disorders such as rhinitis, urticaria and eczema dermatitis. Olopatadine has recently been shown to have inhibitory effects on the chronic contact hypersensitivity induced by repeated application of oxazolone in mice. Although topical steroids have widely been prescribed for atopic dermatitis, a relapse often occurs within several days after discontinuation of their prolonged use. Objectives We investigated the possible efficacy of olopatadine against the relapse after discontinuation of prolonged use of topical prednisolone in the Balb/c mice with oxazolone-induced chronic contact hypersensitivity. Methods Mice with the chronic contact hypersensitivity induced by repeated application of oxazolone were treated with olopatadine as a sequential therapeutic agent. The effects of olopatadine were quantified by measurements of ear-swelling, and levels of cytokines and histamine in the lesioned ear. Results Topical prednisolone (0.05 mg/ear/day) significantly inhibited the increases in ear swelling and production of IL-1β, IL-4, IL-18, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and histamine. However, after discontinuation of the treatment with topical prednisolone, the inflammation relapsed and the IL-4 level exceeded the control one. The sequential treatment with olopatadine (10 mg/kg/day) after discontinuation of the treatment with topical prednisolone alone, or topical prednisolone with olopatadine, significantly inhibited the increases in ear swelling and levels of IL-1β, IL-4, IL-18, GM-CSF, nerve growth factor and histamine. Conclusions These results indicate that olopatadine is an antihistamine agent having inhibitory activities against the rebound phenomenon following the discontinuation of topical steroid therapy. Olopatadine is thus expected to be a sequential therapeutic agent after discontinuation of the chronic treatment with a topical steroid.

Notes: : Folate contents of a total of 210 dairy products, including milk, yogurt, ice cream, sherbet, frozen yogurt, pudding, sour cream and cheese, were measured by Lactobacillus casei microbiological assay after the extraction using trienzyme treatment. These values are compared with those using traditional folate conjugase treatment alone and those in previously published food tables. Folate contents by the method using trienzyme treatment were uniformly higher than those using the traditional method and the published contents. To our knowledge, the values published here are the largest collection of folate content of dairy products and can be used to accurately assess dietary folate intake in the general population.
