Abstract:
As soon as children want to participate in the culture of movement and sports, they need basic motor competencies (BMC). Therefore, the acquisition of BMC in primary school physical education is a core objective in primary school curricula. However, a considerable part of European pupils do not develop sufficient BMC during primary school years. Interventions that allow conclusions about the design of school-based programs to promote BMC are warranted. The aim of this study is to examine the immediate and long-term effects of an 8‑week competence-oriented teaching program on 2nd, and 4th grade pupils’ BMC. It was hypothesized that a teaching program with competence-oriented measures for motor-active (ability), cognitive-reflexive (knowledge), and self-regulated (willingness) engagement with one’s BMC would have a positive effect on the development of overall competence, object-movement, and self-movement. In a quasi-experimental study, 2nd ( N IG = 71, N KG = 56), and 4th grade ( N IG = 65, N KG = 51) classes were randomly assigned to an intervention and control group and BMC were tested in pre-, post-, and follow-up design. Repeated-measures ANCOVAs with BMI and gender as covariates revealed medium group effects, strong time effects and small to moderate timexgroup interaction effects for overall competence, object-movement, and self-movement. For object-movement, only a time effect was observed in 4th grade. The results suggest that a competence-based teaching program can promote BMC in primary school physical education. Nevertheless, the lack of an interaction effect on object-movement in the 4th grade shows that these effects are not general. Future studies should continue to investigate the effects of competency-oriented interventions on pupil’s competence development.
