Notes: Abstract Orocaecal transit time (OCTT) using the lactulose hydrogen breath test was investigated in 16 patients (age 10–19.4 years) with active Crohn disease (CD). Disease activity was assessed by the paediatric CD activity index (PCDAI). OCTT was prolonged in all patients (mean 149.9 min, SD 32.7) relative to healthy age-matched controls (mean 56.9 min, SD 11.1). PCDAI was increased (median 48.8, range 32.5), indicating moderate to severe disease in all patients. A close correlation between OCTT and PCDAI (Spearmanr=0.90) was observed. Following nutritional therapy with a semi-elemental diet over a period of 6 weeks OCTT and PCDAI declined, OCTT becoming normal in 4 and PCDAI in 4/12 patients respectively. OCTT provides a sensitive, noninvasive method for the assessment and followup investigations in patients with CD.

Notes: Abstract An automation of the sample preparation and analysis of mineral oil contaminations in water was developed. The automated sample preparation was carried out according to ISO/DIS 9377–4 [1]. The standard is applicable to the determination of hydrocarbons in the boiling range of n-decane (n-C10) up to n-tetracontane (n-C40) by GC. Extraction of the sample and clean-up of the extract were performed by an autosampler with a movable head which is capable of carrying different syringes for gas and liquid handling. A GC/MS-system with a programmed temperature vaporizing (PTV) injector including the possibility of large volume injections (LVI) was employed for the analysis. The recovery of analytes was 101.8%, the repeatability 2.9% relative standard deviation (RSD). The linear range covered 0.3 to 40 mg/L oil but may be larger since no higher concentrations were measured. With an FID, being the detector of choice mentioned in the standard, it should be possible to achieve at least four orders of magnitude in the linear range. The limit of determination was found to be 0.3–0.4 mg/L, the limit of detection 0.1–0.2 mg/L [2]. Measurements of spiked deionized, bidistilled water and spiked water from a lake confirmed the accuracy of the analysis. Due to automation and miniaturization of the analysis it is possible to economize time and chemicals without loss of precision and accuracy.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary It is given a very common method to calculate the vertical gradient of gravity of global and lokal models of the earth's crust by the aid of digital computers. Using a simple digital simulated model of the crust in a mountain area the following results are presented: a)Distribution of gravity, b) Vertical gradient of gravity and c) Free-air and Bouguer anomalies. The results are compared with real gravity measurements in the Eastern Alps. Regression of Free-air anomaly and elevation has shown again, that gravity prediction is problematic in mountainous areas.

Notes: Summary Nemaline-structures seen in muscular dystrophy, dermatomyositis, and atypical neuromuscular disease with myxoviruslike inclusions are described. These observations confirm the interpretation that nemaline structures are an unspecific reaction arising in a heterogenic group of myopathies. Therefore, the appearance of nemaline structures doses not justify the assumption af a particular myopathic disease.

Notes: Abstract The Uralide orogen, in Central Russia, is the focus of intense geoscientific investigations during recent years. The international research is motivated by some unusual lithospheric features compared with other collisional belts including the preservation of (a) a collisional architecture with an orogenic root and a crustal thickness of 55–58 km, and (b) large volumes of very low-grade and non-metamorphic oceanic crust and island arc rocks in the upper crust of a low–relief mountain belt. The latter cause anomalous gravity highs along the thickened crust and the isostatic equilibrium inside the Uralides lithosphere as well as the overthrust high-metamorphic rocks. The integrated URSEIS '95 seismic experiment provides fundamentally new data revealing the lithospheric architecture of an intact Paleozoic collisional orogen that allows the construction of density models. In the Urals' lithosphere different velocity structures resolved by wide-angle seismic experiments along both the URSEIS '95- and the Troitsk profile. They can be used to constrain lithospheric density models: a first model consists of a deep subducted continental lower crust which has been highly eclogitized at depths of 60–90 km to a density of 3550 kg/m3. The second model shows a slightly eclogitized lower crust underlying the Uralide orogen with a crustal thickness of 60 km. The eclogitized lower crust causes a too-small impedance contrast to the lithospheric mantle resulting in a lack of reflectors in the area of the largest crustal thickness. Both models fit the measured gravity field. Analyzing the isostatic state of the southern Urals' lithosphere, both density models are in isostatic equilibrium.

Notes: Abstract  By fieldwork within the frame of the KTB project a new set of 1800 gravity data has become available. Prominent Bouguer anomalies are produced by the ZEV (high with −6 mGal), the Grafenwöhr block (low with −24 mGal) and the granites (low with −46 mGal). The vertical gradient map gives information about the near-surface structure. In addition, spectral analysis and upward continuation of the field data give information about depth extension of the granites and other units. The density structure of the crust is outlined by 3D interactive forward modeling. Regional anomalies are caused by the Erbendorf body and the dipping Moho. Local and dominating anomalies have different sources: (a) the foreland sediments with an underlying deep structure (possibly of ZEV material); (b) the ZEV metamorphic units (gneisses and metabasites); and (c) the granites. The ZEV units are controled by the steeply inclined SE1 reflector as a tectonic element. The Falkenberg granite provides two thirds of the total granitic volume and its depth reaches 6.5 km, whereas other granites reach depths of 2–3 km. The nature of the crustal material below the granites and of the Erbendorf body remains unknown.

Notes: Summary Using the method of target factor analysis (TFA) described by Malinowski and Howery a computer program has been developed to study different sets of gas chromatographic retention data. Physico-chemical, topological and uniqueness parameters have been found to be basic factors to describe solute behaviour problems. Factor analytical solutions have been used to reproduce the data matrices and to make predictions based on best sets of basic factors. The mean absolute error in the reproduction step is between 1.72 retention index units (i.u.) for a relatively simple matrix consisting of retention indices of alcohols and 7.36 i.u. for a combined data matrix of alcohol, aldehyde and ketone retention indices. TFA has also been used to classify solutes based on their retention behaviour. Alkanes have been classified from cycloalkanes, alkanes from alkenes, and alcohols from aldehydes and ketones using only their retention data and a special kind of uniqueness vector.
