Notes: Be ions are implanted into Te-doped Ga0.96Al0.04Sb layers grown by liquid-phase epitaxy. Be distribution is analyzed from secondary-ion mass spectrometry profiles and is found to be in good agreement with a computed simulation one. Hall-effect measurements show a complete electrical activity of the Be-implanted ions. Mesa devices are realized on the Ga0.96Al0.04Sb p+/Ga0.96Al0.04Sb n−/GaSb+ system: Be implantation leads to good quality junctions exhibiting homogeneous multiplication.

Notes: The Tammann–Tait empirical equation of state [Z. Phys. Chem. 17, 620 (1985)] is deduced from the thermodynamic equation of state, and compressibilities derived using the former equation are compared with those obtained using raw P,V,T, data for n-pentadecane. The agreement is in the range of 8%–15% and is not improved when the pressure is raised up to 3 100 bars.

Notes: Photoionization mass spectrometry experiments, performed on an extensive size range of aluminum clusters produced by laser vaporization technique, are reported. Ionization potential values are deduced from individual photoionization efficiency curves for the smaller AlN clusters (N=36–112). Our results confirm and complete those previously published. The mass spectra of larger clusters (N≈250–1400) reveal a regular signal oscillation. Several additional experiments give proof that this striking pattern originates from size-dependent ionization threshold effects. This structure exhibits exact periodicity as a function of N1/3 or Ne1/3 (Ne the number of valence electrons).

Notes: Two trials of an electronic thermometer (Rite Time), designed to record and interpret basal body temperature (BBT) patterns in normal ovulating women, are described. A total of 140 menstrual cycles from 34 women, who used the thermal or symptothermal methods of natural family planning, were studied. Rite Time gave a signal for the start of the infertile period in 117 cycles, of which 114 (97%) appeared to have occurred at appropriate times. Further studies using hormonal and ultrasound reference points for ovulation were carried out in 21 cycles. Rite Time generally produced BBT patterns of quality acceptable for interpretation of the periovulatory BBT shift. About one-half of the volunteers said that they would be willing to replace their conventional charting methods with Rite Time.

Notes: A 49-year-old woman presented with a 1-year-history of a widespread eruption which proved to be due to leukaemia cutis. Subsequently, she developed pancytopaenia and a bone marrow biopsy revealed refractory anaemia with excess blasts in transformation (RAEB-T) with a high monoblastic component. This transformed into acute myeloid leukaemia. Leukaemia cutis in this context is well described but in this patient it became manifest 1 year prior to referral to the dermatologist. When occurring with a myelodysplastic syndrome, leukaemia cutis often heralds malignant transformation to acute myeloid leukaemia. Prompt diagnosis in this situation may identify a group of high-risk patients with myelodysplastic syndrome for whom chemotherapy and allogenic bone marrow transplantation, rather than the more conventional approach of supportive treatment, could be a more appropriate management strategy.

Notes: Background Several studies have investigated the possible involvement of viral agents, particularly herpesviruses, in primary cutaneous lymphoma (PCL).  Objectives Our aim was to screen for the presence of human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) and 8 (HHV-8) genomes in samples of PCL, and to determine if their presence was independent of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV).  Methods Screening was performed using polymerase chain reaction assay in 64 skin samples from historical lesional tissues with PCL.  Results Only nine cases showed positivity for HHV-7: four of 29 mycosis fungoides (MF), two of four CD30-positive large-cell cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), two of 12 follicle centre cutaneous B-cell lymphoma (CBCL) and one of nine marginal zone CBCL. Fifteen cases tested positive for EBV: seven of 29 MF, two of four pleomorphic small/medium sized CTCL, three of three angiocentric CTCL, one of 12 follicle centre CBCL and two of nine marginal zone CBCL. All cases were uniformly negative for HHV-8. No simultaneous positivity was found for EBV and HHV-7. Controls tested negative for all viruses.  Conclusions The findings indicate that EBV, HHV-7 and HHV-8 seem not to be involved in the pathogenesis of PCL.

Notes: In the period 1962–1974, 36 patients with X-linked ichthyosis, belonging to 22 families, were selected for study. The frequency of this genodermatosis is higher in the province of Salamanca than in other countries. In most of the cases, the lesions were apparent at birth or shortly after. In 41% of the patients studied by slit-lamp microscopy, posterior embriotoxom was seen. Hyperkeratosis was seen in follicular and sweat duct orifices. Statistical analysis of the pedigrees showed a higher proportion of affected males among the offspring of carriers and also among the offspring of the ichthyotics' sisters. In addition, among the patients' descendants, the higher ratio of females is statistically significant, showing that there is likely to be selection in favour of the X chromosome.

Notes: A family in which three brothers were affected by both X-linked ichthyosis and hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is described. This clinical observation suggests that an X-linked recessive gene may be operative together with other genetic and non-genetic factors in the aetiology of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.

Notes: Clusters of iron, cobalt, and nickel are produced in a laser vaporization source. The size distributions of the incident clusters are checked by time-of-flight mass spectrometry before deposition at low energy. Studying the near threshold photoionization, Con and Nin clusters exhibit an icosahedral structure while for iron, no clear structure emerges. Neutral clusters were deposited on different substrates at room temperature with thicknesses up to 100 nm in view to determine their structure and magnetic properties. A limited coalescence of the clusters is observed from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. No icosahedron has been observed but cuboctahedron and interface twins between adjacent particles have been clearly identified in Ni films. Grazing incidence x-ray diffraction experiments reveal a classical phase with grain size around 6 and 4 nm for Fe and Ni films, respectively but an anomalous fcc phase for Co films and a very low grain size of 2 nm. The density of films determined by x-ray reflectivity was estimated to represent only 60%–65% of the bulk density. Magnetic behaviors studied by ferromagnetic resonance and SQUID magnetization measurements have been interpreted using the correlated spin glass model. Mössbauer spectra performed on Fe films at zero field revealed the presence of 20% of iron in the form of thin nonmagnetic oxide skin surrounding Fe grains which allow to find 2.2 μB per magnetic iron atom in agreement with macroscopic magnetic measurements. Nevertheless we found an anomalous reduced atomic moment for Ni film.
