Abstract:
Postgraduate training in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine is heterogeneous in Europe. Physicians, scientists and pharmaceutics can undergo postgraduate training in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine in Europe. There are differences in terms of duration and content of particular postgraduate training. Most challenging are the differences in the formal approval of degrees within and between countries in Europe. With regard to harmonization, quality assurance and standardization of postgraduate training in both sections of “Laboratory Medicine/Medical Biopathology” of the “European Union of Medical Specialists” (UEMS) and the “European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine” (EFLM) passed a common and revised curriculum regarding postgraduate training in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. The EFLM published the professional title “Specialist in Laboratory Medicine” (formerly “European Specialist in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine”). The UEMS awarded the polyvalent degree “Specialist in General Laboratory Medicine – Polyvalent Medical Biopathology” as well as four monovalent degrees. The present article provides an overview of the current situation in postgraduate training in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine in the member states of the European Union (EU) in comparison to Germany. Future goals of the UEMS and the EFLM as umbrella organizations for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine in the EU are discussed.
