    Abstract: Multiple evidence from epidemiological studies has suggested association between physical activity and risk of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the conclusion was still controversial between studies, and whether the association was causal or confounded is elusive. To evaluate the role of physical activity with different intensities in the risk of MS, we first estimated their genetic correlation, and then conducted two-sample and multivariable Mendelian randomization analyses based on summary statistics from previous large genome-wide association studies. A significant genetic correlation was identified between moderate physical activity and the risk of MS (genetic correlation: -0.15, SE=0.05, P=2.9E-03). Meanwhile, higher moderate physical activity was significantly associated with a reduced risk of MS (OR:0.87, 95% CI:0.80-0.96, P=3.45E-03). Such association was further verified using summary statistics from another study on overall physical activity (OR:0.36, 95% CI:0.17-0.76, P=6.82E-03). The results were robust under all sensitivity analyses. Current results suggested moderate physical activity could reduce the risk of MS. These findings help better understand the role of physical activity in MS, and provide some lifestyle recommendations for individuals susceptible to MS.

    Abstract: The fabrication of conformal nanostructures on microarchitectures is of great significance for diverse applications. Here a facile and universal method was developed for conformal self-assembly of nanospheres on various substrates including convex bumps and concave holes. Hydrophobic microarchitectures could be transferred into superhydrophilic ones using plasma treatment due to the formation of numerous hydroxyl groups. Because of superhydrophilicity, the nanosphere suspension spread on the microarchitectures quickly and conformal self-assembly of nanospheres can be realized. Besides, the feature size of the conformal nanospheres on the substrates could be further regulated by plasma treatment. After transferring two-dimensional tungsten disulfide sheets onto the conformal nanospheres, the periodic nanosphere array was demonstrated to be able to enhance the light harvesting of WS2. Based on this, a light-enhanced room-temperature gas sensor with a fast recovery speed ( 〈 35 s) and low detecting limit (500 ppb) was achieved. Moreover, the WS2-covered nanospheres on the microarchitectures were very sensitive to the changes in air pressure due to the formation of suspended sheets on the convex bumps and concave holes. A sensitive photoelectronic pressure sensor that was capable of detecting the airtightness of vacuum devices was developed using the WS2-decorated hierarchical architectures. This work provides a simple method for the fabrication of conformal nanospheres on arbitrary substrates, which is promising for three-dimensional microfabrication of multifunctional hierarchical microarchitectures for diverse applications, such as biomimetic compound eyes, smart wetting surfaces and photonic crystals.

    Abstract: Intercalation has been demonstrated to be a powerful tool for tuning the physical and chemical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, providing the highest possible doping level and an ideal system to study various electronic states. In this work, we demonstrate that the nonlinear absorption effect of few-layer graphene (about 6–8 layers) is changed from saturable absorption (SA) to reverse saturable absorption (RSA) after lithium intercalation. This is attributed to the increase of Fermi energy owing to the charge transfer from Li to graphene layers in intercalated compounds (LiC 6 ). And the change of nonlinear absorption effect is revisable after deintercalation. In addition, the modulation depth of RSA in lithiated graphene is found to rise with the decrease of incident laser wavelength, different from that of pristine graphene. Besides, the dispersion relationships of degenerate and nondegenerate two-photon absorption are analyzed from the results of nonlinear absorption and transient dynamics of lithiated graphene, indicating the 1.91–2.21 eV upshift of the Fermi surface. Our findings of the intercalation-tunable nonlinear optical absorption effect pave the way for the construction of nonlinear optical devices based on 2D intercalation compounds.

    Abstract: The competition between different spatiotemporal carrier relaxation determines the carrier harvesting in optoelectronic semiconductors, which can be greatly optimized by utilizing the ultrafast spatial expansion of highly energetic carriers before their energy dissipation via carrier–phonon interactions. Here, the excited‐state dynamics in layered tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) are primarily imaged in the temporal, spatial, and spectral domains by transient absorption microscopy. Ultrafast hot carrier expansion is captured in the first 1.4 ps immediately after photoexcitation, with a mean diffusivity up to 980 cm 2 s −1 . This carrier diffusivity then rapidly weakens, reaching a conventional linear spread of 10.5 cm 2 s −1 after 2 ps after the hot carriers cool down to the band edge and form bound excitons. The novel carrier diffusion can be well characterized by a cascaded transport model including 3D thermal transport and thermo‐optical conversion, in which the carrier temperature gradient and lattice thermal transport govern the initial hot carrier expansion and long‐term exciton diffusion rates, respectively. The ultrafast hot carrier expansion breaks the limit of slow exciton diffusion in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides, providing potential guidance for high‐performance applications and thermal management of optoelectronic technology.

    Abstract: Deep-learning (DL) network has emerged as an important prototyping technology for the advancements of big data analytics, intelligent systems, biochemistry, physics, and nanoscience. Here, we used a DL model whose key algorithm relies on deep neural network to efficiently predict circular dichroism (CD) response in higher-order diffracted beams of two-dimensional chiral metamaterials with different parameters. To facilitate the training process of DL network in predicting chiroptical response, the traditional rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) method is utilized. Notably, these T-like shaped chiral metamaterials all exhibit the strongest CD response in the third-order diffracted beams whose intensities are the smallest, when comparing up to four diffraction orders. Our comprehensive results reveal that by means of DL network, the complex and nonintuitive relations between T-like metamaterials with different chiral parameters (i. e., unit period, width, bridge length, and separation length) and their CD performances are acquired, which owns an ultrafast computational speed that is four orders of magnitude faster than RCWA and a high accuracy. The insights gained from this study may be of assistance to the applications of DL network in investigating different optical chirality in low-dimensional metamaterials and expediting the design and optimization processes for hyper-sensitive ultrathin devices and systems.

    Abstract: Histological grade (HG) is commonly adopted as a prognostic factor for ER-positive breast cancer patients. However, HG evaluation methods, such as the pathological Nottingham grading system, are highly subjective with only 50–85% inter-observer agreements. Specifically, the subjectivity in the pathological assignment of the intermediate grade (HG2) breast cancers, comprising of about half of breast cancer cases, results in uncertain disease outcomes prediction. Here, we developed a qualitative transcriptional signature, based on within-sample relative expression orderings (REOs) of gene pairs, to define HG1 and HG3 and reclassify pathologically-determined HG2 (denoted as pHG2) breast cancer patients. Results From the gene pairs with significantly stable REOs in pathologically-determined HG1 (denoted as pHG1) samples and reversely stable REOs in pathologically-determined HG3 (denoted as pHG3) samples, concordantly identified from seven datasets, we extracted a signature which could determine the HG state of samples through evaluating whether the within-sample REOs match with the patterns of the pHG1 REOs or pHG3 REOs. A sample was classified into the HG3 group if at least a half of the REOs of the 10 gene pairs signature within this sample voted for HG3; otherwise, HG1. Using four datasets including samples of early stage (I–II) ER-positive breast cancer patients who accepted surgery only, we validated that this signature was able to reclassify pHG2 patients into HG1 and HG3 groups with significantly different survival time. For the original pHG1 and pHG3 patients, the signature could also more accurately and objectively stratify them into distinct prognostic groups. And the up-regulated and down down-regulated genes in HG1 compared with HG3 involved in cell proliferation and extracellular signal transduction pathways respectively. By comparing with existing signatures, 10-GPS was with prognostic significance and was more aligned with survival of patients especially for pHG2 samples. Conclusions The transcriptional qualitative signature can provide an objective assessment of HG states of ER-positive breast cancer patients, especially for reclassifying patients with pHG2, to assist decision making on clinical therapy.

    Abstract: Clinical practice of dentistry entails the use of indirect vision using a dental mirror. The Mirrosistant is a device that helps dental students become proficient with use of indirect vision mirror operation. This study aimed to explore the role of the Mirrosistant on students’ performance with the virtual simulation dental training system. Materials and methods A total of 72 dental students were equally assigned to the Control group and the Experimental group. Subsequently, Mirrosistant was used to conduct a series of mirror training exercises in the Experimental group. The training consisted of tracing the edge and filling in the blank of the prescribed shape, as well as preparing the specified figure on raw eggs using indirect vision via Mirrosistant. Next, both groups were examined using the SIMODONT system, a virtual reality dental trainer, for mirror operation. In addition, a five-point Likert scale questionnaire was used to assess student feedback by using Mirrosistant. Results The mirror operation examination conducted by the SIMODONT system revealed that mirror training using Mirrosistant had statistically improved students’ performances (score: 80.42 ± 6.43 vs. 69.89 ± 15.98, P  = 0.0005) and shorten their performance time of mirror operation (time of seconds: 243.28 ± 132.83 vs. 328.53 ± 111.89, P  = 0.0013). Furthermore, the questionnaire survey indicated that the participants had positive attitudes toward the mirror training using Mirrosistant. Most students believed that the mirror training device could improve their perceptions of direction and distance, as well as their sensations of dental operation and dental fulcrum. Conclusion Mirror training using Mirrosistant can enhance dental students’ mirror perceptual and operational skills on virtual simulation dental training system.

    Abstract: Objectives. Recently, biallelic variants in MED27 have been identified to correlate with complex dystonia. However, no replicative study has been conducted in larger dystonia cohorts. In this study, we aimed to systematically evaluate the genetic associations of MED27 with dystonia in a large dystonia cohort. Materials and Methods. We analyzed rare variants (minor allele frequency 〈 0.01 ) of MED27 in a large Chinese dystonia cohort with whole exome sequencing. The overrepresentation of rare variants in patients was examined with Fisher’s exact test at allele and gene levels. Results. A total of 688 patients with dystonia were included in the study, including 483 isolated dystonia, 133 combined dystonia, and 72 complex dystonia. The average age at onset (SD) was 34.3 (19.1) years old. After applying filtering criteria, five rare variants, namely, p.R247H, p.P174A, p.P123A, p.L120F, and p.F56C, were identified in six individuals. All of them carried the variant in the heterozygous form, and no patients with compound heterozygous or homozygous alleles were identified. At allele level, no variant was associated with risk of dystonia. Gene-based burden analysis did not detect enrichment of rare variants of MED27 in dystonia either. Conclusion. Variants of MED27 were rare in Chinese dystonia patients, probably because that mutations in MED27 are more associated with more complex neurodevelopmental disorders that can also include dystonia among the various neurological features. Further studies are needed to confirm the role of MED27 in dystonia and other neurological disorders.
