    Abstract: In an underwater acoustic direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) system, the performance of the conventional receiver is severely limited by the strong multiple-access interferences, which is due to the near-far effect. In this paper, a time-frequency-time with eigendecomposition-based blind beamformer (TFT-EBB) method is proposed for a distant user to suppress strong interference from a nearby user in DS-CDMA underwater acoustic communications. When the interference level is moderately higher than that of the desired signal, the TFT-EBB method can estimate the composite steering vector of all multipath components of the weak desired user signal via the eigendecomposition of the array covariance matrix at each frequency bin. Then the proposed energy detection-based RAKE receiver is cascaded to achieve multipath diversity, in which it requires less prior information compared with the conventional RAKE receiver. The proposed method is evaluated by using both simulated and field experimental data, which verifies its effectiveness.

    Abstract: This paper reports on an ultrasonic levitation system developed for crystallization from solution in a containerless condition. The system has been proven to be able to levitate droplets stably and grow crystals rapidly and freely from a levitated droplet. Crystals of four samples, including NaCl, NH4Cl, lysozyme, and proteinase K, were obtained successfully utilizing the system. The studies showed that the crystals obtained from the acoustically levitated droplets all exhibited higher growth rates, larger sizes, better shapes, fewer crystals, as well as fewer twins and shards, compared with the control on a vessel wall. The results indicated that containerless ultrasonic levitation could play a key role in improving the crystallization of both inorganic salts and proteins. The ultrasonic levitation system could be used as a ground-based microgravity simulation platform, which could swiftly perform crystallization and screening of crystallization conditions for space crystallization and other ground-based containerless techniques. Moreover, the approach could also be conveniently applied to researching the dynamics and mechanism of crystallization. In addition, the device could be used for the preparation of high-purity materials, analysis of minute or poisonous samples, study of living cells, environmental monitoring, and so on.

    Abstract: It is known that the eigenfrequencies of a rolling tire depend on the velocity of rotation. We distinguish two causes for the stiffness increase: the frequency dependence of the complex modulus of the materials and the geometrical stiffness. The real part of the Young's modulus is monotonic according to the frequency. It contributes for an important part to the stiffening. The geometrical stiffness also increases with the rotational velocity. A consequence of these effects is the modification of the size of the contact area for different velocities of a rolling tire. Here we first present experimental results estimating the size of the contact area for a tire in statics and for different rolling velocities. Differences of 20% can be observed. Then the viscoelastic behaviours of the tire materials are presented and experimental results showing the frequency dependence of the complex modulus of the tire constitutive materials are given. Then finite element computations are presented with a real distribution of materials in the tire section and the size of the contact area is estimated and compared to experimental measurements. These results could improve the modelling of tire road interaction for tire noise predictions.
