Abstract: We study a compensation mechanism design problem with customer‐choice behavior in a continuous review setting where the production and demand processes are stochastic. When a stockout occurs, the firm controls backorders on the basis of certain compensation policies. Customers make decisions to maximize their utility, which is decreasing in the price, the waiting time, and the customer's impatience factor. We assume that the impatience factor is private information held by the customer only. Two compensation mechanisms are designed to control backorders, namely uniform compensation and priority auction with an admission price. Under uniform compensation, the firm offers the same discount to all customers, whereas under auction compensation, priority is granted according to the customers' bid prices. We obtain the optimal stockout price and base stock level under each mechanism, and analyze the properties of the respective optimal policies. Assuming linear waiting costs with uniformly distributed impatience factor, we find that the auction mechanism (1) maintains a lower base stock level and results in greater profit and (2) benefits customers with relatively lower or higher impatience factors, but customers with a medium impatience factor may be rendered worse off. We further show that both compensation mechanisms are suitable for products with a high unit profit, a high lost sales penalty cost, and a high holding cost.

Abstract: This study uses the newly released Hang Seng Volatility Index (VHSI) data set to explore differences of the risk perception between the US and Hong Kong (HK) financial markets as well as the direct sentiment spillover effects across the regions. Results show no fear or exuberance in HK market while significant fear in the USA when the market closes losses two days in a row. Cross‐market evidence indicates the existence of fear in the HK market is completely imported from the USA. Direct implied volatility flows one way from USA to HK at first but shows reversal after the financial crisis.

Abstract: The low correlation of evaluation indices from the current user perception evaluation model and the neglect of the nonlinear relationship between diversified indices and user experience in different duration videos result in low user perception accuracy of long and short videos. To address these issues, we propose a user experience perception algorithm for long and short videos based on multiple nonlinear regression (LSMNR). First, to improve the efficiency and accuracy of modeling, the algorithm involves preprocessing of video data in edge servers and subdivides the videos based on their duration and popularity. Then, we introduce a new multidimensional quantitative evaluation index that fits the user’s subjective experience and further analyze the influence between multiple evaluation indices (video lag, black screen, etc.) and user quality of experience (QoE) for different video types. Moreover, the characteristics of the data in the multiple evaluation indices are extracted; user subjective evaluation experiments are designed using the video quality expert group (VQEG) standard; and sample and test databases were established. Finally, the optimal model parameters were trained by applying the nonlinear least square method and support vector machine (SVM) to fit and cross-verify the sample data. Our simulation results revealed that the Pearson correlation coefficient of the proposed LSMNR algorithm acquires a value of 0.9810. Compared with algorithms based on multinomial linear regression (MLR), linear SVM, and neural network (NN), the perceptual accuracy of the proposed algorithm is improved by at least 4.0%, and it is applicable to a wider range of video types.

Abstract: The piano, as the king of playing instruments, is the most popular instrument for people to learn to play. Learning to play the piano, on the other hand, necessitates professional instruction and a lot of practice. People do not have enough time for systematic training because of the fast pace of life. At the same time, a lack of professional piano teachers and high tuition fees discourage piano students. If the computer can recognize and evaluate the learner’s piano music in real time, the learner will be able to identify and correct errors in real time. There are currently some music recognition technologies, but the majority of them have the following flaws: first and foremost, the recognition accuracy is poor. Second, the identification process is slow and not real-time. Based on the existing problems, this paper proposes a mobile-based music recognition method. The main work of this paper is as follows: (1) a deep neural network (DNN) is applied to the recognition of piano playing music. The use of deep learning models improves the accuracy of music recognition. (2) In order to make the identification of music easier to use, a mobile application is developed in this paper. The app can be installed on mobile phones and tablets. It can input songs in real-time or offline, outputting misplayed notes and scoring the entire composition. In order to evaluate the effect of this study on music recognition, the experimental part uses multiple models for comparison. The experimental results show that the research in this paper is feasible and effective.

Abstract: Research and practical development of data-anonymization techniques have proliferated in recent years. Yet, limited attention has been paid to examine the potentially disparate impact of privacy protection on underprivileged subpopulations. This study is one of the first attempts to examine the extent to which data anonymization could mask the gross statistical disparities between subpopulations in the data. We first describe two common mechanisms of data anonymization and two prevalent types of statistical evidence for disparity. Then, we develop conceptual foundation and mathematical formalism demonstrating that the two data-anonymization mechanisms have distinctive impacts on the identifiability of disparity, which also varies based on its statistical operationalization. After validating our findings with empirical evidence, we discuss the business and policy implications, highlighting the need for firms and policy makers to balance between the protection of privacy and the recognition/rectification of disparate impact. Abstract: Studying a sample of Japanese firms, we examine whether foreign investors exert a significant influence on earnings management through manipulation of real activities. We find that foreign investors play an independent role in restraining real earnings management, as captured by abnormal cash flow from operations, abnormal discretionary expenses, abnormal production costs, or a composite of the aforementioned three measures. These results are robust to a variety of controls, including economic fundamentals, domestic blockholdings, governance mechanisms, and endogeneity of foreign ownership. Our findings indicate that sophisticated foreign investors, with relatively few business ties to local management, improve the accounting oversight of local firms by curbing earnings manipulation via operating activities. Collectively, our evidence suggests that one potential benefit of capital market globalization is less real earnings management in particular and higher earnings quality in general.
