    Abstract: Exposure to extreme temperature during pregnancy was associated with abnormal birth outcomes including preterm birth, low birth weight, and placental abortion. Bee bread is a natural product created by bees that is highly nutritional and was recommended for human consumption as a source of high energy and protein. Hence, this study aims to determine the effect of bee bread on pregnancy outcomes and the reproductive system of the ovary and uterus in rats exposed to heat stress.

    Abstract: The study was conducted to determine of copper (Cu) in muscle tissue of Tinfoil Barn Fish ( Barbonymus schwanenfeldii ) and surface water at Kuantan River and Pinang River, Pahang. The study also determine the water quality parameters and water quality index (WQI). The fish was caught by using gill net and the were digest using acid digestion method and analysed by Inductive Coupled Plasma Micro Spectrometer (ICP-MS). The mean concentration of Cu in fish muscle was 0.5070 ± 0.01748 mg/kg for Kuantan River and 0.4732 ± 0.01807mg/kg for Pinang River which below the permissible limit set by Malaysia Food Act (MFA) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Cu concentration were 0.0052 ± 0.0004390 mg/kg in Kuantan River and 0.0017 ± 0.00006669 mg/kg in Pinang River. The level of Cu in both rivers were not harmful to the fish as the concentrations are below the permissible limit set by US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and National Water Quality Standard (NWQS). There was no significant difference (p 〈 0.05) in the concentration of muscle tissue for Cu between rivers. In contrast, there showed a significant difference (p 〈 0.05) in the concentration of Cu in water between rivers. Kuantan River and Pinang River have been classified in Class II according to the Department of Environment (DOE) that the water must require conventional treatment for water supply purpose.

    Abstract: Anthropogenic activity near the Setiu River basin can have a detrimental effect on people who use water in the area in terms of their body health. This study was important to assess the impact of river water degradation based on household perception so that the related parties can take intensive action to address this problem on the impact of river water degradation on human health. It involved 203 locals living along the Setiu River basin. Questionnaires were distributed and collected through face-to-face and "Google forms". The survey was conducted for four months from 1 January 2022 to 1 May 2022. All the respondents were locals who are Malaysian citizens. The data were obtained through questionnaires including questions based on a 5-point Likert scale and analysed by the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Software. Current water quality data was obtained through secondary data from the Department of Environment (DOE), Terengganu. The respondents' Income, Awareness, Knowledge, and Attitudes supported the hypothesis that demographic and socio-economic factors had significant differences in the risk perception for the impact of water pollution on human health. This study identified health issues related to the water pollution of Sungai Setiu among the residents from the questionnaire distributed by a regression analysis model.

    Abstract: Reproductive health and male fertility are closely related to dietary practices. In recent years, Malaysia has shown a lot of interest in using herbal plants as dietary supplements or in the treatment of numerous diseases. Aquilaria malaccensis, commonly known as karas or gaharu, has recently gained attention for its potential to cure many diseases due to its pharmacological properties. However, studies on its effect on male fertility and reproductive organs are very scarce. This study was conducted to determine the effect of A. malaccensis on male reproductive organs’ weight (testis, epididymis, prostate gland and seminal vesicle) and sperm quality (sperm count, sperm morphology and sperm motility) in adult Sprague Dawley rats. Twenty-four male Sprague Dawley rats were allocated into four treatment groups; Control (C: 1 mL of distilled water, n = 6), Treatment 1 (T1: 1 g A. malaccensis/kg body weight, n = 6), Treatment 2 (T2: 2 g A. malaccensis/kg body weight, n = 6) and Treatment 3 (T3: 3 g A. malaccensis/kg body weight, n = 6), respectively. Distilled water and A. malaccensis were administered by oral gavage once daily for 28 days. The rats were euthanised on Day 29 for assessment of reproductive organs’ weight and sperm quality. Result shows that weight of testis, epididymis, prostate gland, seminal vesicle and sperm motility did not differ (p 〉 0.05) among control and treated groups. A significant increase (p 〈 0.05) of sperm number (1.36 × 10??) and a decrease (p 〈 0.05) in percentage of the abnormal sperm (8.17%) were observed in T1 group when compared to Control group. Incremental dosage of A. malaccensis seemed to decrease number of sperm (T3: 0.78 × 10?? 〈 T1: 1.36 × 10?? with p 〈 0.05) and increase percentage of abnormal sperm (T3: 18.83% 〉 T2: 12.17% 〉 T1: 8.17% with p 〈 0.05). In conclusion, the administration of either 1, 2 or 3 grams of A. malaccensis did not alter the reproductive organs’ weight and sperm motility. However, the higher concentration of A. malaccensis consumed by the rats seemed to have detrimental effects on the number and morphology of sperm.

    Abstract: Heavy metal exhibit toxic and persistent characteristics, can enter into the food chains and the ecosystem where they cause adverse impact on the biotic and abiotic components of ecosystem. Heavy metal pollution in Malaysia has become a major health concern for humans. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the level of cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) in the muscle and gill of fishes collected from the Sungai Kuantan and Sungai Riau. Field sampling was conducted between September and December 2017. Five different species of fishes: Barbonymus gonionotus (Lampam Jawa), B. schwanenfeldii( Lampam Sungai), Hampala macrolepidota(Sebarau), Chitala chitala (Belida), and Hemibagrus nemurus(Baung) were digested by using acid digestion method and analysed with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS). Concentration of Cd among species were in order of: H. macrolepidota 〉 B.gonionotus 〉 B. schwanenfeldii 〉 C.chitala 〉 H.nemurus, whereas Ni level in fishes were: C. chitala 〉 H. macrolepidota 〉 B. gonionotus 〉 H. nemurus 〉 B. schwanenfeldii. Among all the species, H. macrolepidota from Sungai Kuantan had the highest Cd in both muscle (0.1761±0.0062¬mg/kg) and gills (0.2938±0.0066mg/kg) whereas the highest Ni level in muscle was noted in C. chitala from Sungai Kuantan with (0.1473±0.0755 mg/kg) and in gills of B.gonionotus (0.4544±0.0470mg/kg) from the same river respectively. It was obtained that there was a significant difference (p 〈 0.05) of Cd in muscle between species. Ni concentration in fishes was below the permissible limit stipulated by World Health Organizations WHO (1985) and Food and Agriculture Organizations (2012) but the concentration of Cd was recorded high. However, it was still below the World Health Organization (WHO) 1985 and Malaysian Food Act (MFA) 1983.

    Abstract: The spatial distribution of lead, zinc, cadmium, copper, and arsenic in Polymesoda expansa from Sungai Geting, Tumpat Kelantan were determined with inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometer, in comparison to the levels in their surrounding water body. The objectives of this research was to determine the possible health risks associated with heavy metal accumulation via consumption of Polymesoda expansa by using Target Hazard Quotient (THQ). The data indicate have associations between the concentrations of metal measured in study sampled and the levels observed at the sites. The results suggested that the concentration of arsenic in Polymesoda expansa was relatively higher than those studied elements. The concentration of arsenic in studied sample demonstrate the sources of the antropogenic inputs. In terms of risk assessment, concentrations of metals in Polymesoda expansa were significantly below the Malaysian Food Regulation 1985.

    Abstract: Bioaccumulation of heavy metals in mollusc is one of the crucial topics in environmental pollution, toxicology and food safety as it gives great impact on the ecosystem and human health. This study was conducted to identify the level of Cadmium (Cd) and Nickel (Ni) in the soft tissues of mud clams (Polymesoda expansa) and in water samples at Sungai Balok, Pahang. The mud clams and water samples were collected from five sampling stations in Sungai Balok. Sampling was carried out during dry season (May 2018) and wet season (January 2019). The mud clams’ tissues were digested and  analysed with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The obtained results revealed that the mean level of Cd and Ni in tissues of mud clams during wet season (0.127±0.104 and 0.909±0.482)mg/kg were higher compared to dry season (0.031±0.014 and 0.245±0.106)mg/kg respectively. Both of Cd and Ni concentrations in the mud clams were found below the limits stated by FAO/WHO (1984), MFA (1983) and FSANZ (2002). There was no significance different (p 〈 0.05) between Cd and Ni in both seasons. Meanwhile, the concentration of Cd in water samples from Balok river during both seasons were the same, which were (0.0001±0.001)mg/kg respectively, whereas for Ni, the concentration in dry and wet season were slightly different with value of 0.0088±0.001mg/kg and in Jan 2019 is 0.0062±0.001ppm. All the water samples from both seasons had Cd and Ni concentrations within Malaysia’s National Water Quality Standard NWQS limits.

    Abstract: Water is a vital for all aspects of human and ecosystem survival. The evaluations of water quality parameters and hydrological status are necessary to enhance the performance of an assessment operation and develop better water resources management and plan. There are three sampling stations were selected along the Kuantan River. Seven water quality parameters were measured and Malaysian Department of Environment Water Quality Index (DOE-WQI) was calculated and classified based on the National Water Quality Standard, Malaysia (INWQS). The water balance status applied to determine the stability of inflows and outflows into and from the basin. As a result, all water quality parameters (DO, COD, BOD, TSS, NH3-N and pH) which categorized under the ranged of class II until class IV respectively. Kuantan River located in Pahang state, Malaysia which is significantly degrading due to human activities as well as urbanization in and within the area. Overall, the result showed that the estimated average sediment that flows out of Kuantan Rivers is 108.88tonnes/day (24 February 2017) and 44.917 tonnes/day (30 April 2017). The contributors of sedimentation problems in Kuantan River are from unsustainable land use such as urbanization and industrialization which trapping the bed sediments and river band erosion.

    Abstract: Mining activities at the upstream of the Kuantan River basin can be resulted to adverse impacts for both human and aquatic lives. The heavy metal contamination of aquatic environment has gained the public attention. In fact, in recent decades, urban activities and industrial waste have led to an increase in contamination of heavy metals in the water bodies which may have direct effect on aquatic ecosystem. Therefore, this study aims to determine the level of Aluminium (Al) and Copper (Cu) in the muscle and gills of giant freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) collected from five selected rivers in Kuantan, Pahang. Field sampling was conducted between September and December 2017. The giant freshwater prawns were digested and then analysed with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The obtained results revealed that, Al levels in muscle of M.rosenbergii among all rivers occurred in the rank order: Pandan river 〉 Riau river 〉 Pinang river 〉 Kuantan 〉 Balok river, while in gills: Pandan river 〉 Kuantan river 〉 Balok river 〉 Pinang river 〉 Riau river. The concentration of Cu in muscle were in order of: Pandan river 〉 Pinang river 〉 Riau river 〉 Balok river 〉 Kuantan river, whereas Cu in gills were: Pandan river 〉 Balok river 〉 Kuantan river 〉 Pinang river 〉 Riau river. The highest content level of Al and Cu in both prawn’s muscle (14.03 ± 3.55 and 12.28 ± 3.87) mg/kg and gills (7.06 ± 2.53 and 12.28 ± 3.87) mg/kg were caught from Pandan River. In risk and safety assessment, the metal concentrations in the edible muscle of prawn were found to be below the established limits by WHO (1982), MFA (1983, US FDA (2001), and JECFA (2000). Thisstudy suggests that the prawns caught from Kuantan river are safe for human consumption.
