    Abstract: At present, the fundamental frequencies of signals of most commercially available acoustic alarms to deter small cetaceans are below 20 kHz, but it is not well ascertained whether higher frequencies have a deterrent effect on bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Two captive bottlenose dolphins housed in a floating pen were subjected to a continuous pure tone at 50 kHz with a source level of 160 ± 2 dB (re 1 μPa, rms). The behavioral responses of dolphins were judged by comparing surfacing distance relative to the sound source, number of surfacings, and number of echolocation clicks produced, during forty 15 min baseline periods with forty 15 min test periods (four sessions per day, 40 sessions in total). On all 10 study days, surfacing distance and the number of surfacings increased while click production decreased during broadcasts of test sound. The avoidance threshold sound pressure level for a continuous 50 kHz tone for the bottlenose dolphins, in the context of this study, was estimated to be 144 ± 2 dB (re 1 μPa, rms). The results indicated that a continuous 50 kHz tonal signal can deter bottlenose dolphins from an area.

    Abstract: The T-matrix formalism and an ultrasonic experiment are developed to study the scattering of in-plane waves for an alluvial valley embedded in a two-dimensional half-space. The solution of the in-plane scattering problem can be determined by the T-matrix method, where the basis functions are defined by the singular solutions of Lamb’s problems with surface loading in both horizontal and vertical directions. In the experiment, a thin steel plate with a semicircular aluminum plate attached on the edge is used to simulate the two-dimensional alluvial valley in the state of plane stress. Based on the spectra of displacement signals measured at the free edge of the scatterer, the resonance frequencies where the peaks appear can be identified. It can be shown that the nondimensional resonance frequency is one of the characteristic properties of the scattering system. Furthermore, it is noted that the nondimensional resonance frequencies measured experimentally are in good agreement with those calculated theoretically.

    Abstract: To meet the challenges of internationalization, universities around the globe have implemented a variety of strategies, including study abroad, academic exchange, and cross-border collaboration. For any of these strategies, it was perhaps inevitable that English would become a crucial means of communication for both native and non-native speakers. The current study investigates the relationship between domestic college students’ perceptions of English varieties (PEV), L2 motivation, and willingness to communicate (WTC) in the internationalization at home (IaH) context. A model linking PEV, L2 motivation, and WTC was proposed. A total of 273 college students at a university in Taiwan responded to a questionnaire consisting of 16 items in four major categories. The results indicate that in the IaH context college students’ PEV significantly affects L2 motivation and only when learners are intrinsically motivated are they willing to communicate interculturally using English. The results suggest that promoting an appreciation for English varieties in the college context strengthens students’ intrinsic motivation to learn English, which may promote the students’ willingness to use English for communication.

    Abstract: Ultrasonic phased array imaging using full-matrix capture (FMC) has raised great interest among various communities, including the nondestructive testing community, as it makes full use of the echo space to provide preferable visualization performance of inhomogeneities. The conventional way of FMC data postprocessing for imaging is through beamforming approaches, such as delay-and-sum, which suffers from limited imaging resolution and contrast-to-noise ratio. To tackle these difficulties, we propose a deep learning (DL)-based image forming approach, termed FMC-Net, to reconstruct high-quality ultrasonic images directly from FMC data. Benefitting from the remarkable capability of DL to approximate nonlinear mapping, the developed FMC-Net automatically models the underlying nonlinear wave-matter interactions; thus, it is trained end-to-end to link the FMC data to the spatial distribution of the acoustic scattering coefficient of the inspected object. Specifically, the FMC-Net is an encoder-decoder architecture composed of multiscale residual modules that make local perception at different scales for the transmitter-receiver pair combinations in the FMC data. We numerically and experimentally compared the DL imaging results to the total focusing method and wavenumber algorithm and demonstrated that the proposed FMC-Net remarkably outperforms conventional methods in terms of exceeding resolution limit and visualizing subwavelength defects. It is expected that the proposed DL approach can benefit a variety of ultrasonic array imaging applications.
