    Abstract: To reduce errors in species recognition and the probability of interbreeding that lowers fitness, individuals within sympatric zones shift the signals to differentiate from those of other species. In the present study, the differences of the acoustic features of ultrasounds (courtship calls during heterosexual encounters) and audible calls (distress calls during tail-clamp stress) are compared among three sympatric Rattus species (Rattus andamanensis, R. norvegicus, and R. losea). Results showed that the three species have significantly different call parameters, including call duration, peak frequency, bandwidth, pitch, goodness of pitch, frequency modulation, and Wiener entropy. This study provides quantitative evidence for character displacement in the acoustic signals of closely related sympatric Rattus species. Results indicate that the divergence of acoustic signal has arrived at the quite meticulous degree of evolution. Therefore, the acoustic signal trait is likely involved in the evolution of species diversity in rodents.

    Abstract: 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Introduction: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Although melodic intonation therapy (MIT) has proven effective in individuals with non-fluent aphasia in a variety of western languages, its application to Mandarin-speaking aphasic patients has not been thoroughly studied. The adaptation is complicated because Mandarin Chinese is a tone language with specific prosodic elements that differ from Indo-European languages. This study developed a Chinese-specific variant of MIT, i.e., tone-rhythmic therapy (TRT), and tested its efficacy in individuals with non-fluent aphasia. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Methods: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 Six non-fluent aphasic patients were recruited; all of them were admitted to the study over 6 months after stroke and had received a standard program of language therapy. In the current research, tone and rhythmic practice were incorporated into the training procedures, and the adaptation was then examined in patients. The TRT treatment lasted 6 weeks, with five 50-min sessions per week. The Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) and the Functional Assessment of Communication Skills for Adults (FACS) tests were used to measure the change in the speech and language skills of patients. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Results: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 The results showed that the patients had increased BDAE and FACS scores after intervention, and the treatment effect lasted for 6 months. 〈 b 〉 〈 i 〉 Discussion: 〈 /i 〉 〈 /b 〉 The modified MIT proved effective for Mandarin-speaking patients with non-fluent aphasia with lasting effects. Further studies evaluating its efficacy are needed for other types of aphasia and other tone languages.

    Abstract: This paper introduces a numerical method of reconstructing three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound fields from their two-dimensional back-projections to understand the intensity distribution of nonplanar waves. The horizontal planes for line-focused ultrasound fields were roughly elliptical, whereas those for point-focused ultrasound fields were nearly circular. Experimental and simulated results indicated that the ultrasound intensity at the central axis can be calibrated from the light intensity by 3D reconstruction of the ultrasound field. The difference between the measured ultrasound intensity for nonplanar waves in schlieren imaging and the simulation results were discussed. From this work, the 3D ultrasound field becomes possible to be reconstructed.

    Abstract: Mandarin is a tonal language, and it is important to preserve lexical tone information in synthesized speech. With natural speech, Chinese cochlear implant (CI) users have difficulty perceiving voice pitch cues important for lexical tone perception; it is unclear whether this difficulty persists in Mandarin synthesized speech. In this study, intelligibility of naturally produced and synthesized Mandarin speech was measured in Chinese CI listeners; intelligibility was also measured in a control group of normal-hearing (NH) listeners. Five synthesized voices were selected to represent different talker genders (male, female, child), speaking rates (normal, slow), and speaking styles (emotional, accent). The data showed that while modern Mandarin text-to-speech (TTS) systems can provide perfect speech intelligibility for NH listeners, overall intelligibility was much poorer for CI than for NH listeners. CI performance was significantly poorer with synthesized speech than with natural speech (p  & lt; 0.001). CI listeners were highly sensitive to the “extra-atypical” synthesized emotional and accented speech. Performance with each of the synthesized speech types was significantly correlated with performance with natural speech in CI users (p  & lt; 0.01 in all cases). While modern TTS systems offer educational and communication benefits to CI users and hearing-impaired individuals, the selection of synthesized voices should be carefully considered in education applications of TTS for hearing-impaired individuals, especially CI children, since poor intelligibility performance may affect language learning.

    Abstract: Non-Hermitian parity-time (PT) symmetric systems that possess real eigenvalues have been intensively investigated in quantum mechanics and rapidly extended to optics and acoustics demonstrating a lot of unconventional wave phenomena. Here, a PT symmetric metamaterial beam is designed based on shunted piezoelectric patches and asymmetric wave scattering in the form of flexural waves is demonstrated through analytical and numerical approaches. The gain and loss components in the PT symmetric beam are realized by the introduction of negative and positive resistances into the external shunting circuits, respectively. Effective medium theory and transfer matrix method are employed to determine the effective material parameters and scattering properties of the PT symmetric metamaterial beam. Unidirectional reflectionlessness has been demonstrated analytically and numerically, together with illustrations of the PT phase transition and exceptional points. The tunability of exceptional points is studied by changing the spacing between piezoelectric patches and shunting circuit parameters. The design explores complex material parameters of the beam structure, and could open unique ways to asymmetric wave control, enhanced sensing, amplification, and localization of flexural waves.

    Abstract: Extended experience with meaningful pitch information has been shown to benefit music perception as well as speech perception where pitch cues are important, such as segregation of competing speech and tonal language perception. Interestingly, pitch perception has been shown to be similar between non-musicians who speak a tonal language and musicians who speak a non-tonal language, both of which outperform non-musicians who speak a non-tonal language. However, it is unknown whether extensive music training can further benefit pitch perception in tonal language speakers. In this study, melodic contour identification, spectro-temporal pattern perception, and masked speech recognition was measured in 16 adult normal-hearing musicians and 16 non-musicians; all were Chinese native speakers of Mandarin. Melodic contour identification, spectro-temporal pattern perception, and masked speech recognition all were significantly better for musicians than for non-musicians. Compared to non-musicians, musicians better utilized talker sex cues to segregate competing speech; utilization of talker sex cues by musicians was associated with the onset and extent of music training. Across all participants, spectro-temporal pattern perception was associated with better masked speech understanding. The data suggest that early and extensive music training may further benefit tonal language speakers’ perception and utilization of pitch cues.

    Abstract: Pitch, timbre, and/or timing cues may be used to stream and segregate competing musical melodies and instruments. In this study, melodic contour identification was measured in cochlear implant (CI) and normal-hearing (NH) listeners, with and without a competing masker; timing, pitch, and timbre cues were varied between the masker and target contour. NH performance was near-perfect across different conditions. CI performance was significantly poorer than that of NH listeners. While some CI subjects were able to use or combine timing, pitch and/or timbre cues, most were not, reflecting poor segregation due to poor spectral resolution.
