Abstract:
Nondestructive testing (NDT) of grooved metal planes has been demonstrated
using a photoacoustic microscope (PAM). The obtained photoacoustic (PA) amplitude image and signal distribution across the groove are clearly different from those obtained for the
parallel line defects previously reported. The signal distribution profile shows thermal wave confinement at groove edges. The PA signal peaks at groove edges caused by thermal wave
confinement indicated the precise position of the vertical walls of the groove edges, which suggests the feasibility of the application of PAM to NDT of specimens with grooved defects.
