Abstract: Technical efficiency (TE) is an important indicator to examine the performance of an enterprise. This paper applies the most popular stochastic frontier (SF) production functions to estimate the TE index for state-owned enterprises (SOEs) over the period 2010–2019. The results show that mean efficiency scores increased over the period 2010–2015, then decreased gradually in the period 2016–2019. Moreover, the analysis results by industry sectors also indicate that chemical manufacturing industry has the highest mean efficiency scores. Meanwhile, enterprises in the automotive and equipment manufacturing industries have the lowest technical efficiency, and the difference between these two sectors is up to 10%. The paper also makes some recommendations to policy makers to improve production efficiency in these firms.

Abstract: An increase in the international trade value of high-tech products is seen as an important demonstration of Vietnam’s transformation of the international trade structure from labour-intensive to technology-intensive. Focusing on the export aspect of international trade, this study analyzes the impact of national technological achievements on our country’s exports of high-tech goods. The Augmented gravity model was applied to the sample of Vietnam and 49 major trading partners in the period 2009-2018. The estimation results show that the export value of high-tech products in Vietnam is significantly impacted by the technological achievements of our country while not affected by the technological achievements of the partner countries.

Abstract: This study investigates the causality among export, foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and economic growth in Vietnam using quarterly time-series data from 2000Q1 to 2017Q4. The vector autoregression (VAR) model is employed to explore the relationship among variables in the long term as well as the short term. The results from the Johansen Cointegration test indicated that there was no long-term equilibrium nexus existing between them, so the VAR model would be qualified to apply for the study. Findings from the Granger causality test show that in the short term, there was a bilateral relationship between GDP and Exports, whereas GDP-FDI and Export-FDI are one-way relationships since both GDP and Exports were found by Granger to cause an increase in FDI in Vietnam but not vice versa. The findings of the causality relationship from GDP to exports and FDI and from exports to FDI in the short term imply that promotions in Vietnam’s economic growth will boost export activities as well as attract more inward FDI to the country. The results also indicate a current trend of Vietnam’s FDI being not really sustainable, as many FDI projects invested in Vietnam take advantage of abundant labor resources, low skills and cheap labor costs, as well as the origin of goods from Vietnam for export, as a result, not significantly contributing to the economic development.

Abstract: Mental health care for students in general, particularly anxiety, is a significant problem that needs more attention, especially during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of anxiety and examine the associated factors among students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam. A cross-sectional study was conducted from August to September 2021 among 5730 students. An online survey was used to collect sociodemographic information, and the generalized anxiety disorder questionnaire (GAD-7) was used to assess anxiety symptoms among Vietnamese students. Results showed that the prevalence of anxiety among study participants was 16.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 15.3%–17.2%). Factors related to anxiety among students were gender, type of housemate, COVID-19 exposure/infection status, vaccination status, health status, academic performance, and social relationships during the COVID-19 pandemic. A significant number of students experienced anxiety during COVID-19, and this rate was related to several factors. Psychological interventions are required to support students during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and other health crises. Further studies are required to confirm our findings.

Abstract: Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE) refers to a group of rare and severe neurodevelopmental disorders where genetic etiologies can play a major role. This study aimed to elucidate the genetic etiologies of a cohort of 53 Vietnamese patients with DEE. All patients were classified into known electroclinical syndromes where possible. Exome sequencing (ES) followed by a targeted analysis on 294 DEE‐related genes was then performed. Patients with identified causative variants were followed for 6 months to determine the impact of genetic testing on their treatment. The diagnostic yield was 38.0% (20/53), which was significantly higher in the earlier onset group ( 〈 12 months) than in the later onset group (≥12 months). The 19 identified variants belonged to 11 genes with various cellular functions. Genes encoding ion channels especially sodium voltage‐gated channel were the most frequently involved. Most variants were missense variants and located in key protein functional domains. Four variants were novel and four had been reported previously but in different phenotypes. Within 6 months of further follow‐up, treatment changes were applied for six patients based on the identified disease‐causing variants, with five patients showing a positive impact. This is the first study in Vietnam to analyze the genetics of DEE. This study confirms the strong involvement of genetic etiologies in DEE, especially early onset DEE. The study also contributes to clarify the genotype–phenotype correlations of DEE and highlights the efficacy of targeted ES in the diagnosis and treatment of DEE.

Abstract: Electrolyte films based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were prepared by using casting method with the addition 100 wt.% to 240 wt.% of dioctyl phthalate (DOP), propylene carbonate (PC) as plasticizers and Mg(ClO4)2 as an electrolytic salt. The Fourier infrared spectra (FTIR), tensile, electrical properties, surface morphology of electrolyte films were investigated. The FTIR spectra of plasticized PMMA/PVC blends indicated that there were secondary interactions between plasticizers and PMMA/PVC matrix. There were also molecular interactions between Mg(ClO4)2 and the blends, which indicated that Mg(ClO4)2 was well dissolved and solvated in the blends. Tensile results showed that Mg(ClO4)2 improved the elongation at break and the reduced tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the blends due to this salt can act as an internal lubricant for the blends. The SEM and EDX-mapping micrographs showed the wrinkled surface morphology of the electrolyte film, all raw materials were dispersed regularly into each others at molecular and ionic levels. For the electrolytes containing 10 wt.% of Mg(ClO4)2, the ionic conductivity increased with increasing plasticizer content and achieved in the range of 1.80 × 10-4 - 1.03 × 10-3 (S/cm). For the electrolyte containing 200 wt.% of the plasticizer, the ionic conductivity increased with increasing magnesium salt content and achieved in the range of 2.31 × 10-4 - 4.57 × 10-3 (S/cm).

Abstract: In this study, we attempted to apply a four‐arm star poly(methyl methacrylate) (4sPMMA) as a prepolymer of acrylic bone cement. The 4sPMMA with viscosity average molecular weight of about 45 kDa was synthesized via Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization method using Activators Regenerated by Electron Transfer (ARGET ATRP). In practical use, the fine powder of precipitated 4sPMMA was changed to rigid beads followed by making sheet and pulverizing. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (HNMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of 4sPMMA beads indicated the star structure of 4sPMMA with bromide end groups (C‐Br). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of 4sPMMA beads showed their random shapes with size in the range of 10‐100 μm, no traces of residual metal catalysts (Cu and Sn) were detected by Energy Dispersive X‐Ray (EDX) analysizer equipped with SEM instrument. Bone cement from 4sPMMA beads had been prepared manually and curing in rectangular and cylindrical molds. The setting characterization results showed that 4sPMMA bone cements exhibited lower maximum temperature (63.9 °C), lower setting temperature (45.6 °C), than those required in ISO 5833:2002. Other properties of 4sPMMA bone cement, such as bending strength, bending modulus and setting time met the requirements of above ISO standard.

Abstract: In this study, vinyltrimethoxysilane-treated hydroxyapatite (vHAP) and PMMA-grafted HAP (gHAP) were successfully prepared from original HAP (oHAP). Three kinds of HAP (oHAP, vHAP and g HAP) were used as additives for the preparation of three groups of HAP-modified PMMA bone cements (oHAP-BC, vHAP-BC and gHAP-BC). The setting, bending and compression properties of the bone cements were conducted according to ISO 5833:2002. The obtained results showed that the maximum temperature while curing the HAP-modified bone cements (HAP-BCs) decreased from 64.9 to 60.8 °C and the setting time increased from 8.1 to 14.0 min, respectively, with increasing HAP loading from 0 to 15 wt.%. The vHAP-BC and gHAP-BC groups exhibited higher mechanical properties than the required values in ISO 5833. Electron microscopy images showed that the vHAP and gHAP nanoparticles were dispersed better in the polymerized PMMA matrix than the oHAP nanoparticles. FTIR analysis indicated the polar interaction between the PO4 groups of the HAP nanoparticles and the ester groups of the polymerized PMMA matrix. Thermal gravimetric analysis indicated that mixtures of ZrO2/HAPs were not able to significantly improve the thermal stability of the HAP-BCs. DSC diagrams showed that the incorporation of gHAP to PMMA bone cement with loadings lower than 10 wt.% can increase Tg by about 2.4 °C.
